Cookery is just like they are talking about, a sort of time travel. These take them back to their childhood and those who made them childhood before. That is the wonderful thing about food connection with history. I can't wait to try to make these myself!!
22nd September 2021 Hugh i am making your smoked pollock and cheese sauce for this evening so my 14 year old son can try a little taste of my childhood Great to see the old classics
UK pancake recipe for those that are asking: 1 cup of flour 1 cup of milk 1 egg. You can add a pinch of salt to taste if you like. Mixture should be quite runny, a bit thicker than milk and coat the back of a spoon, add water if it is too thick. The most important thing is to use a whisk to ensure that there are no lumps of flour in the batter. The batter can also be used to make Yorkshire Puddings.
LOL!!! I've never even heard of this product and I've been around. Eaten quite a bit. So much that I am a round. lol However, I don't think my curiosity has ever been piqued so much. Dying to try these now.
Nicely done. England and the States have very different food memories from childhood. I've never seen this before in over 35 years of cooking. Blessings ChefMike
River Cottage A favorite childhood food memory would be my Mother's roast turkey with cornbread stuffing, a recipe originating from my Great Grandmother, who I remember fondly.
From Australia I have no idea what the guys are talking about when it comes to reproducing a childhood favorite, but I like the idea of a savoury folded-over pancake. I've used the fillings often, but I thinks the family would like the pancake alternative. Thanks gents. A great TH-cam find. (I have seen a few episodes of this show on Aussie TV. Obviously not enough!)
OH DEAR you forgot the best one of all, the "chicken n mushroom" that was the one that hit the spot for me , nevertheless the ones you DID pick all brought back childhood memories. Many many many congrats to you all. My mouth was watering all the way thhrough that clip :)
Yesterday our Muslim neighbours brought us some food round for Ramadan and on there was too little beautiful crispy pancakes. I've not had them since i was a child and wow did they bring back the memories they was absolutely divine, so I'm here now trying to find out how to make them.
Hi Hugh. I a. So pleased to see you use a wooden spoon rather than the whisk that everyone is using for everything. Yes that how my mum made white sauce with a wooden spoon and that's what I use
Wow, I cook everything from scratch but this "childhood" food I always buy, now I will try it at home, thanks! One question: when you fold the pancake to make the pocket, how do you get it to stick, what's the glue? I saw eggs...anthing else? Creamy, cheesy mushrooms pocket is my next mission :)
Wow,I've been subconsciously looking for this for YEARS ! I'm doing tender rib fillet roast leftover from last night with cheese, thyme and maybe a few veg like peas. Might chop some weeds I've foraged, wild rocket, wild lettuce ,parsley. A dash of chopped fresh chives....an egg ? This will be HUGE ! Thanks for sharing. Subbd.
UPDATE: I made these today! =) i did HUGE ones with tuna and sweetcorn in a mildly cheesey sauce. I baked them on 200 fan for about 20 mins. Apart from that i pretty much just copied the technique in the video. I was concerned the pancakes would open up as i egged and crumbed them but that didnt happen., but i was careful to seal with egg and press the pancakes together fairly firmly. Other than that, just make sure you season the filling enough.
the people that bought the rights to Findus (same people that own Birds Eye) actually brought them back because of the huge blacklash lol! You can buy them in Asda and Morrisons
I English but live in Australia and we cant get them. I really crave them for some reason. I'm going to have to come off my low carb diet to cook some.
One of the best You Tube recipes ever

Except the UK usually weigh their ingredients rather than measuring them. 🙂
This is the actual recipe for the pancakes
165g plain flour
Pinch of salt
1 small egg
About 300ml whole milk
Sunflower oil for frying
Just finished 2 of the Bacon chicken and sweetcorn Crispy Pancakes, absolutely fantastic, takes me back years.
Holy wowzers... it's a recipe I didn't know I needed until now...
as a kid in the 80's/ early 90's i always got to choose what we had for dinner on my birthday and always chose crispy pancakes.
LOL!!! I've never even heard of this product and I've been around. Eaten quite a bit. So much that I am a round. lol However, I don't think my curiosity has ever been piqued so much. Dying to try these now.

That's a roast which is also a fond childhood memory for uk kids but this is more like remembering when you ate pizza pops or something as a kid
I grew up in North America, but this looks darn good. Bizarre notion - twice-fried crêpe - but darn good.
I remember them. They were awesome. Right up there with Crispy Cod Fries.

Hi i would like to have the recipt for your pancakes
It's like an empanada......sounds good to me.
How do you do the dough for the pancakes itself? Thanks
It's 3.15 am (I'm going fishing) and I'm just going to have a bowl of Shreddies ......GUTTED
Oooh I’m gonna try making my own in the air fryer by forking some oil into the bread crumbs 😁
Can you bake these in the oven or would they go to hard? i usually bake the Findus ones.
UPDATE: I made these today! =) i did HUGE ones with tuna and sweetcorn in a mildly cheesey sauce. I baked them on 200 fan for about 20 mins. Wow! that's all I have to say
3:45 I didn't even know "ersatz" existed as a germanism in the English language.
drownthedays Is it a German word? It means a lesser substitute. Something not as good as the real thing basically.
