Found and bought this blindly without reviews and totally don’t regret it. I rarely if ever do that anymore and this reminds me of discovering games on your own as kid
I've been looking at some game-play and reviews online to see what people think about it, and I've gotta say yours has been the most thoughtful I've seen! I picked up Carrion on my Nintendo Switch a few days ago and completed it in two sessions across two days, and it was a short but sweet experience. One of the main complaints I've seen is about how short the game is - which is true, and the game could probably have benefited from being a bit longer - but I don't think it's that big of a deal When it comes to game length, I kinda feel like there's a false expectation/narrative because of AAA titles and similar BIG games that part of a game being good is it giving you hours upon hours of content and playtime, which just isn't always right? Content for the sake of content, padding out playtime, and unnecessarily dragging out a game is just quantity over quality. I think with a game like Carrion, it's length is honestly very fitting and works to it's advantage. With smaller scale or indie games it's not realistic for them to have a massive and lengthy amount of content, nor is it always necessary in delivering the experience, story, feeling, etc. that they want to give - so as a wider community and industry I think people need to remember that. Example: I have around three times as many hours spent on LoZ: BotW than I do on Hollow Knight. While my time spent with Hollow Knight isn't exactly short, I can say for sure that even though I love both games, it's the one I personally enjoyed more.
One could argue that Stubbs the Zombie is another example of a reverse horror game, in terms of how nightmarish the premise of that game is when you take into account the blood, gore, how monstrous Stubbs' methods are, how terrified the Punchbowl citizens are of Stubbs the Zombie, and the detail that Stubbs is literally a monster (in Stubbs' case, a zombie).
I remember seeing a couple youtubers play this a month and some change ago.. Same game.. but it wasnt as polished. No mech suits and a few other things.. It was a beta for this i think. Was a LOT different, in that it lacked SO much.. But i KNOW i saw this played a while ago in a similar but lesser form.
Thanks Gman! I only watched the intro, then stopped video and purchased the game - I don't want to spoil it for myself. Needed a game like this at this time. Cheers
Modding will bring some form of longevity to this. Myself and a few others pioneered making levels for the demo back when it first came out, there are a LOT of custom levels just for it; pretty hyped to see what comes next
I really love this game: it got EVERYTHING right for me... The animation is fluent and really smooth (the humans' movement reminds me of Out of This World or Prince of Persia NES), and playing as a Giant Carnage Symbiote is really cool
I’d also question if this is really a “Metroidvania.” Your world progression is pretty linear. It’s only the details that somewhat vary (for example, one world has 4 sub paths that ultimately loop back to the same location). But yes, a map system would still have helped.
Besides all the other well known monsterflicks of the 80's this reminds me of the The Being. That was like shoestring budget horror movie about a monster terrorizing a small town. It could turn it self into a goo of some sort and it was defeated by cyanide gas that was just laying around in some house in the town for some reason.
Pity that the devs had backtracked on demo after people were able to finish it without hurting anyone. Option and depth? Who needs that?!:D And in later parts size management becomes more of a chore then it needs to be.
Size management was not a problem for most of the later parts though. The latter part, if you have some skill at using the chittin ability, is fairly easy. The one problem I have with the game is the fact that it's too short to be honest. Though I do agree with the "Why can't we complete the game without killing anyone ?"
Looks like a fun time. You ever play DUSKERS? Watching this video it sent me back to playing that game. Getting immersed as a drone operator alone in space with nothing but derelict ships and Infestations abound.

Was playing this game a year ago before release, was just as fun back then. Glad to see it getting attention.
A nice four hour Movie monster game.
Nice.

