Theme idea: "build an OOTD (outfit of the day)"; so a search for a sweater/t-shirt/too, pant, sock, hat, accessory, etc? And eventually see what crazy result your OOTD will be !
Love this series! I don’t think any of us would consider it cheating the randomness if you searched terms ahead of recording just to check what gets the most relevant hits so when you do the number generator on camera, we’re more likely to see the theme.
There was a designer who was creating shawl designs based on various book series, such as those by Tamora Pierce and Kevin Hearne. Since his passing, his family has made his patterns free. MMario. Wish I'd known him since we had similar taste in books - Kevin Hearne and I have even chatted online a little (he's a good dude)
Me too! I've had the Dynomite intarsia sweater by Amy Gunderson on my favorites list for a while, but I am sure there are other incredible options out there!
With fall coming.... Spooky, Halloween, Autumn, Pumpkin, cozy. Regardless, these episodes are always entertaining and feel like we are just all hanging out doing an activity together over coffee.
Love these roulette sessions❤ my inspo for RR, which can be hilarious, is to use a 'random word generator' or 'word of the day' and go with wherever that takes you 😂
I think one reason for the results this time might be that you left the "sort by" area as "best match" instead of random (at least in the latter searches). So for example, if there's a 10 page result, it could be that all the patterns going into the direction you had in mind are crowded in the say first 3 pages. In that situation, the page number the generator sends you to already decides how satisfying the result will be.
I gasped at that dino knits book!! I have this mohair yarn that I've been trying to figure out what to do with and I know I want it to be a shawl and this is absolutely perfect!! Ravlery roulette win!
As a huge nerd who loves literature and fandom-based knitting patterns, it helps to search by specific terms! Like “Tolkien” or “Austen” or “Wheel of Time.” Even better is specific names from the books - I know a designer on Ravelry who made shawls for every Elvish season in LotR, if you use Elvish search terms
Yay! Ravelry Roulette is the best! Love these videos and watching your process as you search and share. You never know what will pop up! So original.. so clever.. thank you!!
Random number generators do not work like that, they are inclusive of the max and min values you select. Each individual page is equally likely to appear, it just seems like 1 never happens because thats a 1 out of ~500 chance. We dont put significance on the middling page numbers, so you're like 500x more likely to get a random middling page than you are to get page 1, but thats just how numbers work. You can check if a number generator is inclusive of the edge digits by just setting it to between 1 and 3, and seeing if you only ever get a 2. The commenter was possibly getting confused with how you have to format numbers when coding random number pickers, but that is not relevant to actual front end number pickers
So I’m no mathematician (😂) but when I read that previous comment, I wondered the same thing. I figured that if you select 1-50 you have a 1 in 50 chance of landing on any number. The buffer numbers weren’t necessary. However, when I filmed this, I remembered the suggestion to do the under/over and just went with it. You may be right in regard to the intention of the comment. There’s an excellent chance that I misunderstood. 🥴
Hi Tayler ! Loved this episode, I feel more knitting podcasts should include dinosaurs! 🦕 I know it's probably a little early, but you mentioned you're an autumn lover, as am I, and I would love a Ravelry roulette episode on Halloweeny knitting patterns! I have a board on Ravelry for gothic knitting but I need to expand my Halloween specific choices I feel
I love Raverly roulette. How about tools or trains. My daughter always wanted me to make something with tool or trains for her dad. I have some patterns but those I found were from 30 years ago so I’d love to see what’s out there now. 💕. Iris
Loved land before time. Even tried to share it with the kids. My idea is plants. I love knitting the trembling Aspen Shawl. Would love to have other plant inspired shawls.
Ooo I love a plants-inspired search! And I chuckled when I read “tried to share it with the kids”. I had the same experience. I tried, but they just didn’t love it like I did. 🙄
Coffee! because all my Fall ideas were already mentioned! This was a fun one. The last pattern was a funny coincidence bc we saw one of those dinosaurs at our local zoo yesterday 😁
Perhaps putting books as the search, you ended up getting books of patterns. Literature inspired? Or inspired by books? As usual, a fun video and your ideas are making me smile!
