  • The 2023 BYD Atto 3 has quickly become a common sight on Australian roads, with buyers flocking to the new mid-size SUV, partly on the basis of its relatively affordable pricing for an electric car. But is there more to this EV than just its 'cheap' upfront cost?
Well, family buyers will be hoping for more than just that. After all, in this segment, they expect genuine practicality and safety credentials, too. And on paper, the Atto 3 delivers them. But how do they translate in reality?
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Emily Agar and her family of three spend a week with the MG ZS EV rival's Extended Range flagship to see if it has what it takes to properly tackle day-to-day life.

Thanks to our viewers who rightly pointed out that the low-speed whirring sound mentioned at 6:50 is actually the pedestrian warning system. It's a noisy one!

    • @asum307
      @asum307 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

No, it's incredibly noisy compared to others. Even with the music on low, the sound overcomes whatever is playing through the crappiest speakers fitted to a vehicle.

@@asum307 You must have missed something somewhere. Perhaps yours has a dud speaker, suggest you get it fixed under warranty.
The audio system in my Atto3 is far superior to that in my last of the line model VF Holden which when I bought it had what I thought to be (at the time) a pretty good sound system.

    • @asum307
      @asum307 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@jimgraham6722 The system lacks bass, and clarity. The audio head unit, and lack of an amplifier fails to provide the speakers with the required power to turn it up. Put on anything with any sort of base and turn it up to 3/4, you'll see it switch from side to side of the car as the power draw is too much.
I had numerous VFS from the standard SV6, up to the series 2 SSV Redline with the Bose sound system, none of them were anywhere near as bad as this.
As a fact, our 2017 Toyota Camry rental with a stock 6 speaker was better.
The fact the BYD doesn't even have speakers in front of the driver speakers volumes, that's where you want sound to come from, not just behind you.
Many of our vehicles have had very high end sound systems, even some using Kevlar and diamonds, that cost more than 10 - 15% of the cost of this BYD, on the road.
I didn't expect anything great from it, but it's not got any positives for the Audio.
Thankfully this car is a filler car until our actual one can be delivered, hopefully only another week or so. Wouldn't recommend.

My grandkids love the Atto 3 interior, like a disco - very cool grandpa.
The whirring sound between 1kmh and 28kmh is the pedestrian warning system, designed to alert pedestrians. It is an extremely good idea. I am sure over the fullness of time it will save many many lives.
Most of the comments here about highway driving are nonsense. I regularly drive mine between Sydney and Canberra, and Canberra and the coast. It performs very well on the highway (including Clyde Mountain) with absolutely no problem at all. However at highway speeds it gets about 10% less range than a comparable specced Tesla Model 3. In my view this difference is mainly down to aerodynamics, the Model3 is much lower to the road and has a very slippery design.

BYD has the safest battery technology in the world. They invented Blade Battery which has been stabbed, overcharged by almost 300%, put under extreme heat and still didn't explode or burst into flames. Looks like they didn't have any expert reviewers around so they had to call her in to fill the spot at the last minute.
She didn't even know about the low speed "whirring" sound from the engine which is a safety feature that is suppose to alert pedestrians and more importantly, animals such as family cats that would be sleeping near the cars. Someone needs to do a proper review of the car.

This is a poor quality review (see the written version or better yet don't), basing the quality of a cars stereo on phone conversations, critiquing the low speed whirring sound, not balancing out range discussions based on city/country driving; all EV's have reduced range on the highway, especially one of an SUV design so not a feature of this EV but all EV's.
Advising that the car is slow compared to other EV's; 0-100kmh in 7.3 seconds would be normal or better than many single motor variants from other manufacturers. Finally the comment of the car being unstable at 110kmh due to strong winds, is just bizarre.

