Just bought my first welder and am embarking on the fixing of a in quite okay shape 1978 Fiat 132. the way you show the process of stripping shaping and welding has been really helpful. Thank you.
I bought a used FIAT 131 in the 1980s. My brother and I spent a ton of time welding in metal panels. The car was so damn rusted it was unbelievable. The car was a beauty though; great engine and very nice interior.
Ryan.... this is painful to watch so can imagine what it’s like there. Working on a 240z at the moment and took the plunge and got a rotisserie. Man it’s life-changing. Take a weekend and build one and you’ll never look back. This project really needs one. Plus it would be a nice project to film for others thinking about making one. Otherwise you are doing a sterling job. Chin up... and crack on!
Im working on my Opel Kadett -77 and made a rotisseries out of two cheap engine -stands, works great and really makes work easier and more comfortable when working on difficult spots.
I was just lost for words when cutting it out! We have a Rotisserie waiting to be assembled :) I just need to finish the structural repairs first then I can mount it and get better access :)
This car has so much rust, it looks like it has been sitting on the bottom of the sea for years! This is the craziest restoration project I've come across on TH-cam, keep it up !
Learnt a trick off a posh German car-body builder - been using it all week & it works. Instead of cardboard he grabs a sheet of plain A4 paper, holds it in place with small magnets (I've been using little neodymium ones) & traces the ope with a dirty finger. (I always have a dirty finger to hand). That gives a REALLY precise template, cut it out with scissors & then bang onto the fresh sheet steel with the magnets - cut out, voila, precision fit panel. Far more accurate than cardboard & far easier to do. Works great for holes big & small. :-)
Good idea that, we have used paper before but we dont usually have it to hand. But very good for the smaller repairs where the paper fits, and like you say, it is more accurate!!!
This is like an archaeological examination of car repair standards of the past 40 years. The evolution of car repairs and how things have improved and acceptable standards have changed significantly, each layer is a piece of automotive repair history. The majority of that would have been stick welded or oxy acetylene. No signs of any brazing so far.
Yep you are right, it does show the evolution of previous repairs! We are keeping the bits chopped out as a reference to how bad it really was! We get some bracing in the next video :) Thanks!
Fair dues. Anyone else would have given up on it ages ago. I’m restoring a Citroen 2cv van at the minute, so familiar with tinworm but serving my apprenticeship (very badly) in patching and welding.
I had a 1977 Datsun 280Z, everything was great until the rust started, it rusted out so fast even after stripping down and repainting the rust started again two years later. These cars are the biggest rust buckets ever made. I finally had the second round of rust repaired and got rid of that rust bucket.
I've restored a few classics that came from the US. The things they did... 😂 : Pop riveting with bondo over rust, concrete filled doors, chassis rails repaired with polyester lol.. i saw it all.
@@yorkshirecarrestoration yeah.. the most common thing i saw was pop riveted plate over holes in the floor. Also a chassis that was held together from breaking with a piece of angle iron profile

Wow that sill is bad, my personal disaster datsun had similar layer of bad in the foot well only. I pulled the entire floor plan, minus the tunel but was able to leave all seat cross members.
Yep, the sill is just about gone! Good thing that yours was only on the floor! A did try to just take the floor out and leave the cross members but the sills were just too bad!
If you add aluminium to all that rust, you may inadvertently make Thermite. That may be a fitting result for this car!! TBH Ryan, yours and Rocco’s dedication to sorting this car out is phenomenal. Hats off to you Sir, Well Done. I don’t think they actually repaired the car, they just welded over it to hide the problem.
Absolutely. The original part started rotting and no one bothered cutting anything out, just plated over the top to get the car through another MOT. And by the looks of it they just grabbed some flat sheet and hammered it around the part they wanted to repair rather than shaped the piece on the bench.

They've repaired so much on this car they're well past the point of no return. The entire offside and most of the engine bay area are done. Since they're creating most of the panels themselves it's not even really a matter of money, just time and energy.

i mean the question everyone wants to know is it really worth it and how much is this costing? any car with hidden repairs can never be rust protected properly so is it just going to rust again in 5 years. i'm glad we don't salt our roads.
Disaster Datsun, automobile, A car barely complete. “Ryan, you can rebuild it. You have the technology. You have the capability to make the first Wonderryan Datsun. Disaster Datsun will be that car. Better than it was before. Better…stronger…rust free.”
@@Omegaman1969 Ah Very nice! I actually have 2 of them. Both coupes, both 1968 and 1 is a mk1 and 1 a mk 2. The one you see is the mk1 which I've done a lot of work on over the years. The mk2 is in very bad shape, but we wont get to that any time soon.
I honestly don’t know your line.. That is that the amount of work required is Beyond Economic Repair & that materials and man-hours are a higher costing than the return of the sale of the car. OR there is no line, it’s about returning the car to its former glory and about the car itself. The satisfaction of getting a disaster passed its MOT and making it last for another 20+ years.
If you can make a decent looking and safe car out of this load of oxide then almost anything is possible. How many replacement panels do you have, or are available, and how much are you going to have to fabricate from scratch ? There's not a lot there to use as patterns is there.
Correct! We are trying to show that anything is indeed possible! We have a couple replacement panels but most of it has/ will be done by hand fabbing mew panels. but there isn't must to go off no