I feel like maybe there were other words that would have got more of the results you were looking for? Character, Literature, Literary, Story, Legend, Novel, Fiction..... I wanna go try a few of these 😆 But in other news, I looked for Bibliophile 2 to see if the larger sizes had been revised yet and the designer replied that there's going to be a tester call on the revised version very soon! ❤
It's fine. It's all fine. 😂 I love when a WNH -RR episode goes off the rails! How about using a random word generator to get your random search term(s)?
Hi Tayler, fun ravelry roulette episode. Me thinks perhaps improved success in finding knits connected to books would be to use a particular book series like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Star Wars? Star Trek?
Loved this, it's one of my favorite formats that you do! Ideas for next time-- What if you limit your search to a specific number of pages, like the first two thirds, so you can eliminate some of the nonsensical stuff in the back pages. For example, if there are six hundred pages only generate a number better 0-401. I agree with you that I would love to see more knitting patterns. Ideas for search terms-- I thought literature would be good for book patterns, but other ideas would be 'historical,' 'futuristic,' maybe seasons? 'Autumn' would be very prescient! I would also love to see some construction techniques you're interested in! I love narrowing things down just by, for instance, entrelac, dolman sleeves, or cables. So much fun to watch!
Love playing Ravelry roulette!❤ I say , try “lace” or if you want to be more custom something general like “free patterns “ or randomly scroll through the top patterns in ravelry or the “oldest “ Again love the podcast ❤and happy knitting 🧶 to you.
You are too funny all your excitement over dinosaurs and heading down the rabbit trail like I do when finding cool stuff and click and oooohhhh and click and more oooohhh lol
I haven't finished this episode yet but I'm working on Fabel Knitwear's Bibliotek Blouse as I'm listening, which feels fairly relevant! It's inspired by Belle from Beauty and the Beast, if I remember correctly. It's fitted, with gorgeous puff shoulders, and I'm really excited :)
Wait, who told you that about the random number generator? If it’s really a random number genre then every number is equally as likely to be drawn regardless of what order it is in….. if it was between 1 and 10 then every number has a 1/10 chances of being drawn. What you’re saying would be true if you are using a normal distribution but this google generator is using a uniform distribution. So all numbers are equally as likely to be selected.
Yeah, I thought the same thing when I read the comment, but figured I’m no mathematician. Even when I thought to entertain the notion in the video, it didn’t seem right. 🥴 I may have misinterpreted their meaning. On the next episode, I’ll clarify this. 👍
I forbade myself from doing any more internet sign ups years ago so I'm out of luck with ravelry. It's the public library for me! I can still access ravelry patterns through direct links
Speaking of a baby sweater being a good place to try new techniques, I've been working through "The Sampler" gansey pattern by Beth Brown-Reinsel. I got her book because I was interested in learning about ganseys, and maybe trying one (I was inspired by her pattern on Ravelry: Susan's Eriskay Gansey). So the Sampler is a teddy bear sized sweater, but I'm learning all the techniques I'll need to make my size without all the time investment to see if I really want to commit. And now I do want to commit!
Check out “Tyrannosaurus was a Beast” by Jack Prelutsky for great, young elementary poetry about dinosaurs ❤ I still remember the one about ankylosaurus and my kids are in their late 20s 🦖✨
Hubby’s fave is a therizinosaurus (crazy long claws they used for digging like aardvarks!). Mine will always be triceratops, but carnotaurus is another favorite. Our (adult) friend owns a store that specializes in dino stuff, and he illustrates a bunch of them. Dinos are awesome!
Fun to spend time with a crazy RR. I have a fave book related pattern you might like: Flat Rat by Susan Glinert Stevens. Check it out if you have a moment.
It ends with dinosaurs. 🦖 😉
Theme idea: "build an OOTD (outfit of the day)"; so a search for a sweater/t-shirt/too, pant, sock, hat, accessory, etc? And eventually see what crazy result your OOTD will be !
Do you mind if I do this idea as a video? It’s genius!
Since Autumn is just around the corner for many of us, I'd recommend "leaf" or "leaves" for a future Ravelry Roulette!
Love this series! I don’t think any of us would consider it cheating the randomness if you searched terms ahead of recording just to check what gets the most relevant hits so when you do the number generator on camera, we’re more likely to see the theme.

