Love this channel! Maybe because I'm "old" now, but a few months ago I took my collection of budget guitars (ex. Harley Benton level) and mid-level (ex. Mexican Fenders) that I accumulated over the years and decided to sell them off to get one expensive, but awesome guitar. Got a 1994 PRS Custom 24 off Reverb. Basically, sold off 14 budget guitars to afford one high quality guitar that I personally liked the color/paint job. Now I can't imagine going back to the cheap stuff. There is a WORLD of difference between my one PRS guitar and ALL the cheaper stuff I sold off. No contest. However, if I was younger, I'd still buy the HB guitar because it would be all I could afford and I'd rather have a budget guitar to make sound on/enjoy than save up for 10 years to get one expensive high quality guitar. The modern budget guitars of today absolutely stand up to the mid level stuff and some select expensive stuff. Enjoy!

I first heard "wiggle stick" from Rev Horton Heat back in the 90s, far superior to "tremolo bar" or even "whammy bar" for sure. I really enjoy the approach of letting the gear speak for itself, over the expectations of brand name prestige. There's great sounds at every price level and good musicians with patience, motivation, and good taste can make lots of things sound great

    • @NuclearHeadshot
      @NuclearHeadshot ปีที่แล้ว +2

You want a horror story? I'll give you a horror story. I used to run sound at a local metalhead dive, with an instrumental solo project coming up on stage. His entire kit is a guitar, a sound card, and a laptop, nothing else. His guitar "sound" was mostly whale noises level of reverb. Not even exaggerating, I would've mistaken the sound for a synth pad had he not had the guitar up. Impossible to speak with the dude since he was autistic, I didn't even know if he registered that I spoke words to him half the time. NONE OF THE PEOPLE HE WAS THERE WITH lifted a finger to help this guy communicate with me. He also ran a too heavily reverbed drum "track" from the same output, which was A SINGLE DRUM BEAT ON LOOP. No fills, no start point, no end. EVERY SONG, in which you couldn't even hear his guitar playing through the ocean of reverb. He stayed on stage for 40 minutes, 15 more than his alotted time. He said "only two more songs" four times that show, once after every song. I was, uh, "not pleased" with the guy in charge of booking him, who had a personal relation to the act. Instead of him getting some 25 minutes of fame if a single one of the people he could communicate with had helped, he got the worst crowd response ever. 80% of the clubs patrons waited outside for him to finish, the ones who stayed were there for his encouragement.
I was furious, frustrated, and felt sorry for the guy all at once. I couldn't even explain to him why I wasn't being nice after a while of not getting anywhere for a good while, with two previous tricky bands soundchecked and on an empty stomach.

    "Getting fired for challenging authority"
I can resonate with that. When I was in Job Corps(a government funded trade school) I was in welding, and the process was self paced.
One day on was on a certain task which I was struggling with, but as I finally had the groove and head space to pass that test, I was suddenly pulled out as I was randomly chosen for some bullshit extra curricular activity, organized by the campus director.
Me being that typical, 19 year old long haired dude in all black with a resting bitch face, I hanged in the corner with my music in. The director came up and asked me why I'm not participating. To which I responded "Because this is a waste of my time." "What is that suppose to mean?" "It means you yanked me out of class while I had a good work flow during a task I'm struggling on, and it's fucking FRIDAY so I'll have to wait until FUCKING MONDAY to give it another go."
Long story short, a couple months later she managed to terminate me because of some technicality. But what she said to be before I left was "You need to respect your superiors. If the U.S. President suddenly walked in, you'd shake his hand immediately." Me being me, knowing the jig is up, I responded with a [insert non-youtube-friendly-tirade].
She kicked me because I questioned and challenged her. She didn't care that I was trying to make progress in my studies, she just hated the bruise. A year later she was fired for embezzlement.

I dunno, I can't speak for TH-camrs, but my experience is that it's possible to get burned out even when you're in a white collar job you're very passionate about. In my case, I made the change from factories, mills, and warehouses to clinical social worker in a busy emergency department. Truthfully, there are some days when I come from work and I'm mentally and physically exhausted from the workload. With that said, even at its worst, it's never been as severe as when I worked on assembly lines and in industrial settings, and my feet don't hurt every second of every day like they used to. I might have to worry about getting covered in bodily fluids, but I don't have to worry about falling off a manlift of getting my arms caught in some stupid machine. Your mileage may vary.

Glenn, sometimes changing pickups makes a huge difference. I recently put spare EMG 81/85 into a guitar that had stock Epiphone pickups from 10+ years ago. It was a night and day difference and the main thing was the usability of the neck and middle position. By having close to a matched set it gave me three variations of the same thing instead of a usable stock pickup and a really muddy neck pickup.

