I'm just imagining that he actually throws away the spear into like, a trash can or a recycling bin and some worker at a trash plant just pulls it out. Worker: "Boss, we got something new." Boss: "What is it?" Worker: " A spear, Sir."
Odood19 Yeah a lot of people like them. It's probably because you know they're cheap so you feel like it is the most accessible thing that you can make.
If you're in the apocalypse, find a Hacksaw for the cutting, a fire for melting, your body weight for clamps, a bracing bit drill for the drilling, a file for the bevelling and a hammer and nail trick for a rivet
you are one of my top 3 youtubers i have been watching your vids for awhile now and your channel has grown by a lot thaks for the great content and insperation
Thanks for the video. My friend and I made these and they are awesome. They work so well and are super sharp. If you can make a spear with interchangeable heads that would be really cool. Thanks!!! I am going to make a lot more of your projects in the future. Proud subscriber!!!
I love how objective you are bro. Chances are you'll never even see this comment, but just know you have that mindset that'll take care of you in even the most dire situations. Always support and respect bro keep on kickin ass!
Hi Eli I've only been watching your videos for about 2 months I think but I love all of the and I've been really inspired to try and make some of my own weapons but I haven't been able to. But today I decided to try and I made a all wood knife I carved out of a Small rectangular piece of wood. Thanks for being a great TH-cam and keep posting more great videos
Just found your channel, and not only are you extremely resourceful (reminds me of all the stuff I used to screw around with and try to build when I was a kid) your sense of humor is great Keep up the awesome work!
I only recently discovered this channel, and I've been very impressed by the videos. I'm a new subscriber. That said, my one issue with some videos, like this one, is that the starting premise is: "How can I make a cheap spear if I absolutely needed one to survive, and only had a little bit of money?" but the spear, which is dirt cheap in raw supplies, is then crafted using power tools that you might not own, or specialty tools like the riveter that I do not own. I did like this video, but that's just a pet peeve that I've noticed in some similar videos.
You can drill several small holes along the length of the spear and fill with foam, might make it stronger and keep it from exploding if it were ever struck from the side. Also will still be light weight. Just an idea!!
Made one with a little added weight I put sand/dirt in on one side and capped it off so it could penetrate more I also added a few notches in the steel to give it a hooking motion so it can't be just pulled out 👌👌
Dangerous days, hmm I'll have to think about that phrase and what it means, but anyway your a promising guy,and I can see a really really bright future ahead of you in weapons crafting, and the fact that you come up with ideas on how to make weapons out of ordinary house hold items really impresses me,you just gotta use that technique in the wild, like knowing how to make weapons out of nature will really come in handy for the upcoming world in a few years, keep up the great work
what i did is take hose clamps and a sawzall blade and attached them to a metal broom stick from the dolar store and it is super cheap and goes thru metal and really deep into any wood and is fairly strong for a spear
Nice idea for javelins. Their is a way of getting more power out of your through by wrapping a cord around the javelin but I don't remember how to do it any more.
That is the bare essence of a survival weapon, making something from whatever is lying around. I have made spears from broom handles, PVC, metal pipes, etc with anything from sharpened metal bits to knapped glass bottles for spear tips. It's about whatever you can make work from whatever material you can find. The key is to know that you need to make a tool for yourself, then apply human skill to get it done. Even though we live in a modern industrial world, it's good to know ancient survival craft. You never know when you will be lost in the woods, or in a plane crash or something in which your very survival may depend on those skills. And if you never use those skills in a real world situation; who cares? Making primitive tools and practicing survival skills in fun!
Made a relativly cheap, but sturdy spear. Most of the value is in the work, which mostly involves the wrap, and cutting of the slot for the head. broom handle (2.40$), heavy-duty throwing knifes (Ca. 3$ a pop), 14 kg fishing line (7$), and some glue, which i just had laying around
TheAussieStig30 it'll increase weight depending on what you use, but that's actually a great idea you'd just need probably a quarter of a tub of plaster of paris or a dowel rod that's big enough.
