It has been a year, how are they doing? My miltoniopsis seem to do well for a year then orange rot seems to set in. I’ve tried all the varieties of media. Not sure what to do differently.
The miltoniopsis are doing ok, some are a little dehydrated with the hot summer we've been having. They are making it through. Orange rot can be tricky to treat. It doesn't seem like a media issue, but perhaps a fungal or bacterial infection is taking hold. Usually happens when a plant is stressed or weak. Might be necessary to treat before you see symptoms with fungicide/Physan 20 to prevent it from occurring. I did this about 2x a year, soak Milt pots with some dilute physan20 to kill off any potential bad microbes and I think it helps keep the bad microbes away for a while. It's not a cure-all, but it may help them chug along. Best of luck!
Thanks! I think I caught the orange rot before it could progress to the rest of the plant. Sometimes it survives and sometimes it dies. Hoping I get lucky this time around :)
Usually, no. I try to cut off the infection to the point where only healthy tissue remains. Adding some cinnamon, wax, or something to the open wound could help seal it and prevent any additional infections. If the entire plant looks to be unwell, then applying some Physan20 or other similar bactericide/fungicide can prevent further issues.
I just trim the unsightly leaves. If it keeps progressing, then I treat it with physan 20 or hydrogen peroxide to kill the fungus that causes spotting. Otherwise, it could be a salt buildup issue that leads to leaf tip dieback...then I would flush the pot with water and cut back on fertilizer.
I threw away the bulb with the orange rot. It was infected. If the orange area was small, you can cut it out, but in this case, it was better to remove the bulb and stop the rest of the plant from getting infected too.
That's pretty cool, that your Pink Lemonade has been with you for 4 years! I always wondered what that orange stuff was. Have you ever detected any funky odors from weak/sick Miltoniopsis? I've had some in the past that once something weakened them, they would give off a weird odor. I just lost my last Miltoniopsis, which was a Hajime ono, to thrips😥.
Yea, some of my Milts got root rot and erwinia and died quick. The erwinia and bacterial rot made the whole plant and media smell fishy. This one didn’t get to that stage so I think it’s safe for now 🤞