We definitely need a dinosaur themed search!
I now crave a color work sweater with dinosaurs
Me too! I've had the Dynomite intarsia sweater by Amy Gunderson on my favorites list for a while, but I am sure there are other incredible options out there!
@@CatyDid629 Dino-RAWR caught my eye
This made me look up 'bookish' and so many cute patterns showed up
With fall coming.... Spooky, Halloween, Autumn, Pumpkin, cozy. Regardless, these episodes are always entertaining and feel like we are just all hanging out doing an activity together over coffee.
Omg I showed up on the bibliophile sweater projects page lol 😆
Oh cool!!
Love these roulette sessions❤ my inspo for RR, which can be hilarious, is to use a 'random word generator' or 'word of the day' and go with wherever that takes you 😂
I love these Ravelry Roulettes, they are always so fun and inspiring. Would love to see more bird or animal related searches. Thank you, Tayler!
Every time I watch one of these I see a random pattern as you scroll by that I want lmao!! The Luminos Tee right at the beginning?! Gorgeous 😍
I think one reason for the results this time might be that you left the "sort by" area as "best match" instead of random (at least in the latter searches).

Paper, cloud, fields, forest, - leaf is Huge! Thank you. Love Rav Roul!!
Hilarious. That was so chaotic! I find that women's names often result in a lot of good choices. Also flowers.
There is always a National “whatever” day. Might get interesting results and many have multiple celebrations

love it when you go off script just one more. 😊
Petrie: Did I flied?
Ducky: No, you falled.
I love Land Before Time.
“You should not eat talking trees. Nope nope nope.” 😌
I love When you do the random patterns. So fun to see what comes up

Can we get a search on fun dinosaur patterns? I'm OBSESSED.
Library might be a good keyword too
A série of RR presenting patterns by regions or countries. That kind of theme should lead us to discover great yarns 😊
Love all your podcasts! Try flying or airplane or clouds. Yes, I'm a pilot.
Maybe you could pick a random book or author? Tolkien or the Hobbit or LOTR for example. I’m sure you will find some cool results. ❤
Could have done dark academia for a bookish theme 😊 loved the sweater and the dino shawl ❤
Loved land before time. Even tried to share it with the kids.

I love your roulette videos! 🤩. And that booklover fox is really something for Jana from @FinnishKnittingStories
Coffee! because all my Fall ideas were already mentioned! This was a fun one. The last pattern was a funny coincidence bc we saw one of those dinosaurs at our local zoo yesterday 😁
The baby sweater gave me Dalek vibes. There are Doctor Who books so it counts.
I think you'd need to look by specific book to find much. Maybe you could do a roundup video where you find some inspired by books you love
You got the popcorn sweater because it's "Read Street" designs. 😅
Perhaps putting books as the search, you ended up getting books of patterns. Literature inspired? Or inspired by books?
As usual, a fun video and your ideas are making me smile!
I LOVE Ravelry Roulette! And beautiful choice of music in the end, by the way. I listened to the very end, because I like it so much 😊

Ooo yes! I love that. I wonder what sort of shenanigans we can get up to??
I have the Bookshelf Sweater by Tomomi Yoshimoto in my Ravelry queue - it has books on it 📚🙂
Hi Tayler, fun ravelry roulette episode. Me thinks perhaps improved success in finding knits connected to books would be to use a particular book series like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings? Star Wars? Star Trek?

I would love to see an INTARSIA roulette!!
I think you get better results if you sort patterns by “ random order” instead of Best match, as you did in previous episodes.
I'm in for Fall
Have you heard the expression that "a sweater is something you wear when your mother's cold". The baby sweater is made by Read Street Knitting.
This expression makes perfect sense!
Possible themes could be : Bohemian, vintage, each inspired or fall inspired.
Do an all dinosaur one! As we go into fall “Halloween” or “pumpkin” I’m also in the camping vibe “mountain” “woods” or “hiking”
Best ending! Land before time ❤

Fun!
Lots of shawls named after Jane Austen’s characters eg the Miss Bennett Wrap, leading to the Miss Woodhouse shawl…
Back to school could be a theme?
You could try bookmark as your word instead of just book 😊
Maybe try something like 'inspired by books' or 'book inspired'
To be honest dinosaurs would be a fascinating one.
Do something cozy, since fall is coming up.❤
Fun time seeing what comes up. How about “joy” “strength” “ art”. I’m having fun just thinking of things to put in!
We just returned from a trip to Scotland. How about a search of “castle”?
I was going to do projects based on song lyrics, think Raspberry Beret. That's as far as I got!😂
Love it though!
About an idea for a topic search? Holiday house items… Not wearables.
I've seen sock patterns that are themed off of Wheel of Time characters.

Halloween!
If you went to pattern source type book, magazine, etc but if you want certain book that inspired knit or crochet you’d have to plug itin
I searched and found a whole book called literary knits. Maybe that term would show more results.

word prompts I'd love to see
halloween
horses
frogs
fairys
Try to use "inspired in books"
How about "textured"?
Purple Rain
Do something Prince inspired.
YES!
Maybe we need to do dinosaurs 😂
I was wondering if “inspired by” would have pulled up something 🤷♀️
Jane Austen!
Crochet cat stitch
Maybe use the word “stories”
Another book pattern: Paperback Rider, a felted purse by Stephanie Stock, Knitters Magazine No. 83. (No dinosaurs 🦖🦕 involved!)

How about teachers. 😊

Girl. TABS!!! one tab for # of pages, 1 tab for 1 to 48.
Yes yes. I know. Tabs. I GET it. But where’s the fun in that? Who doesn’t want to just restart their entire search from time to time. 🥴😂😉