TheAussieStig30 A poplar dowel greatly increases the stiffness and strength. Most hardware should carry a size slightly larger than the inside diameter of 1/2' pvc. You can sand the rod down by hand and it will fit tightly inside without glue, also if the inside breaks, the broken pieces can be removes
On the topic of tempering blades and the like there are a few forge designs out there that only require your blow torch to heat them if u still have it
You could always replace the pvc with metal conduit. It's cheap and much stronger. And for those who don't have a a riveter, a nail and hammer can do the same thing, just takes more work. ;)
I wonder if you could add some metal to the forward third of the spear cheaply, like a shod quarterstaff-type design, to give them some staying power in close range? I mean even some hanger strap would be enough to give the PVC some rigidity, and the flex is what causes them to shatter. For that matter you could pour some urethane foam inside as well to give them some more strength, or pad them somehow.
If you filled the empty space with sand and capped off the end that would provide more momentum energy on impact and possibly add structural rigidity to the shaft.
Hey +ZednoughtAlpha I saw in a video about primitive bows and arrows that some hunting points had sort of onesided edges. I mean like grind only the right edge all the way through, like on a butterknife, turn it around and then do it on the other right side. This is supposed to cause a spiral wound cavity. Well on something as heavy as a spear, it would probably just put more force on the blade and break the spear where they are attached.
have you tried filling the pvc with compacted sand to stiffen up the shaft and add some weight?? would be chill if you made a video on that. thanks for reading this comment. enjoy the content.
I gave these spears a try and I found it a little bit more stable and have a bit more penetrating power if you added something simi hevy at the back end of the PVC...
hey, crazy idea to make these a bit more combat reliable. Take some driveway markers (length of the spear internally), tape them together, shove them inside, then add a cap at the end. Its a few bucks more, but you can then actually handle somewhat solid strikes without completely devastating the PVC. In theory anyway.
This is why I subscribed to this channel. You could always fill the spears with cement to make them stronger, or fill the tube with something solid like wood and cap it off, so...cheap as fuck, and effective.
Hey buddy I have an idea for October how about you make tutorials about how to make an armor similar to deathstroke ( the best DC assassin ) I think your videos might get viral then or something but that's just a suggestion not forcing you to do it
Hey Eli, just wanted to let you know that your videos are amazing and they have inspired me to make some weapons of my own. I might send you some of them so you can let me know what you think. Keep up the good work.
Maybe to make them stronger add a fiberglass core? I don't know how bad that would kill the "dirt cheapness" but it's an idea. Keep up the good work ZNA
the shattering means that your opponent can't really block with them. (in the event that you missed, or jim pulled the spear out of bob's head) many projectiles in ancient times were designed to make reusing the projectile without a decent amount of work difficult. it's why arrows usually had their heads held on with friction and/or maybe a bit of glue or tree sap: so your enemy couldn't pick up any missed shots and easily loose them back at you. also, to add weight to the spear (since throwing weapons need SOME weight to penetrate, and I suspect these are a little too light on their own) you could throw spent batteries into the handles, and either screw another rivet or screw into them, or throw some glue down in there (though a pin is easier to make than glue)
Hey I'm a beginning "blacksmith" and I was wondering what you would think would be the best metal working tool I should buy. I said "blacksmith" because I'm 15 and I don't have an actual workshop or anything like that. And you should do a video on making shurikens (ninja stars) out of metal outlet box covers. Thx in advance for the help and consideration.
They may have a little mor throwing power if you fill the blade half of the pvc with something, a wood dowel or anything to give the front some more weight.
A way to make the spear stronger is by using a wood handle off something like a rake or shovel then just using the pvc as a connection point to the metal piece then use then do everything the same way by heating the pvc up putting of the handle and inserting the point and the screw. makes it much stronger and keeps the price and the work time down
Instead of using a wooden shaft for the normal spear(not the cheep ones) you could use the bottom of some metal blinds/shades/window cover and just fit the tip so it goes right in to the slot, it's durable and dont brake easy (if you get the right ones) thanks for reading my comment
Pvc will not shatter that easy if you store it out of the sun. Sun light and heat dries out the resin in the pipe. When we plumb in new homes we are required to paint the pvc above the roof for this reason.
if you put some fiberglass rods into the pvc pipes, that would increase the weight and the durability, so you could swing the spear at a target with less of a chance of it breaking, right?... or am I just stupid?
