Did you notice how recently so many people in health industry are coming forwards with new truths? The book called the 23 former doctor truths by lauren clark made me question everything
My brother was consuming over 30 tablets of artificial sweetener a day (gradually built up over a number of years). He was consuming this by drinking 'light milk' and sweetening it with artificial sweetener !! He was able to stop doing this (no sweetened milk, just increasing water intake - he is very committed) and he lost 20kg. I felt that the artificial sweetener increased his craving for more sugar and carbs.
Anything the FDA recommends, I now do the opposite. Health and Beauty Mastery by Julian Bannett book exposes so many shocking truths. I completely changed my habits.
Though I understand your frustration, it's probably not a great idea to "do the opposite" of what the FDA says in a broad sense. I certainly would caution against anyone listening to advice from a "doctor" who claims his book was banned because of pharmaceutical companies. Learn to critically appraise evidence for yourself and don't trust strangers on the internet.
Obviously. It's very hard to live a modern life without consuming them though. Unless you cook every single meal, breakfast/lunch/dinner at home from scratch.. Everything will have sugar or sweeteners in!
I just watched a youtube video on this and research done it says it might actually improve microbiome, doesn't not raise insulin level in most people. i hope Zoe does more research on it.
You may have written this before you got to 49:00 where WHO views on the harm caused by "sweeteners" is summarized. "Allulose" name is owned by Tate and Lyle. There's a Wikipedia page about this chemical, using the non-commercial chemical name D-Psicose.
I would certainly prefer to have sugar than sweeteners, if only because of the taste. But I don't have a lot of either, and since I don't like fizzy drinks I don't have to worry about them. While it may be possible to have a diet completely free from any added sweetening I think I would find it very dull and I prefer to enjoy sweetened foods in moderation.
This does make me feel a bit better about the times I do discover I have artificial sweeteners in something I buy. I still think my rule of thumb is the same though: avoid artificial sweeteners and limit sugar. I do sometimes add xylitol to water and swish like a mouthwash for the dental effects after meals though, but I try not to consume much of it.
What about toothpaste? Almost all of them contain artificial sweetners and the dentists say don't wash out, leave the paste in your mouth to absorb more of the fluoride and the sweetners.
@@wdahoi3153 "Shows benefits" is perhaps specific for mouth stuff. Xylitol is really bad for my gut, as are most sweeteners, so it's nowhere near a universal thing.

How interesting: so animal life is really a symbiosis between the body's cells and its metabolic pathways, and the microbiome. Both affect the other, both need each other to thrive. You could say the microbiome is just as important as the rest of the body. What possibilities open up for research and health consequences. Such an informative programme, gentlemen! You would think that, because these products are out in the market and in our foods, that they would need to be tested and proven to be safe: NOT SO. You must be your own advocate in matters of food ingredients.
Processed food manufacturers need to hear from consumers that less ADDED chemicals, sugar, oil and salt is wanted in their food products. Why is there so much ADDED sugar in everything, even bread. That's just crazy Email, text, tweet or phone your favorite producer of poison and let them know consumers want less salt, oils and sugars in their products. Let their customer service department know that all the extra added salt, oil and sugar is not necessary or desired and is causing health issues. Reduce or eliminate highly processed food from your diet if you can. Go vegan for your health, whole food plant based. Go vegan for the animals. Go vegan for the planet. Go vegan and be healthier and happier. A lower risk of heart disease and cancer for you and a better planet for everyone, human and animals. Eating healthy is not a diet it is a healthy life style. Go out and look around. The vast majority of people you see are obese or al least over weight. People do not need to be fat shamed BUT being over weight is not healthy and leads to a host of illnesses. When you look around you can see all the unhealthy people without taking a blood test or a fitness test "NORMAL" for the average American is "UNHEALTHY" The health of society is in decline.

