I just finished it recently and really enjoyed it. Honestly, I found the political scheming a little bit harder to follow compared to something like Pillars of the Earth, but I *really* enjoyed the contrast of the two cultures. The best description I heard of this book is that it reads like alien first contact. Really cool read for that experience.
Since you really liked Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa, Vagabond, & appreciated Shogun, you should consider Taiko by Eiji Yoshikawa. It is a fictionalized account of the 2nd great unifier of Japan, Toyotomi Hideoshi.
If you've missed Clavell's "King Rat", you really should check it out. My sergeant, while on my military service, basically ordered me to read it - a fantastic read! I think I ate it for two days (a lot of "free" time there, lol). He could not believe that I read it so fast and asked me tons of questions. Then he could not believe that I ACTUALLY read it this fast. 😅