There is only one problem with these, the opponent can throw them back.. What about making some simple roman style throwing spears? They are spears where the tip breaks off after hitting something, leaving the opponent with only a stick. You can maybe make it so that the tip falls off after throwing them you are still able to put them together without too much effort.
Or just coat the head with snake venom. You can't throw a spear back if your veins and arteries are bring destroyed from the inside, leading to a painful death due to internal bleeding
***** slight barbs (or just a serrated edge) and forgo the rivet and the blade would stick in the target. maybe (if you're using an angle grinder instead of a hacksaw) you could also cut a hole down the center of the blade to allow more bloodflow around the stuck blade.

Reminds me of the line from Crocodile Dundee. "That's not a knife, THIS is a knife". 🤣
Dude, your dirt cheap videos are my favorite.
Odood19 Yeah a lot of people like them. It's probably because you know they're cheap so you feel like it is the most accessible thing that you can make.
michael neely well you're not wrong 😊
If you're in the apocalypse, find a Hacksaw for the cutting, a fire for melting, your body weight for clamps, a bracing bit drill for the drilling, a file for the bevelling and a hammer and nail trick for a rivet
This is the only thing I will ever be able to actually make from a TH-camrs instructions like it’s cheap and easy
I love how often you've been uploading recently.!
Loving these budget builds easy to make and cheap😊
First
I stove most of your username >:D
ZednoughtAlpha i waz first skrub
I love the constant uploading
Dude Thx, for uploading quicker, your an inspiration to me, and awesome vid
Have u ever tthought about making a cheap(something similar in price as these pvc) spears with broom handles?
you are one of my top 3 youtubers i have been watching your vids for awhile now and your channel has grown by a lot thaks for the great content and insperation
Love this! Easy to make, not complicated at all, and super cheap!
Wow three videos in the same week. keep em comin eli
I've actually used this method of combined steel and pvc before in a couple of my videos and really like it! Great video, love the spears
love how it was done in less than half the vid
very simple concept
Hi Eli I've only been watching your videos for about 2 months I think but I love all of the and I've been really inspired to try and make some of my own weapons but I haven't been able to. Hes definitely got a future on youtube.....* goes to check him out "
" This Channel Does Not Exist "
wellllll......what happened to him ?
he probaly got too many copy right strike on music so i got terminated or something
Good point!
Tristan Dickson thanks
Talking about the guy that made a spear with a combat knife?
maybe
Just found your channel, and not only are you extremely resourceful (reminds me of all the stuff I used to screw around with and try to build when I was a kid) your sense of humor is great
Keep up the awesome work!
Valk1080 Thanks dude. means a lot.
I only recently discovered this channel, and I've been very impressed by the videos. I'm a new subscriber.

Im going to find this guy when the apocalypse comes along.
very true.
Good luck trying to beat 600,000 other people with the same idea.
Nope. I call dibs
Its here
Tide Pods you got me shook bro
You're honestly my new favorite youtuber, as a broke guy who loves stabbing stuff, you are no doubt the best youtuber on the web!
Epic video. I've been wanting cheap DIY javelins for a long time now...
i have built about every weapon featured here and i have to say you really know what your doing keep it up .!
Love the vids started watching 4 years ago please don't stop making vids
I have always loved spear throwing and this is the perfect design for me since I go through so many thankyou so much. :D
You should totally do an armory video where you show all your weapons and armor!
You should do an atlatl build
A what?
my day is always better when one of ur vids is part of it.
if you just wrap the PVC in some heavy duty strapping tape it'll greatly strengthen it from lateral snapping.
You can drill several small holes along the length of the spear and fill with foam, might make it stronger and keep it from exploding if it were ever struck from the side. Also will still be light weight. Just an idea!!
Made one with a little added weight I put sand/dirt in on one side and capped it off so it could penetrate more I also added a few notches in the steel to give it a hooking motion so it can't be just pulled out 👌👌
Nice build, probably one of your easiest and less intimidating than others. I might try this.