@@melvynbuckton6881 I mean that's just a weird thing to say. You may personally like added sugar, other people don't. You can retrain your sense of taste to "undo" its sugar de-sensitivity. Penn Jillette (of Penn & Teller fame) did an interesting diet (you can find details online) which he said completely reset his palette and sense of flavour. Edit: Here's an interview about it th-cam.com/video/NelIXCuuSZ0/w-d-xo.html
What about monk fruit is this also a no go? As a type 1 diabetic I must have spent years consuming all of the sweeteners. I do hope appendance with a good diet will make a gut recovery.
Some studies have reported that artificial sweeteners may affect platelet function, increasing the risk of blood clot formation and cardiovascular issues. Therefore, it is not only diabetes but also various other health aspects that require attention.
I was wondering about tooth paste too. I think the mouth has the second largest microbiome after the gut. I believe that toothpastes all have at least one sweetener in them.
I hate sugar and only use about 2 teaspoons (max) a year of dark muscavado when cooking rhubarb. The only other use I have for sugar is in feeding my Kombucha SCOBY. I like wholefood and detest sugar infessted ready meals. Many years ago when eating in Indian restaurants, I used to like Dhansak, which at the time was described as "Hot and Sour", in the last 20 or so years it has become horribly sweet and is now described as "Hot, sweet and sour" so I stopped eating it. Unfortunatly most main courses in Indian and Chinese restaurants contain sugar, so I now tend to stick to the vegetable side dishes. Re sweeteners, is this why there is often a warning about laxative effects on sugar free sweets? I tried to buy some caugh sweets/pastilles this week as have a sore throat and asked the chemist if they had any without sugar or sweeteners but unfotunately none exist. It is all very annoying. Similarly all nicotine lozenges contain 2 types of sweetener and no sugar, which is probably why they do not dissolve in the mouth and cause chemical burns as observed by my dentist.
Dr. Elinav, it would have been interesting to compare the microbiomes of the individuals used in your study (the ones who did not use artificial sweeteners in their diets) before, and then after the study. I wonder if their microbiomes had altered in ways that were observable? And, did their microbiomes return to normal in the months after the study ended? Obviously the sweeteners did cause changes, but were you able to quantify these changes?
Once changed does the microbiome revert back in the absence of artificial sweeteners? The study putting the changed microbiome into mice that then developed changes in their sugar metabolism seems to point in the direction that they do not revert back. Would love an answer to this question.
I am curious as to your opinion on the "new" sugar ALLULOSE. I have heard some knowledgeable scientists have a favourable opinion, but this sweetener was not mentioned at all in your show. I know it is a relatively new sugar, and not available in many countries at this point. Still, I'd like to hear what you think of it.
I was born in 1947, UK, so sugar still rationed after the war. I never acquired a taste for sugar, candy etc. I've drunk sweet drinks in very hot weather when no water or better liquid was available, possibly 6 times. Revolting.
Another excellent program, thank you, I grow Stevia in my garden and that is what I use, from time to time, not touched by any chemicals, humans acquire different tastes since childhood, and with a little bit of effort we can change them little by little, for many years I take coffee without sugar as an example, and I loved the real taste of it, what I used to taste before when I used sugar, was some coffee and sugar taste, so I was missing the real coffee taste.
When artificial sweeteners are discussed, why does it seem like time is frozen to a past era when stevia was the newest sweetener? What about the sugar alcohols and allulose?
So no specific mention of erythritol, allulose or xylitol, all which on a quick review seem to have positive impacts on the gut microbiome and metabolic health.
Easy - Chronic intake of both disrupt the microbiome, in low consumption either is fine. However equal intake of both, sugar is more disruptive to metabolic health and gut lining integrity.
Well sucralose certainly has a dramatic effect on my microbiome! Just the tiniest amount of sucralose will have me trotting off to the loo in a rather urgent fashion!! As you say, this stuff is popping up all over the place these days, so I have to be careful to read labels. When I stopped adding sugar to coffee and porridge I suddenly found I disliked fizzy pop. I had been a fan of Coca Cola all my life, but all of a sudden I really don't like it. I wish the same would happen with my liking of milk chocolate 😆
Like Tim, many years ago I had 3 teaspoons of sugar in Tea or Coffee. it took a while, but I reduced it gradually until I don’t have sugar in T. and just have about 10 grains in coffee. Couldn’t go back to it now.