Sorry must totally disagree with your vehicle city suitability only claim, not sure what your agenda is but personally I’ve done over 12000 km in my vehicle since new.
It’s easily managed the Bruce goat track / highway from Cairns to Brisbane a couple of times, spent time on gravel and rural dirt roads.
The drivers lane keeping assist and active cruise systems brilliant on a long haul and the quiet cabin and reduction of road noise significantly reduces driving fatigue on a big trip.
Cars got a great sound system.it’s done trailer towing, easily conquered torrential tropical downpours and is easily the quietest, smoothest and most comfortable long distance highway driving vehicle I’ve ever owned, plus still not a rattle or a squeak to be found.
Still running standard tyres so far no issues, I’ve found my car will consistently do 320 km to 350 km per charge highway cycle however I usually stop around 250 km for a quick charge 25 to 30 mins a coffee and a pee. My vehicle consumes 15 to 17 KWH per 100km all weather, wind rain and cruising at posted limits so it’s more than fine for out and about the city I can assure you.
Best of all even when paying for DC fast charging on long road trips “fuel” costs me just under $ 30 dollars per 1000 km traveled. One charge top up a week for free off the roof easily covers city commuting it’s possible to get 420 km per charge @ average 13 kWh per 100 km.
Roof racks, tow bar and space saver spare wheel all available too if you care to do your research.

An inadequate level of basic EV knowledge from this presenter which is a real shame. The pedestrian warning system is required to keep everyone safe. I have never had range anxiety driving my Atto 3, it is actually quite efficient and gets 420km (which is it’s WLTP range) around town and 300-350km on the highway from a full battery. I love taking it on the open road and have done plenty of road trips without any issues. If your presenters don’t understand EVs and have range anxiety whenever they step in one, then of course they are going to trash their open road ability.

6.5 rating for a car that outsold Model 3 last month is rather odd.
The comment about open road driving is interesting. People at "Chasing Cars" tested a bunch of small SUVs and rated ATTO 3 second best overall and first in terms of drive quality.
And since when did 7.3 secs to 60 stopped being zippy?
Worth noting that Android Auto is wireless, screen brightness can be adjusted so no problem with viewing, motor noise is infact pedestrian warning sound, BYD themselves advertise 420 km WLTP range for the car.
Unfortunately BYD has copied not so good decisions from Tesla e.g. screen temperature controls, fixed headrests and seat material as pointed.
The review seems rushed which is surprising given the car has been around in the country for a while.

EV cars are looked at always the wrong ways. No one that does any analysis of them seems to want or bothers to learn the effects of battery bleed out. A gas engine for all their drawbacks they don't use energy when parked. If you car uses energy to "charge" then you don't drive the car and yet the energy used to charge it is lost how is that efficient. A gas engine is vastly more efficient when parked and shut off. It doesn't die just from sitting there without a power supply connected to it all the time.

How do you get to this theory? My car can sit for a few days over a weekend if I choose not to go anywhere and it has the same range figure when I get back in. If the car has extra features like app access & pre conditioning then this is a given, also petrol cars have the same features that access power from a 12v battery too, the Difference being that an ev can top it’s 12v up in these situations where an OCE vehicle can’t just top up its 12v whilst sitting.

Strange claim my EV uses no more power when switched off than my ICE car so I don't know where you get that from.
All modern cars have phantom drain associated with anti theft and keyless entry. In ICE cars without charging, this will flatten the battery after a few months. EVs have much larger batteries so can be left many months if not years.

    • @YouTubeCensorsEverything

I know how dare I inform people of the reality that all batteries suffer power loss regards of wether you use them. An EV loses on average 1% a day regardless of wether or not you drive it. It also requires vastly more copper products, cobalt, products, and lithium all of which are quite equivalent to fossil fuels on the toxic dangers they pose. Not only that they do it faster. Lithium technology isn't new. It wasn't new when EVs were first built. It also isn't now.
Lithium uses 500,000 gallons of water per ton- fresh water- which is polluted in the process. How far do you think 1 ton of Lithium goes? Do you think it's forever ♻️? How much fresh water do you think is on earth? I bet you don't know the answer to any of these questions without looking them up and I bet you didn't bother to learn those things before purchasing an EV.
Poisoning and/or draining water supplies isn't a positive alternative to fossil fuels. It's just an additional way to destroy the environment. If that's not enough to pop your smug bubble there's also the fact that EV have lower industry standards, less regulation, and virtually no long term understanding. No thx.
