    The line "Do me a favor and try to ignore" goes hand-in-hand with the next line "As you watch him fall through a blatant trapdoor". Everyone can see the trapdoor, it's easy to see through his illusions, but he wants you to ignore it and pretend like he's pulled off the trick. In other words, he's suffering from depression, he's trying to hide it, but the signs are clearly there for anyone to see, but no one's doing anything about it.

    My best attempt at deciphering the “do me a favor and try to ignore as you watch him fall through a blatant trap door” lyric:
    The whole song, the chord progression, the melody, all sound very circus-like. A very dark circus. “Everyone gather around for a show” is something that a circus ringleader would say at the start of a show, so it’s almost like the chorus is the main event, the disappearing man, a popular circus trick. Although in this circus the disappearing is actually a death, presumably by suicide. So the circus leader is saying gather around and watch this man disappear, but try to ignore that he isn’t actually just disappearing, he is dying in front of you. It’s also a kind of tongue-in-cheek way of saying, you haven’t cared about him before (society has ignored him, doesn’t even know he exists) so try to ignore him now. That’s my interpretation. This is a fun one to decipher. It’s straightforward on the surface, but there’s a lot of deeper meaning in individual lines that can be missed if not broken down carefully.

    This was before twenty one pilots got anywhere near big no one had heard of them. I think he was writing about his depression, and that he had thought of suicide. This is just coming from me I don’t actually know for sure, but I’ve always taken like this. His first album he wrote about how he felt that he wanted to kill himself and his fans who were lucky enough to find twenty one pilots then heard his cries for help and resonated. I think that scared him because he didn’t think anybody was actually listening. I think when people heard him listen to him and loved what he had to say and loved him he was horrified that he might influence others to do that. I think that vessel is about dark topics but not giving up. And yeah there are many complex feelings. I’m a full grown adult and I still have them. I don’t wanna be a burden. I feel like I am anyways I want to die but I’m too much of a coward to take it. I don’t want anybody around me to know, but at the same time I do because I want their help if they’re not willing to go a little deeper to dig and try to find out what’s up with me then they must not really want to help so I’m not going to force the subject. So I cry out by act certain ways when I’m really deep in my head to feel complete and utter horror over how I acted because I let the mask slip and Whate someone else down with something that I can actually do anything about in the first place. Why is it that we never do what we need or want to do? We don’t actually have that much control over ourselves. Very select you do in those people are highly successful everything they do. But even then the most successful people who are loved by so many still feel alone and don’t do things they need or want to do all the time we humans are very strange.

    Here’s my take on the “do me a favor and try to ignore” line. It fits in well with the narrative of the song, although it’s also a bit of irony. He’s presenting the narrative as a magician’s show, where he’s putting on a face, and asking that we ignore the trap door that is a metaphor for the reality of his life. Cause the magician doesn’t want you to know that he’s using a trap door to disappear. It’s ironic because we know that Tyler is all about ensuring these folks know that they’re not alone. But that’s how depression works... you try to hide it and keep it from others, even though solitude is the last thing you need.

    The “trapdoor” metaphor is referencing gallows, and how the floor lets out and the person drops into the noose. The “everyone gather around” part is like when people used to gather at the gallows to watch people be hanged for entertainment. I take the “do me a favour and try to ignore” part somewhat bitterly, like Tyler is sarcastically saying “you never tried to help me even though it was obvious (blatant) this was where I was headed, so for your conscience’s sake, go ahead and pretend you were clueless”.

  • @GrayShadowOfNight
    @GrayShadowOfNight 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    "do me a favour" that part refers to the "blatant" trap door. The speaker who says " everyone gather around for a show" is like "look at this cool trick of this man dissapearing right before your eyes, just ignore that you can see the trapdoor".
    From one day to the next, the man will be gone, and people will talk about it and then the game begins of "you could see it coming!", "I always knew something was up", or even the opposite of "wow I never would've thought", "he didn't seem like the type".
    when in truth both are tragic. Either, people didn't see the signs, even tho they were "blatant", or they saw the "blatant" signs and still did nothing.
    that's why it's a show and a magic trick. Everyone's watching. some buy into the illusion, some see the trick a mile coming, but they are all just onlookers.

    If you listen really carefully, at 9:38 he exhales. In my opinion, that brings that whole song from a third person perspective, into a first person perspective, because he realizes that he gotta get through everything that he said in the song again. Great reaction as always, keep it up 😁

    To me, the 'do me a favor and try to ignore' lyric is crucial. It's just how I see it, but I've always interpreted it as not wanting people to realize how severe his mental anguish has gotten. There's a lot of mixed emotions behind this particular line IMO, I may be just pushing my feelings on it, but I'd say it's a mixture of spite, loneliness, worthlessness, and an overall sense of making sure it wasn't apparent that he was ever this 'other' person. That these feelings never existed. That he's fine. So don't worry, watch the cool trick, don't ask how it was done, just be in awe, laugh, and don't worry about the things that've been done to achieve this 'smile'

  • @reigrayson

    Blatant is the official lyric (they used to hand out a lyric book at shows) but knowing Tyler, his pronunciation could be to mislead the listener. As with Stressed Out, "Out of student loans and tree house homes We all would take the ladder/latter". He likes to play with words. "entertain my faith/fate"
    As far as the last phrase, a lot of people would discuss that it's "cause nobody knows his life" or "he's alive", but the truth is that that phrase is not even in the official lyrics i mentioned earlier, so it could be either or both.

