Stop Wasting Time on TH-cam I would either start with the first album “When Dream & Day Unite” or their second one “Images & Words” Both of those are great starting points in my opinion 🙂
@Stop Wasting Time on TH-cam If you're a big metalhead start with Train of Thought. It's their most metal album and helped turn me into a huge DT fan. When Dream and Day Unite is with their first singer who wasn't that good, so while the music is good I wouldn't start there (the live versions of those songs with the current singer are much better).
Agalloch is my favorite metal band. Albums like The Mantle, Pale Folklore and Marrow of the Spirit are very artistic, creative, gorgeous. Not very heavy but great to just chill to.
Yeah, Agalloch, Estatic Fear or even Haggard. More "classical" (whatever that means today) than metal, but very enjoyable. Throw there some Summoning in the middle, and it's my personal idea of a nice afternoon. To be honest, I miss Estatic Fear... just two albums and bam! They're gone ("On hold" according to Encyclopedia Metallum). Well, they say good things doesn't last forever.
Metal truly is an expressive and cathartic art form and outlet for everyone. Metal is diverse in thought and philosophy. Metal is global. Metal is therapy. Metal will live on.

How did I not know that TEDx had metal talks? Metal brought me into social awareness. I just didn't know how involved our country really was for a while. I'll be up for a while longer now watching the physics of moshing next.
Thanks for your excellent presentation. I left mainstream music because the subject matter was no longer relevant to me and the music had become empty and repetitive. Most of it was very shallow (composition- and subject-wise). With metal (all 32+ sub-genres of it) you enter a completely different world, not experienced by the masses - subject matter ranging from not only the desperate state of humanity and the planet, but also history, mythology, fantasy, science, philosophy, and compositions that could rival those of The Great Ones ("symphonic metal" from bands such as Nightwish and Epica). A lot of it is run, happy and uplifting, and a lot of it is indeed dark (for example, from the band Parasite, Inc.). I'm very happy to hear all of it. I feel it in my body (chills and goosebumps) like no other music has ever done.
Great albums. Dystopia is great for the new distrust of government the way Forbidden does. And there’s a fair amount of environmental awareness on Rust in Peace & Countdown.
fit for an autopsy, Thy art is murder, gojira, MaYaN and others all have songs about issues that plague the us or the world as a whole. Maybe people should listen to this genre so they can actually understand the seriousness of the situation we are in lol.
Damn right, I'd say many bands from the genre have - or maybe that's my tendency to listen to bands that actually include topics like these instead of bawling about a drunkard's adventure of the last night. I'm not really into drinking songs 😅. I'd probably add Heaven Shall Burn, Caliban and Epica to that list, Purest of Pain, too 🤔
I have been listening metal over 10 years and those are the top bands that I love. I couldn't understand why I love those than others. Now I know thank you 🤘
Rather than listening only metal music, I'd simply recommend listening various other music styles OUT OF YOUR PERSONAL COMFORT ZONE: etc. out of the local radio and TV, other than suggested playlists on your social media feed, other than suggested media etc.. The Metal alone is not the answer, but by listening various genres, different point of views, perspectives and stories written into songs written by multiple INDEPENDENT / UNDERGROUND artists, you may create a view of this world by yourself. Metalheads (and by default metal musicians) are generally deep thinking, sensitive, and tuned into what goes on around them. I have yet to understand exactly why, but that is clearly observable.
No music is a force of nature like Metal is. It empowers the depth of the human spirit. It reminds us to fight against the long sleep. It helps us accept the inevitable end. It is balance through power.
I dont want to link anything but strongly suggest you to listen to Mgla - exercises in futility VI (live version) or the whole album. and read the lyrics. even if you dont like the music, but i bet you can at least in some way relate to it, what they say.
Wish he brought up cattle decap. I went to school for environmental science and they’re one of my favorite bands because the lyrical content matches my class subject matter
It has been said that the average metalhead is more intelligent than listeners of other genres. In my circle of friends, and their friends, and their friends friends, I believe this, wholeheartedly, to be true.
Amazed that he didn't bring up the vegan death metal band Cattle Decapitation. Their most recent albums especially dealing with these kinds of topics. Worth reading their lyrics, really well written!
5:00 I was hoping he was leading up to a quote from Napalm Death: Multinational corporations, genocide of the starving nations Probably would have been a bit worrying for the audience if he'd sung it
If you want to hear a band feeling something you should check out the album Too Bad You're Beautiful by From Autumn to Ashes. It's certainly not the "most metal" album, but I found that album when I was 11 years old and it was my introduction to heavier music. Great example of how a writer can use language to communicate deeply and coordinate an emotional ride for the listener over the sound of organized chaos. That and Norma Jean really take me back.