Don't drink bad coffee. A few years ago I took a friend to a coffee shop, explained why she did not like coffee: cheap crap low quality commodity coffee, over roasted to mask defects, lack of investment in people and equipment. Served too hot. Yes, always too hot to drink. Coffee arrived. After an initial tentative sip, she drank the lot. I thought you don't like coffee? I don't. But this I enjoyed. Did you notice, you did not add sugar. Oh , I did not add sugar.
I guess it is early days yet, but has there been any study of how the microbes biochemistry is altered by these sweeteners? The fact that microbes seem to be altered is interesting - equally I guess we don't understand how? Ever since I studied Biochemistry I have been concerned about the unknown effects of many of the chemicals that we now get exposed to, especially exposure over a lifetime. Sometimes, i think sadly I became a secondary school teacher rather than a researcher.
The Fecal transplant after NAS is very compelling about the cause/effect. Its may be one path, though causality might still depend on other factors, e.g. if the microbes drive overconsumption.
For the next 100 years, we'll be hearing that artificial sweeteners COULD be bad for us. I guess those are the studies that get funded. But if they haven't found any direct and conclusive evidence of harm after all this time, I think we can take it as evidence that there is no harm.
Eran said that they have found evidence that for some people (depending on their microbiome) it does make their blood sugar control worse. I think it's best to steer clear of them as you don't know if you are one of those people until it's probably too late.
Avoid Coke. It's only use, cleaning the toilet. I don't put sugar in anything. The exception, cocktails, where I add agave syrup instead of simple sugar syrup. It is one and a half times. sweeter. I make an adjustment to compensate. With all the information on how bad sugar, why is it used to dust products when unnecessary..For example, mince pies with a light dusting of sugar. I do not add sugar to tea or coffee, and no way would I add syrups. The reason syrups are added to coffee, is to render bad coffee drinkable. Stop drinking bad coffee.
I have enjoyed kombucha, one of the drinks that Tim is recommending. However, I stopped upon discovering how much sugar is in the ones I have tried. Do you have a brand recommendation without sugar or artificial sweetners? Thank you for your show...Karen
No Sweeteners talk can be comprehensive without the newest kid on on the block: ALLULOSE: The so called "Ozempic of sugars". I've tried it (taste/baking/prolonged CGM'ng) with mixed reviews. Many of the talks & new studies on it seem to be biased. Based on this and all my other comments here, I call on Zoe for a followup: PART II.
I it gives me terrible tummy ache and bad wind… and it’s in so many things now. If I forget to look, I pay the consequences sadly. My body prefers honey or maple syrup
Look up FODMAP and its symptoms/diets. What you've described is a really strong suggestion your have some degree of IBS and/or "leaky gut". The FODMAP studies can help you figure out what you're sensitive to and what things to avoid. For example, I'd also bet you have certain vegetables (beans/pulses especially) that cause discomfort, or perhaps a lot of apple juice is an issue (Fructose sensitivity).
I agree. Artificial sweeteners give me terrible wind and even diarrhoea if I use too much so how anyone can say they are inert to the human body is beyond me. Nothing else I eat has such a dramatic effect. I avoid them as much as possible and never knowingly take diet products now.
@@DavidBeaumont interesting, i had ibs 30 years ago, got rid if it through diet. i have to mix beans with another windy food (ie eggs) to have issues. i drink apple juice watered down, and it seems to be fine as long as it has no additives in.. but i will look at fodmap. thanks
Has Dr. Elinav left the camera's image stabilise switched on? Its forcing the background and everything to judder and making my eyes ache. Stabilisation is meant for when the subject is moving through scenery.
