When to Run a Channel Rescan on Your TV Set (and When Not)

  • This video talks about several situations when it's a good idea to run a channel scan (rescan) on your TV and when it is not. Too many people think that running a rescan will automatically bring back a certain station that no longer comes in but that's not always the case. I also reveal a way you can manually input a TV channel without a rescan. This can help you improve reception on hard to pick up stations.

    Very good video. You had a lot of very useful into. I actually have one of those DTV boxes you mentioned that I take with me when I travel. I learned, by accident about being able to select the actual RF channel and then move the antenna to get the signal. You had a very good tip. Also, stations are doing a BAD job keeping people informed about their repacking. When I lost a station after a repack, I had to email the engineer, who then told me they would be running on an interim antenna and low power for 6mo! But they never informed their viewers!

    I wish more tv's would have a "scan add" function to add new channels so the tuner can scan for new stations to add to what has already been found instead of scanning all over again. I found this function useful for weak signals. Those RCA converter boxes have this function.

      I can tell you that Vizio TV's have this feature. I have a Vizio TV, and in the menu for channels, it gives find channels for a full scan, and partial scan for either scanning a specific channel range, or scanning just 1 channel. T 1 channel, the RF channel number must be entered twice, both from and to. It scans without wiping out existing channels.

      My 2020/21 Vizio doesn't allow a partial rescan (or adding a channel by entering its RF channel number like my first Samsung HDTV did), but it does have a "Find New Channels" scan that merely adds newly discovered channels without deleting old ones. Nonetheless, I suspect "endless rescans" may have contributed to my having to do a warranty exchange on my first new set; I was using that setting constantly with an old RadioShack indoor antenna -- highly directional on UHF (unlike today's "multidirectional" antennas that merely favor one direction) but with rotator, good for strong-signal areas with lots of multipath interference like my old apartment, but NOT the house I live in today where the signals aren't as strong (especially on VHF-Hi) & come from different directions -- when it started flaking out. (I then broke down & got an Antennas Direct Clearstream MAX-V; that plus finding a higher elevation site for it solved most of my reception issues even though it's still indoors. I also discovered via talking with an Antennas Direct CSR that my local NBC affiliate was at reduced power due to tower damage, which has since been repaired.)

    Also, don't do a rescan late at night (after midnight, & before 6 AM) when some stations may actually be off the air. Sometimes stations just add a subchannel without notice. Had someone say did you see XYX on 9.4, so did a re scan to get it. Would think a station would want viewers to know "there's a new sub-channel rode into town". One bad feature of my set is doing a re-scan erases all the hidden ones so I have to do the channel hides for home shopping, two kid channels etc. Royal pain, but hey better than $75/mo for limited cable c***.

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most TV tuners have the ability of adding subchannels without the need of a rescan. As long as a TV station isn't changing RF channels, the tuners can pick up the subchannels from the TV stream.

  • @r66f80
    @r66f80 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Also, another time to, sometimes, do a rescan is when your local TV stations add subchannels. Over the past 5 days, KSMO-TV Ch. 62 in Kansas City, MO added Cozi TV & Circle to Ch. 62.4 & 62.5. Also, KCTV-TV Ch. 5 (Also in Kansas City, MO.) added Quest to Ch. 5.4. I really enjoy the videos!

    • @davenwin1973
      @davenwin1973 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless you have an older TV, you shouldn't need to rescan your TV, just to add subchannels. I used to have a Magnavox converter box, along with currently owning 2 TV's (Vizio and Insignia), and I don't have to rescan when subchannels are added. I can't be on that RF channel when the subchannels are added. The exception might be, if a tuner doesn't recognize the same RF and virtual channel. This is why I believe we should have learned new TV channels, instead of keeping the analog channels for digital, in the form of virtual channels. TV stations sometimes have a glitch in their signal, that might show their RF channel instead of the virtual channel, then might conflict with a station using the virtual channel.

    My setup is with Tablo and their accompanying Guide service. I rescan everyday just to see if anything has changed; there are *five* pending Repack changes that could happen at any time during the current Phase 8. One station can't move until another moves first, etc., so I should be seeing something marked "New" when they actually pull the trigger. We had one station Repack on the very first day of Phase 7 back in October, even though they weren't required to be done until 1/17/2020. (I guess their destination RF was open, so they went for it.) If I rescan and there are no changes, I simply don't update the Guide, so I can just take a look without changing anything if it's not needed. Also, there are two local sub channels which are backwards in the Guide because the station uploaded the wrong ID and program info; they said (because I asked them) they will switch them correctly this week, so I'm watching for things like that, too.

