    Am glad this was this weeks podcast… Feel it’s good timing (for me at least, and i’m sure others!). I’m so proud that you are able to talk openly about such subjects that others shy away from and have guests on that somewhat “devote” themselves to topics like suicide prevention and educating others about suicide itself, because as said, you’re not taught this in school or from a young age and so we need people to talk out about it and teach others and learn. Great episode 👍🏼

    I am an Afghanistan combat veteran and have seen suicide and mental health in a lot of my mates that I went over and returned with in 2010.
    This is a tough subject that we all need to be aware of. Unfortunately the government aren't helping and the mental health system is flawed. Education is the key. Great video, great topic and such an amazing guest.

    I belive the connection to these young footy players is the mentality. They feel like they have act like these marcho alpha males and alpha males don't share their feelings so they dont talk about it and it spirals. We put so much pressure on young people. And preasure with no outlet can make anyone ANYONE mentaly disordered.

    Never knew I had depression and anxiety until I started studying psychology and learnt the symptoms. I thought the way I had been thinking and feeling from 10 years old was just angst and thought everyone felt that way as a kid/teenager. It would have been great to learn about in school and get it sorted out before it's too late.

    I'm 24 and I've been struggling with depression and anxiety for most of my life. I had a suicide attempt at 16 which put me in hospital and then I saw a psychologist for a long time until I felt like it wasn't working for me anymore as it just kept re opening old wounds. After that I had another attempt and after that it was so hard to actually find help. A lot of people said no to seeing me. I mean even to see a psychologist is quite hard, you get a mental health plan from the doctors which can cover a certain amount of money for 7 sessions but it's not all covered, and if you're young and don't have a lot of money then you're fucked in that way.
    It's honestly not easy to find the right help and the right person to see. You definitely need a hell of a lot of motivation to pull yourself out of bed and get out there.
    This is such great video and fantastic awareness. Thank you for doing this :)

    back when I was in school my high school actually had 4 suicides in a period of 3 years, one was a friend & the youngest being in year 10 which was a shock! My school always swept it under the rug & they should of really addressed the situation & educate the school in suicide/depression & how to cope with it

    I honestly think there isn't enough the government is doing to cater towards the mental health of our students.
    schools should be having mandatory psychology classes, where they talk about human nature, and problems that might arise and how to overcome them, How to change your way of thinking, how to cope with emotions... etc
    We have sport days to keep our physical health in shape, What about the days we should be having to focus on our mental health and keeping it in shape aswell.

      Jayden 97 okay Elaborate on that please

    • @nelson850
      @nelson850 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jayden 97 Im talking about it being on the curriculums in every state, its not mandatory by the government. Just because your school and your friends school implented it doesn't mean a good majority of schools in australia are doing it, And also the classes need to be taught by well trained professionals in that mental health area, like pyschologist.

    • @nelson850
      @nelson850 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jayden 97 I didn't say they didn't have them, Im saying that's what these mental health classes need to be run by... Well qualified mental health specialists. And you said "they do have them in schools" yeah Not in the MAJORITY of schools. Because it is too expensive, Thats why the governemt needs to put more funding towards it.

  • @josieree
    @josieree 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Flummin hell Josh, got the tears flowing tonight. Mental illness fucking sucks. Being diagnosed two years ago with a disease that mimmicks a brain tumour, I quickly slid into the depression hole. Everyday I'm in agonising head pain sometimes I just wish it to end, the only thing that stops me are my three kids. If those little buggers didn't exist I wouldn't be here anymore. On top of that, one of the symptoms of my incurable disease is high functioning anxiety. I literally take my kids to school come home and hide away from the world until I get to go and get my kids again. I do that day in day out. I try so hard to be the best mum to the kiddos, I take them to parties and events, I may sneak off to vomit from the fear of people but I do it for my kids. It's fucking hard to live this life. Another thing I struggle with is telling people I have anxiety. How do I tell my little boys friends mum that I can't stay for a coffee because I'm scared I'm going to pass out or vomit. I feel like they will be judging me. Fuck this shit is hard.
    I was so scared to talk to my doctor about my anxiety and depression because I didn't want the truth of how I feel to reflect on my abilities to be a good mum. I was scared that someone would come and take my babies away from me. Ive been seeing a psychologist for a couple of years now, I still struggle it not improving if anything it's getting worse.
    Nine years ago I lost my cousin to suicide. He was having a hard time dealing with the suicide of his own dad. He'd been in a lot of trouble with the law and felt the only way to not go to jail was to kill himself. I'll never forget that day as long as I live. Seeing how broken my aunty was/still is just rips my heart out.