Excellent video. I love metal, its about emotion, it is music designed to provoke emotion. The emotion in metal means it is one of the best social consciousness and protest artistic mediums left.
I mean, is there much else music made not to provoke emotion?
You need more art.
The video for "one" was my first heavy emotional experience. I was like 9 years old, zero animosity in my life, and then boom. This song was a warning, a preparation, a comfort. I owe my own success to songs like this.
You forgot GOJIRA!!!!!!!
Probably doesn't know them yet, they're still relatively new to the big time scene.
The most environmentally friendly metal band
Plaaaasticc Baaagg inn the seeaaaaaa
I love Gojira. I had to pick. In a longer talk I gave I talked about Gojira’s “Global Warming.”
@@PeterIsInTheForest Dude I agree with everything you said.
Heavy Metal is the Law!
It is wise, intelligent and Life-changing! It is absolutely amazing how strong metal is nowadays, especially underground. Amazing people, strong community, pure love, freedom & magic!
Hailz brothers and sisters! \m/
In The Hall.... Of The Mountain King!
Yes indeed my man
Heavy Metal is the law! Great Helloween song.
Hail all! May metal ALWAYS be the law of your lives! \m/!
Amazing talk. Thrash till death.
You liked Thrash until you heard Death metal?
Nice I like death metal too.
Recommend listening; Nuclear Assault - "Critical Mass"
Great album.
Is that a Rhett pfp?
Another oil spill!
Love that album. I’m looking for their patch for my vest lol
Andrew Bellavie yes
This speech should have been called environmental messages, from thrash metal songs.
It's almost always metallica who turned us into metalheads.
kani niaz slipknot for me
Dlxmz 14 that's because I'm probably way older than you. Lol
yea probably but my 2nd band was tool ;)
Dlxmz 14 I was never into tool. Dunno why
kani niaz for me it was disturbed that got me into metal but Metallica is what got me really further into metal and they are still my favorite bands and now my favorite bands are all thrash (not just the big 4)
Heavy metal music has more meaning than pop music
Yep and thats not up for debate.
I'm pretty sure almost any other music genre has more meaning than pop music
Fax
Metal music has more meaning than any genre. And I have listened a lot to many many genres so I can tell you with my experience metal is the most meaningful
Being better and more meaningful than pop is not some great achievement. XD
Holy... just got goosebumps. I listened to Children of the Grave this morning. No, not on my phone or computer, but on my ancient ipod. Kismet baby. I could talk metal all day!
-Love, little metal mama
Any Dream Theater fans here? I’ve been listening to them a lot lately 🤘🏻
Stop Wasting Time on TH-cam I would either start with the first album “When Dream & Day Unite” or their second one “Images & Words”
Both of those are great starting points in my opinion 🙂
Better than all the poopshitz listed here
@Stop Wasting Time on TH-cam also some opeth
Yeah 🤘
A fellow prog metalhead 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
@Stop Wasting Time on TH-cam If you're a big metalhead start with Train of Thought. It's their most metal album and helped turn me into a huge DT fan. When Dream and Day Unite is with their first singer who wasn't that good, so while the music is good I wouldn't start there (the live versions of those songs with the current singer are much better).
I really like this guy. Smart, well-educated on the topics, good examples, great speech.
They are one of my faves as well. Completely Underrated
Revocation man I'm so happy Dave and the boys are repped everywhere.
I’m so glad someone is finally educating people on metal. Thank you
Fantastic. Thanks Peter. Still rings true now more than ever.
Proud of being metal
Metal truly is an expressive and cathartic art form and outlet for everyone. Metal is diverse in thought and philosophy. Metal is global. Metal is therapy. Metal will live on.
Gotta give my man props for bringing of Xentrix. Super underrated band
Metal has kept me alive all this time
Love to see people wearing revocation shirts. Pretty underrated band
Amazing band
thanks for the recommendation! Listening now!
As a headbanger I’ve always felt that metal touches the parts of the heart that only art can. So I give this guy no thumbs but rather metal horns up! Nice talk. Although I would’ve keep those growls to my self.
yooo hes wearing a revocation shirt too. that's my favorite band \m/
Saw them live opening up for Whitechapel and Cannibal. Hadn't listened much before but now I'm a full supporter! Great live show!
How did I not know that TEDx had metal talks? Metal brought me into social awareness. I just didn't know how involved our country really was for a while. I'll be up for a while longer now watching the physics of moshing next.
A huge salute to you Sir !!!!!
I feel it in my body (chills and goosebumps) like no other music has ever done.
clicked because I have that same revocation shirt haha
SaturdayNightSocks yes!
saaameee
I have the green reanimated t-shirt from the first album myself 😏
thankyou to this man. now i know what joy Revocation is... been a metalhead 13 years and never come across them.
