    Edward Yang is probably my favourite director, it's a real shame he isn't better released outside of Asia.

      Yes, unfortunately, I think his films Mahjong and A Confucian Confusion are not widely available. I have Japanese DVDs of these films and so I consider myself very fortunate, especially now because even these Japanese DVDs are currently out of print.

    Despite it’s nearly four hour length, I’ve watched this film numerous times, the first time when I was deployed to the Middle East. It benefits that you don’t truly know what it’s about until the very end. If your heart doesn’t drop the moment it happens, you are not human. It transcends all languages and cultural barriers to be the most indicative representation of the human condition ever put to film.

    • @DaisukeBeppu

      Hello and wonderful comment. This makes me very happy to know that this film is being discovered and explored! Thank you so much for this comment. I agree with you completely. It does indeed speak to something universal about the human condition.

    This film hit home for me because it allowed me to understand the environment my mother grew up in. She was 15 years old in 1961 when the film ends so I watched it thinking she could have associated with some of these characters in the film. She grew up in Daan district which may not have been as rough as Zhong Zheng district where the film takes place. I will always think of this film when I visit Guling street in that district.

    This film is both mundane and huge in scope at the same time. The events are mostly mundane, but the scope can be seen through the range of emotions that the characters and we the viewers go through. I absolutely love the way Yang shoots his films, the cinematography is flawless, I like that he doesn't move the camera that much, lots of still shots, and when the camera moves, it moves with the characters. Of course the sights in Taiwan look beautiful, which also makes the cinematography stand out more. A Brighter Summer Day is an amazing film, and I totally understand why it is one of your favorites, I personally prefer Yi Yi, but I love both, and lastly, I can't wait to watch Yang's other films like Taipei Story. The next time I'll watch both this and Yi Yi, I'll watch them with the commentaries.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for these great insights you make on the film, and on Yang's film-making style overall. Yes, you are absolutely right, and his camera work is sublime.

    Greetings from India to Daisuke. This movie's restoration by Criterion is as good as the film itself.
    The film tells the story of ill minded Chinese government aims (which actually is not gone even today unfortunately, for example India-China and US-China problems these days)due to which people migrated and in a way or two their (and their children's) fate took a hugh turn because they left their well settled homes and their hard earned jobs and certificates.
    Taiwanese people's lives are so clearly depicted in this film that even i (who live in India and have no experience of South East Asian culture and living on ground level) can easily travel to those times and space.
    The film is able to reach that feat is only because it uses TIME as it's key ingredient...which is 3:57 hours...i mean any conscious film viewer literally can have an out of body experience on watching this film.
    I have seen this movie only once but even right now i can say with 100 percent confidence that i will like this film much much more on 2nd viewing.
    Thanks again to Daisuke for making more and more cinephiles informed about this film.

    I recently set aside time to watch this film after having heard about it for many many years, and I was disappointed. I thought it was a fine movie and there were things about it that I liked very much, but it did not live up to my expectations based on all the praise I'd heard for it. I've seen several of Edward Yang's films, and I enjoyed all of the others more than this one. • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much for your comment! So, yes, I do touch briefly on the commentary by Tony Rayns and this film, in this video. So, I think that the Rayns commentary adds so many stories about the production (especially since Rayns knew Yang and they were corresponding, and in fact Rayns paid visits to the set during the shooting of the film, etc.), and Rayns is an expert in Asian cinema and he shows his expertise with this film, because there are some crucial insights that he makes (in particular and for example, the parallel structure between the story of the father and the story of the son (Xiao S'ir)). So, this is very helpful to me. of course, I do know and acknowledge that commentaries can be a bit hit and miss, but I think this Criterion commentary track is excellent. I hope that helps, and thank you again for your comment!

    Daisuke, How often do you revisit films, such as "A Brighter Summer Day?" Do you go by emotion, olfactory memory jog or time of year? I realize you revisit to discuss and anylize film but I was curious if other factors played into it as well. I tend to revisit films such as "Departures" and "Tokyo GodFathers" around Christmas time. As well as revisiting others when remembering happy times watching films with family or friends. Such as watching "Captain Nemo and the Underwater City" with my Uncle at the long gone but always remembered Gilmore Drive-in Theater, near third and fairfax, across from the Farmers Market in LA. Now populated by the many shops and restaurants of "The Grove". Just a thought. All the Best, Signed Rich in Atlanta.

    • @DaisukeBeppu
      @DaisukeBeppu  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dear heartfilmfire, thank you so much for your comment and for your great question. This is a hard question to answer, simply because I don't know if there is any kind of planned thing that goes into my choice. But I think it is more based on intuition and my mood more than anything else. And usually I don't usually watch films based on, say, the holiday season or anything like that, but once in a while I will get into the mood to watch more horror films during the Halloween season, but not always. I suppose that perhaps I have a strong sense during the new year that I will want to watch something "significant", but this word to me usually is based more on a subjective feeling rather than on any objective data. So all in all it really depends on my mood at the time.
      But I really admire and respect those who watch certain films at certain times of the year. I think this is a great approach!