    I did my research project for year 12 on male suicide in Australia and I was honestly baffled by how schools and society do little to nothing about it. The rates are only increasing too especially for women. Thank you, Josh, for actually giving Australias biggest killer of young men the spotlight. This is why I love you brother

    Does anyone have advice for someone who has seen 5 different psychologists and 2 psychiatrists, have recently been told by the psychiatrist that I'm too sensitive to medication and to stop trying (taken roughly 6 or 7 different types of anti anxiety and depression medication over the last 4-5 years without positive effect). I have also had no progress with psychologists besides the last one and that person moved interstate so I am not sure if I want to go through another 4 bad ones before another good one at my current odds. Suicide ideation has been a problem for years. Should I just admit myself? Try another Psychiatrist? Psychologist? Getting rather sick of paying a psychologist that just gives me hand outs and template style counseling which is what i got from most of them.

    Hey Josh. id don't know if you even read these comments or not but I do hope that you see this.
    I don't know if many people can relate through here but I know in my personal experience and when I've talked to others who are wanting to commit suicide and when I ask people who have had there friend/s commit suicide there is always a key to most people. So I know through my depression, I go through a thing called hypervigilance, this is where you can almost see the minute things people do behaviously and emotionally and over analyse everything! But I think some have it and some don't? Anyway though myself and others would do this thing where we would "cry our for help" and in our own minds we are screaming and hiding behind a smile while we comment things like "I want to die" or "please kill me", and people seem very ok with that surprisingly. But it also includes things like putting the head down or being anti social, its just that they want to be noticed and because you can see these other people doing those behaviours (frown is for sad etc) and it works for them but never for yourself? You want to be noticed and cared for but you don't want to seem 'needy' or attention seeking and some people even get to the point of hurting themselves where others can see it and literally screaming for the help and attention!!!!! but still knowone ever takes them by the hand and tries to actually help them because they are being "attention seeking". and once you have done that enough you fall into the part of depression where you feel that knowone cares, obviously because knowone noticed you SCREAMING for help. (most of the time though its to small for others to even notice anyway) Its a fear that if you go to get help yourself that you are 'mentally stable' enough to do so, so then your not mentally ill? its makes no bloody sense but I know I feel that way. its a lot easier to blame someone instead of saying I WANT TO GET BETTER! the other part is that, for me anyway, when someone does want me its makes me feel worst because then I cant feel anything anyway, which makes me feel fucking useless so then I try not to show it because when I do open up I make others unhappy and I never want someone to feel like I do. for example my fiancé (who has never been mentally ill) is starting to become unstable in himself and I feel like I'm to blame for it as I do open up to him as much as I can but it never seems to help much anyway :/ so I think all and all, if you could ask now the people who have killed themselves why they did it, it would probably be the usual "knowone cared about me no matter how much I screamed".
    BTW I am in the middle of getting help and I am always open to talk about mental health issues and my own. I have been diagnosed before but it was wrong. its was a fucking tick and flick diagnosis from my doctor so I have severe depression, severe anxiety and severe stress disorders and she is surprised I can function. But I am now having to do my own research as she is useless in that way and I'm pretty sure having flash back nightmares and having panic attacks over walls that are similar to where I was assaulted is not a part of any of the diagnoses and I am 100% sure its a form of PTSD but my doctor wont get her figure out of her arse so I'm writing her an essay because I'm a bitch and would like the right treatment :)

  • @djccatterall
    @djccatterall 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    People do avoid you when you reach out about depression. Folk need to get educated. Perhaps they think they don't wanna be brought down. Just be genuine and say hi and ask if they are ok. It's surprising how different it can make you feel just bumping into a pleasant person these days. Worst thing you could do is avoid someone and don't go sending police around for a welfare check!
