Hampstead and its amazing history

  • John Constable Grave, Dracula and Peter Pan - The cemetery at St. John at Hampstead is the final resting place of many famous people. The Llewelyn Davies brother were the ones who inspired J.M.Barrie to write Peter Pan and their family tomb is there along with John Constable who painted The Haywain. In Bram Stoker's Dracula Lucy is entombed here also.
Then you can walk up Church Row to see how a street might have looked in the 17th century as it hasn't changed!
Louis Patisserie - In the 60s Louis Permayer opened his Hungarian patisserie in Hampstead and it still retains its original features today and a lovely selection of cakes!
There are several nice pubs, my favourite being The Holly Bush, an old coaching inn.
Goldfinger - at number 2 Willow Road is Erno Goldfinger's house. He was an architect who didn't get on with his neighbour Ian Fleming who based his most famous James Bond villain on him!
You can even go inside as it's a museum.
Julian McDonnell takes you on a beautiful and nostalgic walk around this beautiful village including Flask Walk, Well Walk,Whitestone Pond
and all the places mentioned above which make a wonderful day trip from London.

Great stuff Joolz. You were standing outside the house owned by Peter Cook in Church Row. The East End Victorians called it 'Appy Ampstead' and then they walked down the hill to the Bull and Bush pub. You mention the water. Just past Whitestone Pond there is the Vale of Health where people in the 17th century went to escape the plague.

During the early days of WW2 I lived in Hampstead. On a Sunday morning my dad used to take me out for a walk while my mum got the dinner ready. Sometimes we would walk up to the whitestone pond, and very often the air raid siren would go off as we reached it. The siren itself was just across the road from the pond. We used to stand close to the siren and look out over London (the trees were much smaller then and we had a good view) and watch the bombers coming towards us. The nearest we got to the enemy planes was once when a Me110 swooped low over the vale of health.

I used to drink in Jack Straw's Castle in the 80s and 90s when it was a pub. It is now luxury flats. Opposite it and behind the war memorial, is Heath House, which from 1790 was the home of Sir Samuel Hoare, a wealthy Quaker banker, who was one of the prime campaigners for the abolition of slavery. William Wilberforce and Elizabeth Fry were often at Heath House.

Asq Fleur look up Alisa and Gabriel Dearman and the First Christ Church of Hampstead. There are dozens of hours of documented reports and greatly detailed testimonies from the young siblings of the abuse they endured by their father, their schools head mistress, local law authorities, amongst a large number of named others. You only didn’t hear of it because the mockingbird media was quick to cover it up and not well at all, mind you. The investigators never investigated the children’s claim of abuse and instead instantly partnered up with the accused head mistress to concoct a poorly enacted plan to demonize the mother of the children instead.

You mentioned Constable & failed, even though we see the sign, John Harrison. Without who's marine chronometers to derive the longitude the British navy would still be puttering about in channel

Regarding etymology, aren't Hampstead and Hampton named after hemp?....Which would have been grown to supply the Royal Navy with rope and sails?

i've been to London oh, perhaps 15 times and enjoyed every minute of it.
I think that Jools is very good at what he does. What he does is he " knows things".
I particularly like his choice of music, I always hear the refrain " cause I'm a Londoner" in my imagination....

Hello Julian, just catching up with this video which I somehow missed before. Did you notice (or has anyone pointed out) that behind the "real Peter Pan" grave was that of the famous actor Anton Walbrook, of "Life & Death of Colonel Blimp", "The Red Shoes", "Gaslight" etc?

12:42 "Chalybeate" is actually pronounced _ka-lib-i-ate..._ I would've pronounced it the same way myself, but I live in Tunbridge Wells which basically sprang up around a Chalybeate spring which was discovered in 1606. As a result of being a lot younger than other English towns, they don't have much history to shout about, so the Chalybeate spring is a pretty big deal and gets brought up a lot!

Oh cool! Thanks. That would be great. Just get in touch on the website. Croft Manor sounds interesting. Where is that? I think she also drives through Leadenhall Market at one point (which you can see in my Harry Potter video too).

Fenton House has a marvelous collection of old instruments, especially old keyboards. You can apply to play one of these old harpsichords or early pianos. There is also a beautiful walled garden behind the house, and as I recall a nice collection of beautiful dishes in every room

Do the locals have thoughts on the Hampstead kids that first accused their father of horrific crimes? I believe the testimony happened over days. I just can't fathom children being about to come up with all of those details on their own. And it reeks of a cover up.

ridiculous that there are council flats in hampstead. outrageous misuse of public money. people should pay for the privilege of living on the most expensive real estate in europe if they want to be there. cant believe lady thatcher allowed it to stand during her premiership