when I read "reverse horror" idk why but the first thing that came in my mind is Doom
I agree, that applies. If you’re some kind of boogie man, it’s reverse horror.
It's fitting, really. Normal people would be scared in a scenario like the games, but the protagonist never is.
True, in Doom you play as the nightmare fuel
Doom is a Survival Horror game
Except You are the horror
doom is an action shooter with horror elements in the form of demons.
theres no reverse horror or survival aspect anywhere in it.
Found and bought this blindly without reviews and totally don’t regret it. I rarely if ever do that anymore and this reminds me of discovering games on your own as kid
There was a game on iPhone called "Perfect Cell" that have the same concept.
That was my first thought! Still have it installed on my phone!
Toriyama would like a word with them
I've been looking at some game-play and reviews online to see what people think about it, and I've gotta say yours has been the most thoughtful I've seen! I picked up Carrion on my Nintendo Switch a few days ago and completed it in two sessions across two days, and it was a short but sweet experience.
One of the main complaints I've seen is about how short the game is - which is true, and the game could probably have benefited from being a bit longer - but I don't think it's that big of a deal
When it comes to game length, I kinda feel like there's a false expectation/narrative because of AAA titles and similar BIG games that part of a game being good is it giving you hours upon hours of content and playtime, which just isn't always right?
The thing about the game only being played once is no longer around because of modded campaigns
For me it was never around I have replayed the base game two dozen times and every time it gets better
When you beat the game you can play the demo. That's probably what you are remembering.
Absolutely loving your recent opening-up to games outside the realm of the first-person. Great work as usual 🦾
mThe graphics immediately reminded me of Butcher, also great game. apparently yes, its made by the same people!
Thanks Gman! I only watched the intro, then stopped video and purchased the game - I don't want to spoil it for myself. Needed a game like this at this time. Cheers
Honestly, this game is amazing. I’m playing it right now, and I love it!
I appreciate you going out of your comfort zone of FPS to review this.
I think i'll pick this up
Terraria fans be like:
"Wall of Flesh : The Game"
I fucking love this game so much, reverse horror is so much fun when done right
When I saw this at E3, I was immediately hooked.
It was new and interesting in a sea of bland and unoriginal
Modding will bring some form of longevity to this. Myself and a few others pioneered making levels for the demo back when it first came out, there are a LOT of custom levels just for it; pretty hyped to see what comes next
"Kind of like your mum's webcam show." :D Jesus that made me laugh! :D
where
I really love this game: it got EVERYTHING right for me... The animation is fluent and really smooth (the humans' movement reminds me of Out of This World or Prince of Persia NES), and playing as a Giant Carnage Symbiote is really cool
0:59 I can confirm this is how I was born
I was not prepared for that ceiling fan lmao
I’d also question if this is really a “Metroidvania.”
Your world progression is pretty linear. It’s only the details that somewhat vary (for example, one world has 4 sub paths that ultimately loop back to the same location). But yes, a map system would still have helped.
I play this game so much and I adore it! I'm so glad that someone did a review on it shortly after it was released who shares the same views on it.
It was the "Safehouse for cyanide gas weapon to be used in event of attacks by goo-transforming extra-dimensional monsters..." reason.
Can't wait to pick this up. Preorder for physical copies go on sale at special reserve for the Switch later today.
This looks like it could be in the same engine Noita has.
Oh man, I hope there's some good opportunities for mods with this one.
Was absolutely thinking "Noita" while viewing this...it looks terrific.
Dude this is one of your best-written reviews yet!
Carrion my wayward son
They'll be pieces when you're done
I finished it yesterday. Great concept, love the horror.
This is what I imagine happens during a woman's period.
Playing this game as we speak. I’m absolutely loving the gameplay//feel//look of everything
On Pc? I cant download on steam yet
Fabian Meusel I downloaded it on PC Xbox game pass. It released at like 9pm on release date tho which is fairly odd
Wasnt doom eternal reverse horror?
I’ve waited a while for this, and man am I excited to play this.

@@barry63196 You don't have any argument to explain why you act so rude to weebs. What would you say to make me understand your hate ? That we just like animes and that's a good reason to hate ? Stop doing that for no reasons, I will not insult you 'cause I'm more human than you think I am. There's no need for me to do that just because someone insulted a way of thinking. Wait, Is GGGman reviewing a side scroller? Very Good.
The only other ones I can think of him doing are Duke 1 and 2.
While I loved the game, the thing I missed the most in Carrion was some more character to the humans. When playing Arkham Asylum I loved how the thugs would get more and more panicked as I picked them off, something similar to this would really make Carrion shine.
I was just recommending this game too my friends the other night! Glad you found it
That Mom joke made my drink come out my nose, GG man gg good stuff.