A short one the tat you have on your right forearm Steve does it make it BIONIC?
I was hoping it would :)
Ryan I feel ure pain I've working on a e type jaguar which is like puff pastry and the welding looks bird s##t .why do people do this?
Ahh nice! An e type :) it's crazy isn't it. Puff pastry describes it perfectly!! And why on earth do people do it I have bo idea!!
@@yorkshirecarrestoration I used to like e types this is the third one I've welded i won't be doing another.
Fair play to you, we had one in recently no welding work needed though
Keep up the good work Ryan.Patience of a saint 😂
Thank you so much!
Just when you think it can’t get any worse……….
It definitely got worse! haha! It was grim!
Is that an S800 in front of the Suzuki ?
Indeed it is :) That will be on the channel once the Suzuki is done (hopefully) :)
just think how much faster this car will be without all the extra metal.
it will add at least 35 BHP to the car!!! It will certainly be a lot lighter!
i mean the question everyone wants to know is it really worth it and how much is this costing? any car with hidden repairs can never be rust protected properly so is it just going to rust again in 5 years. i'm glad we don't salt our roads.
lots of hidden repairs, but will be worth it in the end
Keep going Ryan ✊️
We are getting there slowly! :)
I think you need a bottle of rust-stopper😂, and something for your nerves😆😁
You are right :D
Must have my daily fix of rust yes this is rustopia
Welcome! Haha. Its bad isn't it!
How did this mess pass MOT?
Good question!
Saved the best for last😅
Haha yes! We still have the sill, rear arch and rear panel to sort yet :)
Im glad that i didnt buy one, the amount of work required on these is unreal.
Yep, This one must have been stored at the bottom of the sea
Proper Yorkshire grit, I would have cut the bastard thing up with a skill saw , lobbed it in a skip and looked for a better one stateside
Disaster Datsun, automobile, A car barely complete.
“Ryan, you can rebuild it. You have the technology. You have the capability to make the first Wonderryan Datsun. Disaster Datsun will be that car. Better than it was before. Better…stronger…rust free.”
What year this car?)
OOOoooo Honda S800
Yep! Thank should come on to the channel after the LJ80 is done! (hopefully)
@@yorkshirecarrestoration Cool, I’ll have to send a link to my brother when you do, he has an S800 cabrio.
Let me guess. Someone stuffed newspaper into rot holes and filler on top to make the holes disappear?
That's what we think yes
Alright, place your bets on how much “original” metal will be left when the Datsun is finished. I’m wagering 25%…..
I was thinking "25-30%" earlier.
25% Seems accurate! haha!
If you just painted the whole car in a rust colour you'd not be far off.
Amazing job that you've nearly rebuilt the car 😜
Great job 👌
That sounds like a good idea :D And yes, 95% will be hand fabricated by us! haha Thanks!
....and I thought that open heart surgery was intricate....!! 👏 👏 👏
What's left of the original car, 5%?
If you had known at the start how bad it would be would you have bothered?
5% Seems accurate. And yes, no matter how bad it is, we would have always continued :D
We have a couple replacement panels but most of it has/ will be done by hand fabbing mew panels. but there isn't must to go off no
@@yorkshirecarrestoration You'll have to buy another one for reference 😂
Haha :D
These guys are car artists.
Thank you!! :)
Well that was erm very short! But the carnage was epic nice to see a quality repair at the end pmsl😂
Thanks for stopping by Paul! And it was a shorter one yes, we do need longer vids :). Glad you enjoyed the repair at the end:)
Admire your persistence but there isn’t much of the original car left
Was this thing in salt water for a couple of decades?
It definitely seems that way!
Have you ever thought of changing your name to Percy? Yes I think that we should start calling you Percy Verence. Have you realised that there is currently metal on the Titanic that’s in better condition than your Datsun?
haha yess go for it!!! And yes! I can believe it!
Well Ryan it’s either a new way to rustproof it ( pickle it) - or you have practiced enough. have you decided how much wood you are going to put it on OUTSIDE!
Haha yeah!!! But Disaster doesn't quite describe it!!! And we need lots of wood to cover the rustyness up 😅😅
I think I’d want a roll cage in that car for some structural rigidity
Needs more than a roll cage :D
This can't be worth doing.
Still gonna do it :)
🤗🤗🤗
We are getting there!
