    This place is absolutely massive. Unfortunately, the hospital buildings are closed for exploration, but the extensive grounds and farm buildings still remain. We spent all day here with Tim and Leah (Decay With Us) and still didn’t cover all of the facility. 1976 saw the closure of the facility due to the state legislature cutting off all funding. So what happened to all the patients who needed help?

    Incredible how big some of those places were. I believe the bull barn is where everyone went to get coffee in the morning. You know, to shoot the bull about yesterday and today. The fenced area was for the ones that pled temporary insanity. Alas, now they run our country or sleep in the parks and streets. Great work. Loved the pin and my coffee ☕️ 😊❤

    Hi Steve and Andrea - the scale of this place is incredible. Every style of construction was used, from what looked like wattle and daub, timber, brick and reinforced concrete. Nice idea, to have a self- financing psychiatric facility, but that ceased working, if it ever did, or lack of state funding would not have closed it

    • @PinInTheAtlas

      This place is enormous and the old style buildings are beautiful. Would love to have seen it back in the day.

    One reason it's shut tight might be either asbestos or lead paint. I used to work at the clinic on Newport naval base in Rhode Island. The old, rumored hospital next door was locked up tight because of asbestos. I think it's still standing as well as nice officer housing for the same reason

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes that is another good reason Virginia. It’s the architecture of the old days and the curiosity of what the layout is like what could they have left behind that we always want to see!

    What an interesting place, so gigantic. I had no idea about this one, but I live somewhat near a similar place, which is much smaller, and still active. I've heard, from several friends, that burying the deceased, out in a field, was done there, too. I guess in those days, it must have been a common practice. Fortunately, today I believe most people believe mental illness is real. I don't think most people think it is something to be ashamed of, and quietly locked away for. Thank you, Andrea and Steven for another amazing video.🛣👏🏻❤️‍🩹

    Very cool! The insane asylum i hung out at was a poor farm in the 1800s. It was self sufficient an the people worked it. 1914 they built new buildings. I'm surprised you didn't see s jail there. It did look like a prison there. That one place looked like a crematory. Would a body fit in that burner? That place is huge!!! I think they used the patient's for slaves. Very sad. They made movies of some of those places in the 70s. Heraldo ( not sure how to spell that) made films of some. It was terrible. Then they started cutting the funding. Excellent video thanks guys

    • @PinInTheAtlas
      @PinInTheAtlas  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is the thing about the news, they can over exaggerate and sensationalise things that may not really be wide spread and everyone starts over reacting. Same old story over and over. Some places were horrible there is no denying that, but to end up closing down all of them…

    Earlier while viewing your video my interest was sparked when it was mentioned that you weren't sure if equipment there was used for pasteurisation. I was going to mention Louis Pasteur and 1862, and that by the 1920's it was common place to pasteurise milk. But that would have been to long of a comment. I remember when that happened. I think the Federal funding was pulled first and the State funding soon followed that of the Federal. I think most of the patients went back to their families and the rest were dumped out on the street and soon filled the homeless missions. The homeless missions would give them a place to sleep and get a meal, but they were kicked out to wander the streets during the day. I use to have some advertising meetings in a greasy spoon downtown that often had folks having conversations with an empty counter stool. Today ... we would assume they using a Bluetooth phone, but are they? 🙂 Interesting explore! There was a time when farms of this nature were used to help the poor, aged, and unstable, but that all changed when a larger portion of the population became more urban and far less rural!

Some of the treatments used were also as effective as using leeches and bleeding patients ... and in a number of cases ... quite barbaric!