Dude I think that u have the coolest ideas! I have a suggestion that u could make throwing spikes out of long and think nails.
Amazing videos dude! I've never subscribed to a channel this fast.
I love it when I'm in that survival situation with power tools
We need more of this, decent quality (In comparison to other $3 spears) and cheep spears. I love it, i am so going to make some! +1 sub
your videos always put me in a great mood.
if there is ever a fallout or zombie style apocalypse, im gonna wanna find this man's garage

Dan Morgan Atlatl is pretty similiar
Also, if you found Dowling, the same diameter as the inside of the pvc, you could add weight and durability to each spear
That is the bare essence of a survival weapon, making something from whatever is lying around. I have made spears from broom handles, PVC, metal pipes, etc with anything from sharpened metal bits to knapped glass bottles for spear tips. Finally, I can protect myself from pirates.
You could pack the hollow tubes with pva glue ladened newspaper to make it stronger have alot more impact.
Made a relativly cheap, but sturdy spear. Most of the value is in the work, which mostly involves the wrap, and cutting of the slot for the head. broom handle (2.40$), heavy-duty throwing knifes (Ca. 3$ a pop), 14 kg fishing line (7$), and some glue, which i just had laying around
i made several of these and i find that if you fill them up with plaster it definetly strengthens the spear but also makes it heavier
I think PVC could be made a lot more solid by inserting something in the middle of it. Maybe some dowel, or even some plaster mix or concrete.
TheAussieStig30
it'll increase weight depending on what you use, but that's actually a great idea
you'd just need probably a quarter of a tub of plaster of paris or a dowel rod that's big enough.
Some kind of liquid rubber might work great too.
TheAussieStig30 makes it heavy and sorta defeats the purpose of pvc
TheAussieStig30 A poplar dowel greatly increases the stiffness and strength. Most hardware should carry a size slightly larger than the inside diameter of 1/2' pvc. You can sand the rod down by hand and it will fit tightly inside without glue, also if the inside breaks, the broken pieces can be removes
The dowel idea sounds good but I
don't really like the idea of using concrete or plaster
I've used a hair dryer to soften PVC before. It takes longer than a heat gun would, but it works if that's what you have.
I watched this when it first came out and here I am almost a year later watching it again, time goes by fast
On the topic of tempering blades and the like there are a few forge designs out there that only require your blow torch to heat them if u still have it
great video thanks for sharing. I wonder if a can of expansion foam sprayed inside the pVc would help a little
hey . I'm new too all fo this but u are a great youtuber I have seen ur videos before I got my channel and I am realt impressed. Ur awesome dude
Nice job man! I might have to give these a shot! Keep it up
You could always replace the pvc with metal conduit. It's cheap and much stronger. And for those who don't have a a riveter, a nail and hammer can do the same thing, just takes more work. ;)
made this with some modifications
those are:
used scrap steel (couldn't find lumber straps)
used hex bolt and cap
I wonder if you could add some metal to the forward third of the spear cheaply, like a shod quarterstaff-type design, to give them some staying power in close range? I mean even some hanger strap would be enough to give the PVC some rigidity, and the flex is what causes them to shatter. For that matter you could pour some urethane foam inside as well to give them some more strength, or pad them somehow.
If you filled the empty space with sand and capped off the end that would provide more momentum energy on impact and possibly add structural rigidity to the shaft.
Have you thought about making an atlatl?
They work very well, are insanely cheap to produce, and work as a club when you run out of javelins.
Hey Eli, at what distance you were throwing the spears?
I've been subscribed since your first video I am so glad to see your doing well
Hey +ZednoughtAlpha I saw in a video about primitive bows and arrows that some hunting points had sort of onesided edges. I mean like grind only the right edge all the way through, like on a butterknife, turn it around and then do it on the other right side. This is supposed to cause a spiral wound cavity. To make these stronger could you put wood or road markers inside the pic?
I gave these spears a try and I found it a little bit more stable and have a bit more penetrating power if you added something simi hevy at the back end of the PVC...