Glenn is reliable because he doesn't just promote items to sell, he calls companies out when they mess up. I would like to see more videos demonstrating how well the equipment holds up in terms of durability and longevity. Glenn is a real one and isn't bought out like Sweetwater, Andertons or Guitar Center.

Also perfect timing with that comment on American manufacturing right on the heels of the Boeing incident. A cracked guitar is money badly spent at worst, I'd prefer if the biggest airplane manufacturer didn't get the quality control of Tesla.

”Changing your tubes out really only shifts amplitude”, you can’t say it more clearly than that!
Reading up on the basics of how a tube circuit works will tell you exactly the same thing. I play bass, if I can read and understand it, a guitar player should be able to.
    Thank you for promoting sanity!

Happy new year Glenn! On the recording with distortion topic. In your opinion, are new strings less important if you are only recording distorted guitars? Because I do ear a big difference in tone on a clean channel when having new strings, but to me it seems on a distortion channel the tone is similar with new strings vs old strings. I don't know maybe it's something you can verify... puck you Glenn!

Looking forward to February, where we get back to mix reviews, more fearless gear, and hopefully some new mix tutorials. I’d really love to see you use ELE in a mix from start to finish, seeing how you’d use the UI to tweak and perfect the drum sound in the plugin.

I think upgrading pickups does change the tone a lot if you have crap pickups to start with. I had a mid-90's LP that I thought was ok, then I bought an Iron Gear rolling mill bridge (only around £30) and it made a big difference. This was with medium to high gain settings. I think once you hit a certain threshold of quality though, the differences quickly become hard to tell apart. Anything Iron Gear/Tonerider and above is good enough to do the job.

Not exactly guitars or directly related, but all musicians will end up using some at some point and a video from a pro about the pros and cons and what to look for, what not to look for would be great... That's why I like you, Glenn! Down to earth guy and you get life! The factory style work was my life (very mind numbing) factory farming pigs for 10 years and then did some construction jobs and then I washed and fixed plastic seed boxes for the biggest seed companies in the world, shit pay for all of them, no overtime for years working in agriculture because those rich bastards don't have to pay their workers overtime for some f#$&ed up reason, the seed box cleaning factory was 12 hour days all the time, because other douches wouldn't show up to work and constantly understaffed. Now after my years of hard work, my back is completely shit now and have been through two back surgeries and more than likely will have more surgeries down the road, this has sparked music interest again I have been learning so much from you Glenn and appreciate it very much, any suggestions for music or audio jobs that you would suggest for someone physically disabled, I have no clue what to do or where to look but I do love music, Thanks again Glenn!

I honestly haven't seen a big difference in "power tubes" but I have noticed a difference using preamp tubes. There was a noticeable difference between EL34's and 6L6's. I had a recording dated from the early 2000's somewhere, don't know if I still have it, but it was using a modded ADA MP-1 with the 3TM mod done to it (for those who know), and using different preamps tubes on that unit, that was going into a Mesa 50/Fifty power amp into an older Marshall 1984B cab... cannot remember the speakers in it... but the preamp tubes did change the sound. And I have noticed this on amp tubes also, power tubes, not so much. I'll try finding that clip and sending it off to you...

Thanks for yet another interesting video, I've always called it "a wank handle". Anyway, moving onto this valve/tube business, my Dad was a radio and TV engineer back in the 70's and 80's when I was growing up and I vaguely remember helping him test valves on his Oscilloscope.
This gives a visual representation of the valves characteristics, I wonder if there is a way you could utilise this to demonstrate the fact that changing valves for different brands does/doesn't have any effect?
Also, perhaps include some equivalents including the more modern Soviet valves and newly manufactured valves vs N.O.S valves to see if there are any differences and how that would relate to an amplifier and where any (if any) different power characteristics were delivered.

Your channel and Jim Lil’s got my head out of my ass regarding guitar tone coming from the guitar itself.
Traded a lil cash and Peavy Vypyr 1 for a 6505+ 112 combo.
Got a HB JA-20HH just to tear it down and rebuild it as a project with my son. Tuners, bridge, and pickups. When I was 14 I never imagined taking a neck of a guitar for fear I’d ruin it.
Got a HB 2x12 V30 cabinet. Absolutely love it with the 6505.
Next project is finishing a 7 string kit, then build a 2x12 cabinet for DV-77 speakers.
Thanks for the great videos. It’s way more fun spreading the funds further for the guitar habit.

I think the biggest bang for the buck for many settings are the Harley Benton 4x12 mixed speaker cabs with the two of V30's/Greenbacks/Creambacks.
They're two different sounding 2x12 cabs in one box you can change between for the price of one 2x12 from a big name with poorer speakers.