  • @brandonrust4114
    @brandonrust4114 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've seen other comments saying this as well, but I've had the same interpretation of the "do me a favor and try to ignore" line about how he presents the charade he's putting on as a show of some kind and how a performer would want the audience to not understand how the illusion is pulled off. But in this instance, he says the trapdoor is blatant as if it's obvious. As if his charade is easily seen through. It sounds like when he's saying "do me a favor and try to ignore" when people can obviously see the "trapdoor" right there, that he's really pushing away attempts at help or anybody pointing it out. As if he doesn't want to burden people close to him with his issues. In a similar manner, I always interpreted the last line of "nobody knows he's alive" as him still having a fighting chance. He's pushed people away, he continues living this charade of a life and people walk by him on the street either not noticing anything is wrong, or if they do know something is wrong, they think he's beyond hope since he's pushed everyone away and isn't even trying to hide it and they've given up on him. But I take the "nobody knows he's alive" to mean that he's still fighting and still struggling internally and there is still hope if only he gains the courage to reach out. He wants help, he needs help, but doesn't want to ask for it. Nobody knows he's alive I always took to mean that nobody, including himself, realizes he is still fighting and has a chance.

    bc it’s a blatant trap that no one would notice if he was gone! he doesn’t even feel confident enough to put his authentic self out there, but even then he’s still touched ppls lives in ways he might not know about. it was me that pointed out the blatant lyric and that’s what the words say in the original lyric book , but you’re still welcome to take it however you’d like lol

    The way i took " do me a favor and try to ignore " when i was at my lowest was if you can see past my mask and see I'm in pain then ignore it and go on with the show. Because I don't want your help so just pretend with me that everything is ok. Now that is just how i felt when I heard it so definitely not saying that is the true meaning. But definitely loved your reaction to the song. I watched a therapist react to this song before yours and was pretty hard to watch.

    The line about not dreaming but just looking at the backs of his eyes, maybe that could mean that his dreams are dead. Like his hopes for his future are over. Just a second, or third, it fourth interpretation... (I can understand the confusion of the blatant and bleeding. One person said that we heard bleeding because it says bleeding, but it sounded like it too, a couple of times. Maybe it's meant to be that way. Like Miss Believer / misbeliever and Message Man/ message, man, and the ladder/ latter thing in Stressed Out (someone else mentioned this one too). I don't know. Just my thoughts. Another great one!

    Every person you have ever met, has a different version of you in their mind. Yeah, you can easily mess yourself up with your mind. Also if you lose hope, you might die faster.
    " "This song illustrates the loneliness of the protagonist as he fights an intense depression which slowly eats away at his sanity.
    The trapdoor the song is named after refers to that found on the gallows where people were executed by hanging. This trapdoor is a hyperbolic metaphor used to illustrate just how dire the situation is. As he is metaphorically dying, he continues to “pretend he’s okay.” " Source Genius. *Yeah I think it's about Tyler and his depression and struggles with it.

    I believe blatant is the correct word but I personally think bleeding fits better as I’m not 100% on the meaning of blatant ((of bad behaviour)done openly and unashamedly.
    completely lacking in subtlety; very obvious.) fitting in whereas bleeding makes sense to me 🤷🏼‍♀️. Though as someone mentioned, Tyler is a master of putting things in a way that we can interpret ourselves & misdirection with the way he pronounces or writes lyrics - message (,) man, miss believer and so many others. I almost believe he actually says one then the other 😝.!!
    I think we can all relate to this song at times though - such a good one

    "do me a favor and try to ignore when you watch him fall through a bletant trapdoor"
    I think its the sufferer is talking about his made-up-personality in 3rd person. So by saying one should ignore his 'real self' he says that he doesnt want to talk about his problems. Like saying you are fine, eventhough you and your opposite both know better but you just dont want to get into it.
    Its kinda hard to explain and english is clearly not my first language but i hope you get what im trying to say

    "blatant trapdoor" is the correct lyric - like the trapdoor (or downfall) is clearly there even though he might try to hide the issues (or others may try to ignore them or not recognize them which would tie into the line before you were asking about)
    also, i think the last line is "cause nobody knows his life" - that seems to me like it would make more sense in the context of the song in how he wakes up and puts on a mask
    i'm interested to see your interpretation of Johnny Boy - i think it's one most people didn't really figure out until some recent interviews - the story behind it was actually given (which is rare)

    The line is bleeding trapdoor. Anyone who told you it's blatant trapdoor say that because they are new to TOP and heard/saw this on another reaction video that has the exact same background, with that wrong word in there. 10 years ago I heard it just as clearly as I do today, that it is bleeding trapdoor. You have ears. Use them. It's clear as day "bleeding trapdoor". Even if you do the Eminem trick to bend the word you won't make bleeding sound close enough to blatant to mistake it, and vice versa. Go back again and try it. Seriously. TRY to make bleeding into blatant as Tyler sings it. You'll hear bleeding every time. Because it is correct.
    Oh, and 95% of TOP fans have no clue what they are talking about when they tell you something 100%, definitely means something. I hate to say it but, unfortunately... it's the diehard clique that ends up turning most people off on TOP. That other 5% are amazingly cool people. But the other 95% are extremely pretentious, and THINK they are Tyler's brain for some dumb reason. And because they are not Tyler, and just have a crush on him, they like to tell people what the songs "really mean". If someone tells you that they DEFINITELY know the meaning of every verse of songs Tyler write, just ask them to tell you what a Kitchen Sink is. That will shut them up real quick. What does a song/lyric/line/word mean? Whatever it means to you. That's what it means. Don't worry about appeasing them. Just enjoy the music and let it do it's job of taking your stress and anxiety away. Don't let the clique make the music do the opposite by making you care if you "got it right" or not.
