  • 4-Day Getaway - Day 3, Omeo to Tumut
Be flexible - well, we had to today because our plans kept changing. Staying at the Golden Age Hotel, we rocked downstairs at 7am for breakfast, only to discover they don’t do breakfast anymore - we just assumed they still do, so we popped across the road to the Crazy Cow Bakery.
It was then we discussed today’s route - the typical ‘head down Australia’s best road - the Omeo Highway’. However, I can’t believe it! We moved the discussion towards riding the great twisty road over to Benambra and doing the Benambra-Corryong Road - containing 75km of coarse gravel. Despite missing such a fun road, we had a real ball taking in the scenery and discovering the amazing mountainous area the twisty gravel road dissects.
This change also meant a full route recalculation, so after reaching the Murray Valley Hwy, we headed to Shelley Rd and were greeted with a sign - ‘Proceed with Caution, Road in Poor Condition’. Well, this was very misleading for our route; there was one piece of damage at the start of the twisties, then the whole twisty section was magnificent - absolutely enjoyed it. As expected, there was another sign repeating the message referring to the section after the twisties - the boring straight bit heading to Walwa. We don’t do this bit; we turn off on Guys Forrest Rd and do a dirt section past some farming properties joining back into the Murray River Rd.
Then it was over Granya - the 12km mountainous twisties didn’t disappoint - Whitey’s favourite road!
After lunch at the Tallangatta Bakery, we headed back to Lake Rd and bisected the Mt Granya-Jarvis Creek Plateau, offering some picturesque valley views. It was then back to the Murray River Rd, always an enjoyable ride, especially when the River is so full. Passing Jingellic, Jingellic Rd is a quality ride towards Tumbarumba.
This is where our next gamble really paid off - we rode one of the best roads in the entire area with literally no other vehicle on it!! From Taradale Road, then Wondalga Road, which turned into a sleeping beast. 40km of a perfect quality surface, undulating, twisty and amazing mountainous scenery, scooting through the forests where the logging trucks no doubt own during the week. But today was Sunday and we had the road to ourselves - a thrilling way to cap off a great day’s riding. We re-joined Batlow Rd (the road we aimed to avoid) at Wondalga, not far from the Snowy Mountain Hwy junction - just brilliant.

You make it easy to follow the route with all the info either displayed or communicated. I’m constantly pausing, going to maps to check where you are and then back to the ride. Omeo, Bright area has to be one of the best places to be for a few days of riding. Do you have your rides entered into a GPS or plan on the run?

We do the same, stop the video, get up close to the tv and try and read a blurry street sign. So we are trying to take the guess work out and name the roads. Longer rides we plan and map out on the GPS, but are open to winging it on the day based on the weather and other options.
