I love my small-box German Oink Games version of Modern Art! It's a tiny box but they still managed to include an easel.

Thanks for this. Knizia is probably my favorite designer. And I have to say: the "lightning round" at the end was a hoot.
This video made me realize that a) realize who he is b) realize I’ve played more of his games than I thought c) made me start seeing his games EVERYWHERE and d) already bought three of them and am eyeing a bunch more. Thank you for doing this video (and podcast episode) highlighting his games!
Was the 697 going live any minute now a troll for those of us still waiting on the Arkham Horror LCG part 2?
Samurai is another of his tile laying games I highly recommend! It’s a rare pure area majority game with no point scoring. You’re trying to score the most of 3 types of statues. If you win 2/3 of these majorities you instantly win, but there’s a fun tie-breaker if there’s no clear winner where, like a proto-T&E, you add the sum total of the *other* statues that you did not win majorities in to decide who wins!
When the rules of Babylonia were explained I thought it had a lot of Samurai DNA, in that in Samurai you score a city when it is completely surrounded, and you compete for strength majorities surrounding that city so that you're the one who grabs the flavourful point token hat or buddha or rice bale.
Samurai is great and although I originally thought that Babylonia would be closest to that, the path building separates them enough that I happily own both.
There was one notable absence of a great RK game, and that is Samurai of course! One of my favourites, along with through the desert!
Especially when talking about Babylonia. It seems to take more from Samurai than the other two 'lines' of games
Samurai was one of my first intros to board games outside of the Monopoly Bullshit Zone and it's fantastic.
@@cold1ava Agreed, I haven't played a ton of Knizia games, but Samurai is among them and I really recognized that DNA in Babylonia.
Whilst all these games are certainly great, my favourite of the games left out is High Society, a very cheap and very tiny buy also very great auction game
Videos like this are why TH-cam needs the ability to like a video multiple times. The jokes, the reviews, the lightning round. All are amazing work from this duo!
Of course, in Modern Art you never want to end the round with a Double Auction, because that will prevent you from getting money for one or both of the paintings (as the 5th painting that ends the round is never auctioned; another delightful Knizia wrinkle).

Oh man. You sell Babylonia short. It’s quite possibly the very best of Knizia’s tile-layers. It’s damned magnificent and in no way a consolation prize for the others being hard to find.

Note that later printings of DiceTree version does not include the Korean arts. Those are sold separately now.
Also, DiceTree version of Ra was released in Korea few month ago and will be released internationally at Essen 2022. (The edition mentioned by Efka is 25th Century edtition with Ian O'Tooole art)
Great job - modern art is one of my favorites. My other two favorites are actually Medici (the original game) and high society is also a great short game of his that works great.

We loved My City so much at 3P that we will be buying it again and playing again. Once Delta has burned out. We just let everyone take as much time as they needed each turn though-not a problem at all.
As soon as the Efka started opening the boxes is when the disaster started.
Efka's seductive head-nodding has me hypnotized, I've rewatched the opening at least 5 times now. am I the only one ?

I thought the "Yoko" in the old Modern Art is just a name they invented, attached to a Roy Lichtenstein pastiche.
Ah, this is really bad on our part because one of us misremembered it being singed at the botton as Yoko Ono whereas that is evidently not the case.
@@NoPunIncluded To be honest, for several years (after playing the card game version), I thought it was Yoko Ono until I looked into it. She's multi-talented!
What was the original theme of Royal Visit?
Does anyone have a take on "Loot"? I got it, played a couple of times, and would have very happily played it the rest of the entire day. It was so simple, and so good. It doesn't ever get talked about, though.
Great video and gags, but it was the worst explanation of Babylonia that I've ever seen ;) - you totally forgot to include the tension that comes from scoring the previously acquired cities by all players as soon as the new city is scored so that you have incentive to have majority early AND to have long chains. AND you want the ziggurat special powers as early as possible as well. Obviously, I'm a fan. :)

I have only played two of his games: Lost City and High Society. Fun games and wouldn't mind playing more, but I have a hard time seeking them out.
If you recognize the vintage SUSD reference in the opening shot, then you probably have crippling anxiety.

I've only just started watching this, but obviously though Reiner Knizia has designed x00 plus general games (really 700 now?) only so-many of them will be board or card games or indeed entirely unique products. The full total will include games within periodicals, mathy and puzzly dice games and plenty of his 're-takes' of out-of-print older games of course. I'd love to hear a ball-park figure for all the reasonably-defined 'original' games by him. Does anyone have one?
Impressionism is modern art, modern art starts around 1864 and ends around 1970

My dad has tao copies of… neither of which are the two versions you have. I didnt realize there were so many versions.
Stephensons Rocket is horrible to explain, and a little more dry than his other games (which sounds impossible, but I don't make the rules), but an absolute delight to play! So many shared incentive systems going on like in any good train game, and its quite fun to just crash trains into each other.
So when's the Arkham Horror LCG part II coming out?!

I've heard that the newest printing of Babylonia has better token holders? Can someone confirm?
Can confirm: Babylonia is printed.
I purchased a copy last year (December 2020), and the issue had been addressed already. They made the holders much thicker.
“Knyaz” is not a knight in Russian, it’s more like “King” or “Prince”.
Maybe the japanese stamp Modern Art is slightly out of budget, but the Oink Games Modern Art looks cute!
My most played Reiner Knizia game is Pickomino. 😳
Not trying to be pedantic, but anything following Edouard Manet (~1860s) is considered modern art, especially Impressionism and the other examples on the box.
What do you think of the Oink version of Modern Art?
It's a perfectly great version. I do love that it features art from a collective that promotes disabled artists.

I think it depends on what you prefer. Babylonia is faster and a touch more point-salady. Yellow & Yangtze is more methodical.
I can't decide if Reiner Knizia or Klaus Teuber has a better name...

I bought Modern Art the Cmon edition...The Card Game version. I am super bummed since I bought it from a local shop. It looks really really lame. With that being said, I just bought the original because f'it. I want it.

Knyaz doesn't equal to a knight, it's more of a duke level title, quite a bit higher than a knight.
I want to see a parallel universe where tetris doesn’t exist but my city does and see how people react to the use of the S piece and whether the lack of the opposite piece would really be a problem.
Князь means a prince not a knight.

Yes. That's what the example implies.
@@NoPunIncluded I rewatched it, and it was said that the round ends when five paintings are sold, but the example that immediately follows it implies the rules as I know them. Not a big deal, I was just wondering if I had maybe misread the rules.

The thing that bothers me about modern art is it makes people devalue modern art
I have an ancient iPhone 3 that I've kept, even though I switched to Android phones 12 years ago. I keep it because I have some Knizia games on it that were never available for android, nor are they available for IOS (I'd buy an ipad solely to run Knizia games if the games were available!).
Games like: Keltis, Medici, Money, Poison, Ingenious, T&E, Through the Desert, Samurai, High Society, Taj Mahal, Battleline, Ra, Whoowasit?, Labyrinth, Topas, and Skyline.
I bet I played >500 games EACH of Keltis (and Keltis: Oracle), Medici, Money, Ingenious, and Poison. I probably have only played 500 games total of all the others combined (I'm not a fan of a couple of them like Whoowasit?, Labyrinth, or Skyline, and Medici I love the app but not a fan of the board game). If even a couple of those games I love so much were available today, I would buy whatever piece of hardware (tablet or phone) necessary to run them!
Alas, for whatever reason there were a lot of Knizia's games available 10+ years ago, now days there are less, and they tend to be the "heavier" games, whereas I really enjoyed the
