Why does no one talk about World Rugby Player of the year titles when we have this discussion?? You would never say a soccer player who has only won one ballon d’or is the GOAT. Du Pont is a great player but he would have to achieve a lot more to be in Carter's (or McCaw's) league. The Carter/McCaw All Blacks were absolutely dominant for at least a decade like few teams in any sports and they were the stand out players in those teams. Here's what this Frenchman, who has been watching a lot of rugby over the past 35 years would have to say on this Dupont / Carter debate: until Dupont came along, Carter was easily the best player I had seen on a rugby pitch. He was the complete package. Dupont is technically, and in terms of rugby IQ, as good as Carter was, but the difference is that he sits down forwards 30kg heavier than him and jackals balls at the breakdown, which Carter couldn't do. Winning the RWC is not a fair assessment on a player's ability: Carter was playing in much better AB's teams than Dupont's French teams (at least to this day).

I don't like using the term GOAT because of positional advantages. 10s that are part of legendary teams automatically get catapulted into great flyhalves even if fundamentally there are better flyhalves. Whereas a fantastic tight head prop silently goes under the radar.
For me there are different categories of player:
These are the criteria to judge them on:
-Top 3 in their position at the time
-Highly influential in every team they play for
-Elevated the image of the game in their country/globally.
    1. Icon: If you have all 3 criteria filled.
    2. Legend: 2/3 criteria filled
    3. Great: 1/3 criteria filled
    4. Baller: Someone that played an entertaining brand but not quite had the consistency overtime
    Examples of players:
    1. Dan Carter, Richie McCaw, Antione Dupont
    2. Fourie du Preez, Johnny Sexton, Owen Farrell, Eben Etzebeth
    3. Will Genia, Sergio Parisse, Siya Kolisi

The point of being the GOAT is that any casual viewer will see their highlights package and know the person in question is awesome. Think Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi. People who don't watch their respective sports and no knowledge of the games will just know that they're good from seeing their highlights. Now tell me do you really think the same can be said for a non rugby viewer watching McCaw's highlights? They wouldn't know what's going on. That disqualifies him from being the GOAT. That leaves Carter. But to me, Dupont is a better all round rugby player. Carter played 10 better than anybody else. Dupont however does everything. He even jackals for the ball at ruck time and is defensively sound. That is on top of doing what 9 ought to do, very well. Dupont is already the GOAT but at the end of his career, it will no longer be a debate.

    • @AyBoogie
      @AyBoogie หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@SamWhite-no6dd The argument about highlights doesn't fully capture the essence of what makes someone the GOAT in rugby. I could show someone Israel Folau highlights and tell them he’s the GOAT. Rugby is a complex, multifaceted sport where the true measure of greatness lies beyond the flashy moments.
Richie McCaw's greatness isn't just in highlight reels but in his consistent, game-changing presence. His leadership, tactical intelligence, and ability to dominate the breakdown are crucial elements that might not be immediately apparent to a casual viewer but are invaluable to the sport. DC and Richie’s influence on the game, leading the All Blacks to two World Cup victories, is unmatched.
Dan Carter's game management and game breaking ability is second to none. His precision, decision-making, and calm under pressure shaped the All Blacks' play for over a decade. His ability to control the game, both tactically and technically, set a standard for fly-halves globally. Not to mention he’s won in every competition he’s ever participated in.
Antoine Dupont is undoubtedly a phenomenal player. However, being the GOAT isn't just about individual brilliance or versatility; it's about impact, consistency, and contribution to the team's success over a prolonged period. Dupont is on a remarkable trajectory, but to claim the title of GOAT, he will need to sustain this level and influence as McCaw and Carter did throughout their careers.
Highlight reels can show moments of brilliance, but the GOAT title in rugby requires a deeper understanding and appreciation of the sport's intricacies and the player's overall impact.

As a French supporter and Die hard Toulouse and Dupont fan, he is not the GOAT of our sport. Carter still owns that title. I do think this RWC 2023 failure hurt him bad and his achievings post-RWC are what’s making him slowly entering into that GOAT conversation.
Winning a CC title, a Top 14 championship title (regardless of anyone who say otherwise, it’s the league that holds the title for the 4 past CC editions..) and a Olympic medal through that post RWC grieving is what’s making him an undoubtedly very special player. Challenging himself for that Gold medal, Preparing during 6 months while managing everything physically mentally and psychologically with his staff and winning it is by far one of the most impressive achievements this sport will ever see.
I’ve seen many fans especially in the South put up this argument that he needs to win a RWC to solidify his status even further.
And I would tend to slightly agree. It is however a bit too soon for us to really be able to thoroughly judge his impact on the game for the next generations of French rugby and world rugby in general.

A "legend" of the game has the ability to turn around the game so Mo'unga is not even there. Carter was immensely skillful, so is Dupont, they have both redefined their position. Trophies are less of a criteria for me because we don't know if Dupont will ever win a World Cup with France and Carter has not won a Champions Cup with Racing 92 either. This show rugby is a team sport. What is interesting with this Olympics Seven is that France was not even in contention before Dupont turned up a few tournaments ago. The minute he joined the team, France won two tournaments and now they won Gold beating Fiji in the Final so there is no doubt Dupont brings an aura to whatever team he is in, just like Carter did in the British & Irish Lions tour. Dupont won everything he could won in the Northern Hemisphere Top 14, European Champions Cup, Six Nations... No doubt his only objective now will be to win the World Cup. He will return with a revenge for the RWC in Australia because he knows les bleus should not have lost that 1/4 Final against the Boks, les bleus were a bit naive at times and not as ruthless as the Boks, the question is can a French player get away with it... Dupont would have learned greatly from that but before he goes to World Cup mode, for me he has to win another Grand Slam beating Ireland. France should focus on Ireland first and foremost this year. We have not been super convincing against Ireland and it is without a doubt one of the teams France will have to beat in a World Cup. Winning a series down under would be nice, but France is not a franchise rugby system so I don't know whether les bleus will be ever able to travel in full squad or do like they did in Argentina (or Australia before) and travel with a B team. It would be useful to add a series down under but it is easier done in a franchise system where your Union decides whose players to rest. In France, private clubs decide and if the agreement says no, that's what it is. Galthie will have fewer players for the next 4 years, we know that already. Outside international windows, France will always send a B-team. Dupont is growing still but so many things can happen, Galthie needs to learn from his mistakes too in terms of coaching. Dupont can be instrumental but he won't win the next RWC on his own because Carter has not either. It is a team effort and many parameters go into it.

