as a 2nd generation old school master clock-smith who grew up learning about clocks (my earliest memories are me taking clocks apart and putting them together at 4yo) i wanted to thank you for your great videos. i have been wanting to do this myself but i'm an old fart and don't seem to ever get to making videos of clocks i restore and i have never videoed any of my many custom clocks i built in the past 50yrs. we used to make virtually all of our own tooling and i absolutely love your channel... makes me feel young again :-)

There is definitely A TON of people who would be interested in watching you! A lot of us 80/90s kids have realized we missed out on quality products due to mass production so we are drawn to content like this so we can learn what type of work goes into making special things.
@@davidt3563 absolutely as one of those 80/90’s kids, I can’t get enough of it, the pride and passion put into things you make by hand sparing no detail is just astounding, I am much of a beginner in this venture but I try and take my time with everything I do, but man Chris makes everything look perfect always
Ask a nearby youngster to help out! They don't have to be a pro! They just need to get what you do on film. Talk through the tricky bits perhaps, or just film the doing of them. Make a record of what you're doing. Youngsters are really clever at stuff, even with a crappy old phone! Seriously, mate, talk to a youngster - you'd be leaving a record and they'd be learning a few cool tricks, win win, right?
These parts are so beautiful and perfect that sometimes they seem like computer simulations rather than real pieces.

Seeing the amount of care you put into a simple spring is really inspiring - I'm an apprentice machinist largely though the inspiration of youtubers such as yourself and This Old Tony, I aspire to produce things this beautiful!

Chris, you are a huge inspiration and mostly responsible for my decision to finally dive in with the purchase of a mini-lathe. I made my first chips just yesterday and this kind of project gives me plenty to aspire to in the future. If only I could properly adjust these damn gibs 😅

Black Nickel finish would contrast beautifully with the bright polished parts. Chemicals are cheap, or ready kits. Reasonable safe for plating at home.

Man just made the most beautiful spring I've ever seen
Hey Chris love your work.
As I have told you on a couple of occasions I'm an aerospace engineer and one of my pet projects is: _"How do we actually build a Moon Base?"_ and the single biggest issue there is we simply can't afford the cost of flying everything there. As one person said many years ago we have to learn how to _"live off the land."_
Because its so insanely expensive and there's just not much in the way of cargo volume *FROM DAY 18 of the Moon Base we will have to make stuff on site and that means a work shop with the minimum amount of tooling. That's why there hasn't been a Moon Base. Its not a matter of can we get there. Its always been a problem of getting enough stuff there so we can _"Live off the land."_
The problem has been getting enough stuff there. Its not like a mine site where there's a semi-trailer with 100+ tons every other day.
The mega-super-T-Rex sixed problem has always been: _"How can we make stuff with a very limited amount of equipment?"_
There's no way I can take on of Joe Pie's lathes or mills. We wont even be able to take 1 of Stefan Gotteswinters small lathes or mills or any of the stuff This Old Tony, OxTools let alone Abom79's shaper because we just can't get it there.
*BUT WE CAN HAVE* something small like a Sherline. We just wont be able to have all the chucks and tools we will have to make do with maybe a 4 jaw and the arbor for a face plate. Insert tooling is out because it can't be resharpened. So initially it will be a lot of OLD SCHOOL techniques, *which is why I watch so many of these channels. They all give me ways of doing things and every so often they give me a piece of the puzzle.*
I can't say this is a specific solution to anything because its quite specialised and small. BUT its clearly a concept that allows for solutions. (I really look forward to you demonstrating it.*

Lately I rewatched your skeleton clock playlist. So when you did the rope knurl here I was completely blown away because it's so much cleaner and crisper and brighter in a way that caught me completely by surprise. It's probably the clearest visual example I've seen of how you've taken your machining to even higher standards over the last few years, because the contrast is so immediate. The whole thing is so elegant and pretty, I know I'm going to rewatch this series over and over again!

Exquisite craftsmanship. I don't think I could bring myself to use such a beautifully crafted faceplate for fear of damaging it; I'd be more likely to mount it on a plinth. Even if you don't scratch and ding it from routine handling, surely swarf is going to scratch it, and grease and dead skin cells are going to accumulate in the knurling.
