    Claire Foy understandably got all the attention and won all the awards but the actor who plays Tommy Lassells is incredible - he steals every scene he’s in.

      Pip Torren who plays Tommy Lascelles is priceless,(hope I spelled that correctly, don’t want spelling police to come down on me), I love every scene he’s in. When he says tick, tick, tick….i love it. To me he is a star and he does steal every scene he’s in. I also love when he tells Elizabeth all about her uncle and how her uncle was willing to have them bombed during WW11 and all Edward V111 ‘s dirty doings. He is so deadpan. I LOVE IT. 🥰🥰♥️🇺🇸🇺🇸

      Once she got a taste of power, her thirst was unquenchable. A true narcissist. She really thought that she would continue to be the power behind the throne like she was with her husband King George VI. Infuriatingly, Prince Philip also expected to fill that role. Little wonder the two of them butted heads so much.

    Her mother should have disagreed with her in private. She undermined the queen and reinforced the ‘too young with little experience’ perception. I’ sure she appreciates her mother’s council, and perhaps Elizabeth should have sought it out prior to the meeting, but the Queen Mother still should have voiced her concerns privately.

      The Queen Mother, the dowager Queen, should’ve kept her mouth shut, period. Shouldn’t even have been present for that meeting. QEII needed to establish authority over all those men and all her mother did was seduce them to do HER bidding. Which failed, btw.

      Well, the queen mother was a self-centered snob with a chip on her shoulder. Early on, she refused to move out of Buckingham Palace until Churchill told her she had to leave. there was never a queen mother before her - - she made up the title. If my memories correct, she also felt her blood lines were more royal than the actual royal families

      Yeah and she was the Queen before and had experience whereas the new Queen had zero. Her older version of herself would have understood perfectly. Head of state is not a hobby and decisions affect many people. Decisions are not to be taken based on personal whims or self created entitlememt. You might argue the Duke of Norfolk was entitled too but the point is that the establishment had endorsed his role based on precedence.

      Tbh, the more you read and learn about it, it's quite likely that this was indeed the attitude in real life at the beginning of her reign. The Queen Mother was purported to have felt that her own reign was too short and viewed her daughters as nothing more than a continuation of her own. I have a feeling the Queen didn't really rule with her own opinions until after her mother died.

    Chief Butler of England? I died laughing at the ridiculousness of this charade of titles and characters in our country. Does the uk really want to be taken seriously as a country with something to offer or just third spear carrier in someone else's play? Themore i watch this the more convinced I am that we no longer need nor want a monarchy. They make the country a laughing stock

    • @MichaelJohnson-vi6eh
      @MichaelJohnson-vi6eh 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think they cover some of this later. HM finds out there is a chief daffodil wrangler and a royal purveyor of hats since the 18th century. As an American, I dont really have a dog in this hunt, but it is horrible here having a head of state who is guaranteed to be hated by 50% of the population. Having a head of state carefully isolated from politics sounds so relaxing.

    • @cenotemirror
      @cenotemirror 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@MichaelJohnson-vi6eh This, exactly. I think some of our friends in Britain don't always understand what it's like not having someone like the Sovereign to play a ceremonial role. As it is, in our system the President has to wear both hats, and it means a lot more work for them and less time to spend on the business of actually governing. And in a polarized climate, it means that the person addressing the nation in times of crisis or tragedy is the last person half the country wants to hear from.
      Tradition doesn't make you a laughingstock. The UK isn't a 'third spear carrier' because of the Monarchy, or immigrants, or the EU, or any of the other scapegoats. The UK has declined in importance because that is how history works: nations rise based on certain factors and strengths, then fade when those factors and strengths lessen or become less relevant. There is nothing to be done about it; if anything, be glad that it has been a very favorable fading that has retained your security and 1st world standard of living.

      Because they were all part of the old guard. Every one of them played a key role in the monarchy at the time of the abdication, and the abdication almost ended the monarchy. It was only the personal popularity of George VI and Elizabeth, the queen mother, that kept it going. And they dutifully followed orders from those around them knowing full well if they put a foot wrong, that could be the end of it all.
      None of them were prepared for Elizabeth to become queen when she did. She represented the new generation and they simply weren’t prepared. And truthfully, it wasn’t until the queen mother died that Elizabeth II was able to make a lot of changes.
