I cannot thank Mr. Pearlman enough. I am a beginner at a very late date. And I have carpenter's hands, old hands, ugly hands. His are the hands of a boxer and yet his music is sublime...
That grin that he has on his face for the whole last part of the Tchaikovsky at the end of the video shows perfectly how much he is in love with what he does. This is so fantastic, thank you so much for sharing.
big fingers make your vibrato juicier with less effort. the ideal would be large but skinny hands\fingers a la paganini. that way you have less difficulty reaching and stretching, but don't have to struggle with small intervals in high positions. I think you're really out of lucky if you had THICK hands, but short fingers. That would be a disaster.
Because that's basically it for him. A great teacher I studied with (Dora Schwarzberg) used to say that the pinnacle of knowledge is oblivion. Once you master the violin, playing becomes effortless and all you have to think about is to make music
Oooooooooooooo......... PEARLman!!! You never stop amaze people:-) I guess you had enough to fight in your life..and you're a REAL WINNER ! aaand..to your large AMAZING hands..You are a guy with a LARGE HEART:-) ..pleasant smile too;-) Thank You !!!
He is not "bitching', he is saying that a person with a larger hand often has to make allowances on the very close strings of the violin. He could have picked a cello, I am grateful he didn't!
Thanks for sharing such great clips! Agree with Chucklez - look only at his face and body language and he could be just jamming in the pub with his mates - he is just having such fun in the last movement of the Tchaik. Such a natural violinist and despite his self deprecating comments it’s amazing those super chunky fingers can have such clarity, speed and precision even in the really squashed high positions.
You are very welcome! It came from a rather short "sampler" videotape. I don't think it is available but maybe somewhere it is. I think this was the most interesting part.
@cello39mn I wouldn't call it "bitching": he is drawing a comparison between passages which are more comfortable or less so for himself to play for various reasons. That discomfort clearly doesn't prevent him from playing the less comfortable one with brilliance as we hear.
I have fat fingers and my teachers always cite Perlman to my excuses for not managing something on the violin. (I'm actually a beginner, so such comparison is farcical.) But more crucial, I think, is the shortness of my pinkie, but for some reason none of my teachers have mentioned that! I wonder why!?😆
1990 - I was there. Tel Aviv philharmonic on tour, I think first time in USSR. Incredibly enthusiastic applause from the audience, resulted in 4 encores. Zubin Mehta had former members of the Leningrad Philharmonic, who had emigrated, stand up for part of the applause, and it was a lot of people.

Strong hands my friend!

@@chriss6356 One would suspect, but I think Perlman just proved you wrong in this very video!
He makes it look literally effortless and he always looks like he's having a ball.

Best violinist of world in 20th century
Cyrus Ahadpour Yes!!!
I think even he put Heifetz on a pedestal.
@GabrielleduVent I totally agree, and I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Total control 😊
@Obadeh Mohiddin - from the Tchaikovsky Concerto, 3rd Movement.
from the ist movement of the violin concerto (a couple of minutes into the movement).

it's from Tchaikovsky Concerto
my hands are big and fat as hell but i can still play the violin!!
I guess this is why we won’t hear Perlman performing Locatelli’s eleventh concerto, huh? Or any Locatelli, for that matter?
@2010thevoice Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto

Is it inside a edited DVD or Videotape??
I'm very interested in it,
Thanks!!
