I also cant forget how Ming almost killed Xiao Sir with the loaded gun. That scene was really something. And the way Ma slapped her, dang

Oh yes... that is a very powerful scene and it comes out of nowhere and suddenly a sudden rush of tension fills the air.
And it is interesting too because it does have a kind of link with a scene that occurred earlier in the film.

@@DaisukeBeppu yes, powerful! Thats the word. But sadly, i cant tell what the linked scene you're referring to. I guess its time for another rewatching.
P.S. thank you so much for your reviews. I have no one to talk to about this beautiful film. And your insights mean a lot to us

Was this S'ir witnessing Uncle Fat relaying the gossip he has heard of about the eldest daughter, to his Father?

When Ma slapped her, that was the beginning of their relationship which we didn’t get to see but heard about only.

I suspect the girl Xiao Sir saw with his flashlight at the beginning of the film wasn't actually Ming. The guy in the scene didn't appear to be Sly either. Ming has shorter hair than the girl we see briefly in that scene. She keeps that hairstyle the entire film.
The people they flashed seemed older than the age of the main characters. That's why the guy says "You kids...". The girl he is with also clearly has long hair and is not Ming.
If Yang wanted it to be Ming and Sly, he would have used those actors given his attention to detail.
My interpretation is that Jade said it was actually Ming just to upset Xiao Sir at the end of the film. I know the film suggests that it was Ming with Sly but we never really get confirmation of that. Ming never confirmed that that was her and she probably wouldn't want to.

Wow!!! I am so happy to hear that!! Yes, I love the word "sensible". What an interesting way to describe it. So many possibilities. Well done and thank you for giving me something more to think about regarding this great film. I never thought of it that way but to read your comment, yes I can see that.

I took your advice and managed to find 4 free hours so I could watch the film through in one go and wow, all I can say really, wow. A completely overwhelming experience in the best possible sense. The final stages of the movie rocked me to my core, totally rattled me. The amount of love Yang has and expresses for each of his characters is so touching. Si’r has to be one of the great characters in cinematic history. So very simple, but his depth is endless (it reminds me of Chekhov’s work in a lot of ways).
I have to say thank you, Daisuke, for introducing me to this masterwork. For me, it’s a before and after type of film, it has changed me in many ways, and it introduced me to perhaps on of my new favorite films, filmmaker and film movement with ‘New Taiwanese Cinema’. So layered, so rewarding, so moving, the list goes on! Thank you so very much my friend. I hope you and your family are well! 😊

Hello Henry, and wow, thank you!! Thank you thank you thank you for sharing this reaction with me.
Yes, as you may know, I too love this work for a number of reasons, and it always makes me very happy to hear that more people are discovering it.
Yes, the way that Yang respects his characters is amazing, and Xiao Sir is one of the great characters and his trajectory over the course of the film... it is truly emotional.
      Cheers my dear friend.

After watching the film I came to youtube immediately in search for answers to my (many) doubts about the film and luckily I found them!
Thanks for taking your time to explain how you perceive this movie and their characters. You helped me a lot to understand the relationship between Ming an Xiao and also the tragic final.

Hello and I am so honored that you would visit this video. Thank you so much for that.
It is such a beautiful and richly complex work. My comments in my video are not very strong at all, but at the same time I too continue to rewatch this work and discover new things and am reminded of the many other things I do not know.
In any case, thank you so much again and warmest regards.

I watched this movie the first time on the 02.01.2021 and the second time on 03.01.2021 the first time i watched it it was overwhelming and a little bit frustrating at times, im from germany and watching film with english subtitles is not easy for me and with the many characters in this movie and the complex story it was kind of frustrating and for me when i dont understand whats going on i get bored at times but after i fninished the movie i could not stop thinking about this masterpiece. So I decided to watch it the next day again (I have NEVER watche movies 2 times in 2 days). The second time was way better i watched videos (your great video too) and read articels about this movie so i understood way more the second time but
I still haven't understood everything and i still have to think every day how great this movie is. Because of your recommendation I am going to watch the film again with commentery in the next months after this i will watch it again with my grandfather, I have shown him in the mood for love and Parasite and he loves Asian cinema. I hope I will appreciate this movie even more the 3rd time. Dear Kim, wow, thank you so much for this. Yes, I totally understand how the first viewing can be a bit overwhelming and it can be hard to understand who is who, etc. However, yes, as you also suggest, watching this film again really helps and enhances the experience. I totally agree. I think it was like that for me also. And yes, if you can, the commentary track is great. I am so happy that you reacted to the film in the way that you did, my friend. That is wonderful, and in particular too because the works of Edward Yang happen to be among my personal favorites.

I just watched this film last night on the criterion Blu ray , it was my 4th Yang film and I’ll be catching up on the rest over the next couple of weeks. This film was absolutely astounding, one of the best films I’ve ever seen! It’s rare that I do this but I was gasping throughout in shock and just having any shock reactions throughout, I felt physically different afterwards, a masterpiece!

Just watched a little bit of the video and I must say, it sounds very interesting. I defiantly think I’d enjoy Edward Yang’s films. I might get this film first, since I’m really into the Criterion Collection, and then check out some of the other films you’ve recommended in this Edward Yang series.