I HAVE EPILEPSY AND A CHILDHOOD HISTORY OF HOSPITAL 🏥 VISTS I HAVE RECENTLY BEEN IN HOSPITAL FOR A HEART OPERATION WHILE MEANS NOW I HAVE A PACE MAKER INSIDE ME! I WAS WONDERING IS IT OK FOR ME TO USE EQUAL TABLETS IN MY COFFEE/ MILO INSTEAD OS SUGAR?
I think a teaspoon in a homemade meal with mostly or all whole foods is a hell of a lot better than a UPF with a ridiculously high sugar content. Of course, sugar is sugar, so if you're very sensitive to that (prediabetes/diabetic) or have struggled with sugar addiction in the past then be mindful, and try not to have it alone. If your baseline is NOT sweet foods, your palate remains sensitised to sweet. And whenever I do have something sweet it's in small proportion, in or after a sturdy meal with plenty of fibre, fats and protein to slow the uptake, and so from time to time I can scratch that itch without resorting to UPF. That said, there was a hot cauldron of chocolate at work today, and it was probably that stuff from the grocery store with carrageenan and stuff in it, and entirely too sugary, but I did have a small cup because I never buy it for myself. Then you'd have a whole liter of it to kill. One little cup, maybe 4 floz, just because I remember hot chocolate being comforting, and it was! But I did think to myself: could have done with less sugar.
I wish you had included some case studies and scenarios in your discussions instead of talking about facts and hypotheses. For example, which type of drinks is better for A) a diabetic obese patient and B) perimenopausal woman with a history of gestational diabetes and C) an adolescent or a child.
The trouble with that is that there's unlikely to be a single answer to any of these questions without sequencing an individual's gut microbiome. I've self studied my gut's sugar response to various foods, and a slice of wholewheat bread makes my blood sugar spike like crazy, but chocolate ice cream (and dairy in general) does almost nothing. The gut has unique responses for almost everyone, even those who seem "the same" from the outside.
If Dr. Eran specializes in microbiome, why isn't XYLITOL, discussed at all?? Studies show this particular alcohol sugar IS BENEFICIAL to the oral microbiome. This talk is far from comprehensive.
@DavidBeaumont it's for over an hour long for crying out loud. What are they politicians? You're missing the point. This guy is claiming to be a microbiome expert and talk is about sweeteners. That's like a dentist lecturing for an hour without mentioning teeth.
@@DavidBeaumont...but I did enjoy & learn from what he had to say! This is from someone whose also researched extensively this topic. See also my other above comments.
I think because people might do it in an attempt to eat more healthily it is very relevant. The UK sugar tax has seen artificial sweetners being added to all sorts of drinks and other foods that are marketed for children. Because of that alone, I'd say that it's an issue that doesn't get enough attention.
You show stevia as a processed, white powder. Stevia leaf is sage green once dried and ground to a powder. How can this pure form, not a UPF version, be harmful?
So what’s the alternative no sugar no sweeteners then what we can add to our tea and coffee? Ahh I always use Stevia I thought its safer than other sweeteners 😟
It doesn’t take long to adjust & find it’s nicer without any sugar or sweeteners, they become entirely irrelevant & unnecessary. As Tim said, then later on when you try you simply can’t as it’s so sweet & disgusting to taste that excess sweetness. It’s true… and much more healthy overall.
I learned to drink it without sweeteners on advice of my dentist after 2 abscessed teeth. He said warm sweet fluids were really bad for teeth. I quit cold turkey.
I used to love listening to these podcasts, but the presenters' constant interruptions And long-winded summarise put me off. I was considering joining the Zoe project, but again, I am being put off by the co-founder.
That sounds highly dubious, I'd be examining that study with a very critical eye as to who commissioned it, as well as looking to see if it was just one study that produced this result or if there are many truly independent studies that concur
I have taken artificial sweeteners instead of sugar since I was 17 and now87 I have always been very healthy but have now got heart problem in the last 2 years arising from rheumatic fever I had when I wax 26. No heart disease but one side not working as efficiently as before.
