    We need this in California. People here think "I was here first" and "If you want to go faster, GO AROUND!" Meanwhile there is no way to go around. I've spoken to drivers like this while chatting with classmates, etc, and the topic of traffic comes up. I still remember someone angry "Why don't those people go around?!" Because they CAN'T!!! lol Good grief.
    Years ago, there was a PSA about road rage demonstrated in a grocery store. A person leisurely shopping and an angry man "tailgating" the shopper with his own cart. Every time the front shopper moved, the vessel bursting guy stayed hot on their trail. The announcer asked (paraphrased) "You wouldn't shop like this. So why drive like this?" The number of people with such poor critical thinking skills... No one shops like that because it's a store, you can go around, there are no cart laws preventing you from shopping in "oncoming cart traffic".

      I can agree with that. The way I was taught is that if you aren't actively passing someone, you should move to the right. When I say actively, it means that you are going to pass them in one or two miles, not fifteen. If you are slower traffic, you should be to the right (note, if there's no one ahead of you for more then a quater mile, you are, by default, the slower traffic, so move to the right hand lane.)

    This (no camping in left lane) was in the state study guide for new drivers way back in the 1970s in Indiana. And it was on the written test. I think South Dakota is the only state without some law prohibiting left lane camping. I know a few states make exceptions for when there are three or more lanes in same direction, and I think Ohio allows you to stay in left lane if you're traveling speed limit, and same in Ontario. I think that's dangerous - all left lane travel should be for overtaking regardless of speed, in preparation for turning left, or to utilise all available lanes in heavy traffic/construction zones.
    My other pet peeve involves the idiots who can't comprehend the "zipper method" of using all lanes all the way to their end and, at that point, merge every other vehicle. It's faster and safer for everyone yet there's always somebody who thinks it's there job to block a lane so nobody passes. A pickup was doing exactly this on I-94 between Chicago and Detroit in Michigan when a blue state trooper lit him up and used loudspeaker to threaten a hefty fine if he didn't stop blocking traffic.

    I hear ya. !! I have one 'occasional' exception: In some areas of Ok and AZ the right lane is in very poor quality. I pulled a trailer through these places and stayed mostly in the right lane because of my reduced speed. When it was clear of traffic, i would shift to the left lane to get a little peace of mind. Some of the right lane stretches, especially in Arizona, were like driving on everlasting cattle guards. Not a fan of beating my car and trailer to pieces.

  • @DaneRates

    The driver could have a left turn to make, if the maxed speed limit is 55,65 or 70mph there's a 3 to 5mph lower cousin speed that the driver is aloud to travel before switching to the far right lane. Which would be held legal and reasonable in all 50 states. Also those speeds are for both lanes,which indicates you people speeding.
    Anyway if you time one driver traveling 70mph and another traveling at 60mph to the same destination there's than 40 seconds arrival time difference.
    Resulting in the question being asked to any of these drivers what's the Rush? Regardless of the driving conditions the goal is to arrive safely.

      Speeding is a fact of life, there will always be people that speed. If the speed limit is 70 and you are going 72 in the left lane, and someone behind you is going 75, you are making the road less safe by not moving over to the right and letting them pass.

    • @jasonrekker4328

      @DaneRates that's why it's not illegal to "be" in the left lane, only to "stay" in the left lane when you have no lawful purpose for doing so.
      The validity of one law is not eliminated when the other laws are not followed. The laws around use of left lanes do not become irrelevant once people exceed the speed limit. The laws clearly make a provision for some measure of speeding, as they are tied to "normal and reasonable flow of traffic" and not to the speed limit. Not tying this law to the speed limit is not an oversight; it is very clearly intentional in the legislation

I don't like getting stuck behind someone going slow on the left anymore then anyone else does but I am far more concerned with people not signaling, not stopping at stop signs (slow and go as I call it), not paying attention to the road hitting animals, pedestrians and cyclists.

      Use some common courtesy. Pretend you're in a stairwell or in a narrow corridor and people come up behind you. What would you do?
      Be decisive one way or another. If you can't pass a vehicle in about 15-20 seconds, then pull in behind it and wait for faster traffic to pass you, then continue your passing maneuver when you can take the time you need to do so.

    • @jbm71
      @jbm71 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Generally speaking, there is no time limit specified in the traffic laws for how quickly you must finish your passing. If you’re behind someone not passing as quickly as you’d like, you are required by law to keep a full legal, safe following distance and patiently wait your turn. I understand Alabama does have a requirement that the pass must be completed in 1.5 miles.

    • @jasonrekker4328
      @jasonrekker4328 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jbm71 I often flash my lights to notify my intent. I don't ride up their behind. I keep a safe distance. I think signaling intent is helpful in order to let others know you are waiting. Many times I have moved over into a small gap only for the vehicle behind me not to make a move and they sit in the same spot. I would prefer if they indicate whether they are wanting to pass, or just happy sitting behind me as I pass.
      In most jurisdictions there is no time limit as you say; one must pass within a reasonable amount of time. That is why an officer will usually wait a couple of minutes to pull someone over for this infraction, so that there can be no ambiguity about whether they were in the act of passing or not.

    • @jbm71
      @jbm71 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@jasonrekker4328 Your very presence in a passing lane is by itself sufficient (by definition) to indicate to the driver in front of you that you intend to pass one or more vehicles to your immediate right once you have an opportunity to do so, that is, once the driver in front of you has finished his own passing maneuver.
      There’s no such thing as being “happy sitting behind the driver in front”. (The law requires you to wait patiently, whether you’re “happy” about it or not.) If you’re in a passing lane, by definition you ARE intending to pass (when the opportunity presents itself).
      When you add the action of flashing your lights, even if it is supposedly only to “get the attention” of the driver in front of you, it can mean only one thing that the driver in front of you doesn’t already know: that you are now “encouraging” him to finish his pass sooner so you can get on with your own pass. That flashing of lights is, in my view, a somewhat unnecessary, discourteous, impatient, aggressive act, and an inappropriate use of attempting to signal another driver.
      If you flash your lights, you are signaling the other driver, implicitly asking him to do something he’s not currently doing: to speed up his own pass. It is never appropriate to signal another driver to do something he isn’t already doing. It essentially implies you either think he’s doing something wrong (which is something only the police can judge), or you are asking him to do something “for you”. In neither case is it appropriate to signal the other driver. The only appropriate uses of signaling another driver are either to warn him of an action that YOU are about to take, to tell him that you see him and acknowledge what he is doing, or to warn him of a potentially hazardous condition.
      It can be illegal to flash your lights at another driver. It is in some traffic law definitions one of the multiple criteria that can characterize “aggressive driving”. (So is tailgating, but it’s very good that at least you don’t do that.) Obviously if you flash too much or for too long, especially at night, it can blind him temporarily.
      BTW, I have heard that it is considered “standard practice” in Germany on the Autobahns to flash your lights at the driver in front of you to tell him to “get out of your way”, but that’s Germany. I consider it to be a discourteous, aggressive action.

    For once the law and the police are doing something we all agree with. I once was riding with a friend in his car as a passenger and we were in the left lane of a interstate type of road. I said to him, its clear here(right side), why dont you get over? He said, oh no, Im fine here, Im doing the speed limit, not speeding and the other drivers bunched up behind me can just pound salt. I kind of lost a lot of respect for him right then and there, and the friend ship degraded over the following years. I havent spoken to him in 30 years, turns out he had a falling out with many other friends in the circle as well.