    1. How do you measure the "GOAT" (key word Greatest)
    2. How do you measure a "Great"
For the first point I think you need to break it down between greatest back and greatest forward, because the criteria is so different for what makes them great. Greatest back of all time is DC, he has the most international points, was top class from the start of his career to the end, high impact player and match winner. And to prove that he won two RWCs and 3 World player of the years, not to mention played a pivotal role in the ABs being the best sports team in the WORLD (across all sports) for almost 10 years. There's no doubt in my mind he's the GOAT (he averaged 14 points A GAME). Will DP be a great? Sure. Will he be the GOAT. Highly unlikely.
Richie is the Greatest forward of all time hands down, and if you have to have one, he also beats DC in my books for his longevity and how he lead the ABs out of the darkest era (2008 QF knock out) in our history. Plus he was a gun on the field, innovator, match winner etc.etc.

Just a general side note...with any player, of any team sport, it will never come back to a single fella to win sthg like a WC (or Huge KO competition with importance for the sport in question).
BTW I'm Argie and I do know a thing or two of this sort of Messianic train of thought...yet no Maradona, Messi, Porta, Ginobili or whomever wins anything on its own in a team sport, of course some can be sooooooooo instrumental and special that would help to get the title in a massive way, but it's never that simple, the first major thing it's having an actual TEAM, in its true meaning.
The silly ONE GOAT thing it's stupid with every sport, worse in team ones. They would always be several GOATs for every period on any sport.
Yet if we like to entertain the comparions, or going for the I preffer this fella among anyone ever, I think we should focus should be more in the players themselves, their atributes, talent and their club carreers in relation to his consistency in his perfomances. Later will come their NTs matches and their typical KO structure. With these sort of competitions we should not only thinking of them in terms of winning those, but more in terms of producing notable perfomances and avoiding producing too many shyte shows.
If a player does it in a WC, the better, if he does it in good form? even better, if he is quintassential to win a WC? a lot lot better if he actually wins it with a great level, a very high point in his carreer
WCs has a lot of weight and romatnicism on every sport. But it should be the focal point, it should be one of the poinst and more focus on how a player lost in those or won those.

Winning a World Cup should not be the sole criteria, first of all because Rugby remains a commonwealth sport, winning a World Cup playing for the ABs or the Boks is a lot easier than with any other teams. Put it frankly there has been a bias for decades, some teams are allowed more than others and when those teams only live for that one event playing a bogus championship in between, believe it or not they have it handed over, literally. The greatest All Blacks and Springboks on the planet proved that outside this pampered environment tailored to protect them, their actual impact is minimal. Carter brought very little to Racing 92 and Perpignan before that, Kalisi brought nothing to Racing 92, Whitelock brought nothing to Pau, Pitau brought nothing to Bristol and other clubs he played for, in fact the list of big SH names who just pancake outside their well pampered franchise system is humongous. We all know Super Rugby is a parody of a championship only built to help the SH sides to train without major risks to their physique and their spirit. When these players are out of their cocoon and they are asked to win trophies in championship were seasons are long, competitive and grueling and where the threat of relegation brings the best out of every clubs and players involved, that's where you see the true legends of the game. And sometimes you have great surprises like Victor Vito whose move from SH to NH did not impact his work ethic and performance whatsoever but players like these are rare and players like these are not considered legends of the sport in their own country. What Dupont did in Rugby 7 is to take an average team that won zero trophies to win 4 trophies including an Olympic Gold against reigning Champions Fiji. Imagine Dan Carter playing for Japan in Rugby XV and taking them to a Webb Ellis trophy title. That's how much of an impact Dupont had on this France side. Now, I want Dupont to win a World Cup because France has been trounced so many times but at least I know that when it will happen for les bleus it will be by merit. We have been to Hell and back so many times, nothing can hurt us anymore, not as much as it hurts the sport of rugby internationally anyway. Rugby is doing well in France, not so well in the World Cup winning Nations, maybe you ought to ask you why.

for example at 27 Carter was yet to win a WC, and already in the greatest 23 we've ever seen, had 1 player of the year (same as Dupont) and less accolades than Dupont.
of course its all Theoretical because he could hang up his boots tomorrow, but if he doesn't and he continues at the rate his at the moment he'll likely over take the great DC bar world cup triumphs and that simply comes down to when it really matters SH teams are just much better at grinding out wins as a team.
The impact he's currently having on rugby has never been seen, millions of people debating- hoping over to 7's and dominating that just for a laugh- the most marketable player in the world.
considering he's already achieved more than carter did at 27 whilst not having 3 or 4 of the greatest ever players in his international side with him (like DC had) it makes no sense why people cant comprehend that he could potentially end up as the greatest weve seen.