Without stating your lifestyle that has gone along with your obviously rather cavalier attitude to what was then possible but now proven health hazards, it makes it hard to believe what you claim. It is the singular outlier claims and stories like yours that make others hope for the same mythical outcomes, while living completely differing lives. I am also 87yr old and once drank half a cup of coffee that had sweet and low in it. I have since needed to had three legs amputated because of cancer and circulatory related problems directly caused by that half cup. My story is equally as applicable as yours with your scant and rather subjective claim. In every scientific study you will find outliers at both ends which is why they are generally removed from the results as they cannot be relied on as a common result.

I watched the whole program because it was indicated in the beginning but was never brought up, what a waste of my time!
Hello,
What is your opinion about stevia and it influence to our microbiom health?
@@DavidBeaumont interesting, i had ibs 30 years ago, got rid if it through diet. i have to mix beans with another windy food (ie eggs) to have issues. i drink apple juice watered down, and it seems to be fine as
long as it has no additives in.. but i will look at fodmap. thanks
Has Dr. Elinav left the camera's image stabilise switched on? Its forcing the background and everything to judder and making my eyes ache. Stabilisation is meant for when the subject is moving through scenery.

what about erythritol?
Makes you gassy
When will New Yorkers be able to join Zoe? Its the only state in the union not able to.
So all other us states can join?
I hope it’s ok to use organic maple syrup and honey, sparingly, in place of any sugar, including artificial sweetener?
Who really believes that diet sodas cause obesity? So if I'm underweight, should I drink diet soda to put on weight?
If Dr. Eran specializes in microbiome, why isn't XYLITOL, discussed at all?? Studies show this particular alcohol sugar IS BENEFICIAL to the oral microbiome. This talk is far from comprehensive.
Did they promise a comprehensive discussion?
@DavidBeaumont it's for over an hour long for crying out loud. What are they politicians? You're missing the point. This guy is claiming to be a microbiome expert and talk is about sweeteners. That's like a dentist lecturing for an hour without mentioning teeth.
@@DavidBeaumont...but I did enjoy & learn from what he had to say! This is from someone whose also researched extensively this topic. See also my other above comments.
Anti artificial sweeteners because of "man-made chemicals" but would promote and take 10 vaccine boosters if needed 😂
What about Stevia and Allulose?
Why did Tim say Monk Fruit was a problem? It is not an Artificial sweetener.
Isn't examining artificial sweeteners for adverse effects on the microbiome a bit targeted? I wonder how many other substances we ingest do similar?
I think because people might do it in an attempt to eat more healthily it is very relevant.
The UK sugar tax has seen artificial sweetners being added to all sorts of drinks and other foods that are marketed for children. Because of that alone, I'd say that it's an issue that doesn't get enough attention.
You show stevia as a processed, white powder. Stevia leaf is sage green once dried and ground to a powder. How can this pure form, not a UPF version, be harmful?
Just like death cap mushrooms can harm animals.
Interesting.
What about allulose?
Kombucha is made with tons of sugar
Fermentation consumes the sugar
@@nena-clara6270 Yeah I used to believe that too until I did some research. Tim should show the data.
Just don't add it to tea or coffee.. Very simple!
Milk
I used to love listening to these podcasts, but the presenters' constant interruptions And long-winded summarise put me off.
I was considering joining the Zoe project, but again, I am being put off by the co-founder.
it sounds like its better than sugar... Additionally there was a study that showed people lost more weight with diet drinks than they did with water
The studies don't highlight what was eaten.
Didnt look into this studies, but its probably only because of adherence.
I think it's because carbonated drinks fill the stomach so you eat less.
Who funded that study? I'm suspicious.
That sounds highly dubious, I'd be examining that study with a very critical eye as to who commissioned it, as well as looking to see if it was just one study that produced this result or if there are many truly independent studies that concur
So vague.
Hope he’s not cited or followed for his opinions on the origin of the Covid pandemic.

I watched a “ZOE” interview with Daniel Lieberman and was amazed at what was to me a feature length example of either deceit or stupidity.
I do not subscribe to either of these traits.
