- In today's episode, I'll discuss some miltoniopsis orchid mistakes that I've made and what we can do to prevent bad things from happening. I'll share what I've learned growing these beautiful miltoniopsis orchids in Southern California.

It looks like you have some Miltonia and some Miltoniopsis in this video. They look a lot alike but have different care. The flowers with the pointed tips are Miltoniopsis, but the soft round flowers that look like pansies are Miltonia!! Markets tent to mix up that labels since they’re so similar. The pseudobulbs on Miltonia are also longer and fatter, while Miltoniopsis is shorter and more compact. Miltonia is often the less fussy one and likes indoor temps. Miltoniopsis is more difficult and like heat and humidity. Miltonia smells amazing, like spices, but Miltoniopsis has little or no fragrance! ❤ So if a few of your orchids aren’t doing as well, they may be mislabeled. Great video!!
Wrong. Miltonias are the pointy ones that look like stars and originate from Brazil. Miltoniopsis are the pansy orchids from higher elevation.

Nice video! Great tips! That's very useful, knowing about the tendency for waterfall patterns to be cooler growers and the white/light yellow miltonopsis warmer growers based on their lineage. I'm always in awe seeing your Hilo Galaxy. Can't wait to see it in a bloom video again. 😊

My favorites, good information! And indeed they like light but no direct sunlight. And if they grow they start to drink quite a lot. The blooms are so beautiful 🤩

Hi! I've kept a poor miltiniopsis alive for over a decade now, but I don't think I'm doing it right! I get a couple flowers a year, but my leaves never get longer than a few inches (LOTS of accordions!) For the first few years, I kept it detained in a little ramekin, with like a tablespoon of silty, sandy soil. Those were the best years of it's life. I separated it, gave one to my mom, one to my sister (sister killed hers, mom's is doing okay), and when I did that, I totally changed the medium (blocky wood w/ coconut fuzz), and it's been sad since. Just recently started misting often with a spray bottle, and that's the happiest it's been since separation. Also added a bit of mineral soil to the medium. Will *definitely* take your advice into consideration, I've never thought to look up how to care for these beauties! But you're right, they smell sweet for an orchid! *edit I put it in an aerated pot when I took it out of the ramekin. Seeing what you keep yours in, I think I was closer with the ramekin! Thanks again!

Thanks for the video! Would you comment on brown edges on some of your flowers? I have this problem on one Mlts: after starting blooming in a week or two each flower starts drying from the edges. The other two Milts are fine so far.Definitely not pests, north window, watering every second day. Thanks!
It could be due to lower humidity in the overall environment. Also, I notice that white and cream colored flowers tend to dry out more than other colorations.
I'm on the Gulf coast of Texas. I have central air conditioning in my home during summer. It's always humid here. Would these grow here in my home during the summer in a temp of 75f all summer? I can put them outside later in fall when the temps fall below 85f. What do you think? They are definitely beautiful.
I have my first one (I didn't kill) in full bloom 😁 It grows in the shade and sits in a semi-terrestrial mix, the same I use for Zygo's. I keep it wet at 75 to 85 F with a very high humidity

The red spotted on is Miltoniopsis Breathless 'Hilo Galaxy'. It's a clone from the Milt. Breathless variety.

No I have not, I have not tried water culture.