Its a treat for your ears
Dystopia Megadeth
Rust in Peace is better
Great albums. Dystopia is great for the new distrust of government the way Forbidden does. And there’s a fair amount of environmental awareness on Rust in Peace & Countdown.
Even the name itself Megadeth is a reference. 1 Megadeath is a million deaths caused by a nuclear bomb.
@@deltarunefan7730 Subject matter-wise, Dystopia is slightly more contemporary and talks a little more directly about real stuff than Rust.
That's what I love Metal since 1983, it puts my feet on the ground. And it's fun, virtuoso, strong and hard as real life is.
fit for an autopsy, Thy art is murder, gojira, MaYaN and others all have songs about issues that plague the us or the world as a whole. Maybe people should listen to this genre so they can actually understand the seriousness of the situation we are in lol.
Ffaa is awesome af
Yeah, but I always hear the words "I can't understand what they're saying"
Damn right, I'd say many bands from the genre have - or maybe that's my tendency to listen to bands that actually include topics like these instead of bawling about a drunkard's adventure of the last night. I'm not really into drinking songs 😅. I'd probably add Heaven Shall Burn, Caliban and Epica to that list, Purest of Pain, too 🤔
I listen to everything- seen Pantera- Obituary- I have always said metal is the truest form of music
Sincerely, A Metal Head & marketing media dingus
"Hello sir, do you have time to talk about Nightwish? Here in Finland we have this band called Nightwish and it has a message to tell." 😎🤟The message.
Wacken Open Air 2013 Ghost Love Score
Metalheads (and by default metal musicians) are generally deep thinking, sensitive, and tuned into what goes on around them. I have yet to understand exactly why, but that is clearly observable.
Why is there an esp and a $700 Marshall and he doesn’t even look at them the whole time
Now that's fishy
No music is a force of nature like Metal is. It empowers the depth of the human spirit. It reminds us to fight against the long sleep. It helps us accept the inevitable end. It is balance through power.
"Ask A Metalhead" - We need a YT channel, podcast, or other series program like that...
This guy should be the spokesperson for all metalheads
I dont want to link anything but strongly suggest you to listen to Mgla - exercises in futility VI (live version) or the whole album. and read the lyrics. even if you dont like the music, but i bet you can at least in some way relate to it, what they say.
My current favorite band. Riffs are so catchy and great drumming.
Wish he brought up cattle decap. I went to school for environmental science and they’re one of my favorite bands because the lyrical content matches my class subject matter
Be cool if he mentioned Two Minutes To Midnight by Iron Maiden, one of the best songs about Nuclear war.
It has been said that the average metalhead is more intelligent than listeners of other genres. In my circle of friends, and their friends, and their friends friends, I believe this, wholeheartedly, to be true.
Starts off talking about Metallica off on a great start I already like this guy
A wise person once said, "metal is reality".
As Ozzy says, Rock and roll is my religion and my love.
A really good TOOL for developing social consciousness 2:59
Tool ain't metal.
Amazed that he didn't bring up the vegan death metal band Cattle Decapitation. Their most recent albums especially dealing with these kinds of topics. Worth reading their lyrics, really well written!
I just can't live without Metal
I wonder what "Eaten Back To Life" can tell us about the future lol
Chelsea Thorne Homicidal fools driving automobiles will be the downfall of the American family as we know it
@@TheTrueRoker Damn, you right
More people need to watch this
kreator has a lot of great lyrics in their first albums, i love them!
Was instantly very happy to see the Revocation t-shirt! Great vid!
3:20- reference to megadeth-swetting bullets
Yep
Megadeth didn't invent that concept or saying you know, google it
@@klumpos Megadeth made it relatable and famous for metalheads, which is the topic of the talk.
At last I've got someone who is talking about metal and climate change! Superb
5:00 I was hoping he was leading up to a quote from Napalm Death: Multinational corporations, genocide of the starving nations
Probably would have been a bit worrying for the audience if he'd sung it
Proud fellow State College person
They should John Kevill the frontman of Warbringer. His philosophy of wars is incredible.
fan of metal since 10 so if ppl hates thats better to me
2019 Exit 111 this dude was in the Slayer Pit who else was there
Check out POWER TRIP
I just saw Slayer at the Giant Center in Hershey, PA. Was awesome to see them play with Ministry and Primus.
Metal music is primal and beautiful
2:43 that was actual good wtf
If you want to hear a band feeling something you should check out the album Too Bad You're Beautiful by From Autumn to Ashes.
It's certainly not the "most metal" album, but I found that album when I was 11 years old and it was my introduction to heavier music. Great example of how a writer can use language to communicate deeply and coordinate an emotional ride for the listener over the sound of organized chaos.
That and Norma Jean really take me back.