    Thanks, I have always avoided rescans because, as you said, a station under servicing or in my case off the air due to power failure will be lost from the TV. Another problem is it may bring in a duplicate channel from a different market. I live in a rural area Zip 88310 where the DTV stations seem to be of good quality but the analog are very poor. I was receiving CH 7 from 2 different markets which meant that my DVD would not record either. Since I am disabled and cannot mount either an outdoor or attic antenna and cannot find a reliable person to do it, I use the flat antennae you don't recommend with tin foil to amplify the signal. That 2nd market is supposed to be out of range except for outdoor antennae. Have you ever heard of anyone receiving duplicate signals form different markets?

    Another great video! Keep it up! I have noticed by watching your videos that the VHF low channels (2 thru 6) are not being used all too often in various markets. That would be 54 thru 88 MHz, with a small section 72 thru 76 MHz I used to use for my remote control race car. What do you think the FCC is going to do with all that unused spectrum? What can it be re-purposed for? The antennas required are too big for pocket sized devices. Then again, there used to be a paging company (before you time) that transmitted on 35 MHz. I can't remember the exact frequency, but I was up on the roof of the building it was installed on and it's antenna was a horizontal bar with wire wrapped around it. It was so powerful that it caused RFI on all the ham radio stuff we had up there. So I guess mini ferrite bar antennas for receive? LOL

      Some people would like to have channels 5 and 6 to be repurposed for the FM band. The FCC has made it clear that they're not removing RF channels 2 to 6 from the VHF TV band. I personally wish the FCC hadn't removed 38 to 51 from the UHF TV band. Canada won't be eliminating those channels, and my understanding is that Mexico won't either. Mexico I believe must go digital next year.

    I am at my whits end. My brother recently purchased a new TV. Everything was fine. Then about 2 weeks ago the signals were changed. He has a converter box and an outside antenna. He ran a scan and it shows he gets 60 channels. Then it goes back to blue screen and says "No Signal". We ran a re-scan and a double re-scan and still "No signal". The TV is set on AIR. There is no channel (3or4) on the converter box and he put new wire on the antenna. I have read and watched so many videos trying to figure it out but I am stumped. Could you give me any ideas about what we are doing wrong. Also, I forgot to tell you, it's an RCA 4K Ultra HD TV. I would appreciate any help.

    A friend just told me he's getting rid of cable and is going to install an antenna. Some of our local TV stations are still using VHF on their digital broadcasts, so I know he can't just get a UHF antenna. Picture that we're maybe a 20/30 minute drive from most of the local broadcast towers. Can you recommend an antenna that'll give him good reception on both VHF and UHF?

      Most markets still have VHF channels. The band is included in the TV spectrum and TV channels aren't leaving the band. In fact, many are going to the VHF band due to the FCC repack. This antenna works great in suburban settings: amzn.to/31vi4Yf

    I hate running rescans for the reception issue you mentioned. Often it's a pain to get faint channels back.
    One suggestion if someone is looking for a listed channel that they're not receiving: run a partial manual scan only for the channel or range of channels that aren't coming in. For instance, for me the channels 24.1 - 25.3 are hard to get when I've positioned the antenna best for all others. I run a manual channel search for that range only while slightly adjusting the antenna. It can take a few tries, but it keeps me from possibly losing channels I already receive.

I noticed that tv channels I don't like nor watch are absolutely free of that annoying thumping. Old rerun shows, shop at home channels, game shows, Everytime have no problems ( as to search for no thumping channels). I wonder why all the channels I hate are so trouble free. Every channel I like, that annoying sound. Picture is great, the sound is horrible on those channels. To get that cleared, gotta keep trying different places to put the antenna. So to summarize.; scanning does not improve reception.
    The object of scanning is to identify as many channels as your system's can receive for your location.
    This is best conducted when all conditions are optimal for reception.
    Once a channel is listed in your TV, additional scans during poor reception conditions can only make matters worse.