In all fairness there’s a glorious invention called the 9mm glock that’s pretty cheap but I love these videos
hey, crazy idea to make these a bit more combat reliable. Take some driveway markers (length of the spear internally), tape them together, shove them inside, then add a cap at the end. Its a few bucks more, but you can then actually handle somewhat solid strikes without completely devastating the PVC. In theory anyway.
yo eli, can u make a weapon collection video? a video where u 'show off' all ur weapons uve made over the years. and maybe test em all too.
Hey Eli, I had an idea for you. You could do a build set called "Zednaught Hoplite". Just thought you might like that.
Made some but i found that using duct tape to add quick and easy fletchings (like on an arrow) gives them stability
completely not related to the build but u need an outro to show some other builds uve made and direct people to some more videos
vdragonjr Agreed
+vdragonjr Who is with this human???? Because i know for damn sure that the aliens and i are with him 99.99999999999991%
I watched all your video and i was inspired to build a 82 inch sword with paracord handle and a shout you are the best keep on building
A cool idea I have is using some type of strong but light metal and having a 2 foot Handel and a elbow at the top. So it's sorta like a war hammer
really awesome video. quality improving as always.
I've been watching since your first vids and have made some of your weapons keep up the good work
This is why I subscribed to this channel.
You could always fill the spears with cement to make them stronger, or fill the tube with something solid like wood and cap it off, so...cheap as fuck, and effective.
Hey buddy I have an idea for October how about you make tutorials about how to make an armor similar to deathstroke ( the best DC assassin ) I think your videos might get viral then or something but that's just a suggestion not forcing you to do it
These are amazing, keep these great videos up!
Hey Eli, just wanted to let you know that your videos are amazing and they have inspired me to make some weapons of my own. I might send you some of them so you can let me know what you think. Keep up the good work.
@ 0:53
Shrapnel is good tho. It can do widespread damage if you have enough force behind it.
Maybe to make them stronger add a fiberglass core? I don't know how bad that would kill the "dirt cheapness" but it's an idea. Keep up the good work ZNA
well to make it less likely to break and still be light weight fill the pvc with expandable foam
the shattering means that your opponent can't really block with them.
Hey ZNA why don't you try and put some fiberglass rods in the PVC to make it stronger
They may have a little mor throwing power if you fill the blade half of the pvc with something, a wood dowel or anything to give the front some more weight.
jared blah True. Preferably something free, as this is a budget build.
A way to make the spear stronger is by using a wood handle off something like a rake or shovel then just using the pvc as a connection point to the metal piece then use then do everything the same way by heating the pvc up putting of the handle and inserting the point and the screw. makes it much stronger and keeps the price and the work time down
fill with melted foam and it'll take away the explosive trait of the pvc. but it'll also give it a little weight
Put some of that fiberglass inside of it just like the PVC bow to stop the flexing.
Instead of using a wooden shaft for the normal spear(not the cheep ones) you could use the bottom of some metal blinds/shades/window cover and just fit the tip so it goes right in to the slot, it's durable and dont brake easy (if you get the right ones) thanks for reading my comment
You could put some fiber glass rods inside the pvc to reinforce it
this was the first build of yours that I ever built
I'm sure you could also make throwing knifes the same way I would personally love to see you make some
zednaught a way to may the PVC more flexible is to reinforce it with a fiber glass rod
The added pattern tape should cut down on the fragmentation of the PVC if it were to break. :)
Pvc will not shatter that easy if you store it out of the sun. Sun light and heat dries out the resin in the pipe. When we plumb in new homes we are required to paint the pvc above the roof for this reason.
Came to watch it again before u have to take it down
you should try to make brass nuckles or gloves with spikes on them
if you put some fiberglass rods into the pvc pipes, that would increase the weight and the durability, so you could swing the spear at a target with less of a chance of it breaking, right?... or am I just stupid?
Could you do a short video talking about your ear jewelry I do not know if I'm the only one interested but I am one person who is interested
No, they are camouflage so the enemy can't find them. Jk, good idea.
TheDutchWolfx I like the idea. Very good suggestion, if you don't mind my saying.
They're called Pilum.
