  • This is a video on jaw surgery, and in particular related to jaw distraction surgery. The video is narrated by Paul Coceancig at Profilo.
    Inter-molar distraction osteogenesis, IMDO, is a new technique to help gradually grow the mandible, in cases of severe overbite. The surgery is in conjunction with orthodontics, or orthodontists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons.

    It's better than him being 24 and having this surgery after living through the rest of his childhood, teenage years and early adult life with a massive overbite that prevented his jaw from growing.

    It probably costs a little more than a chin implant. A chin implant gives you a chin button. A chin implant does not grow your lower jaw. It does not correct your overbite. It does not open your airway.

    It's hard to know what your child needs without having examined them. The biggest long term problem with neonatal jaw distraction is surgical damage to the tooth buds. I wish you well however

    Just asking, i saw that there might also be a Herbst Appliance method for the overbite? Or am i wrong. To me surgery and Herbst seem to do the same.

    Does a overbite prevent jaw growth? Just thinking for adults who have severe overbites and get surgery like this there jaws might be be small so would that complicate things?

    I'm currently 16 and about 5 months ago I got my braces off after having them for 2 1/2 years.
    I always knew I had an underbite but I didn't realise how bad my face looked side-on until now. My top teeth don't stick out, just my bottom jaw is too short.
    Can you get jaw advancement surgery after having braces/without getting braces again? Or what would be the best way to fix my overbite?

    Do you perform this operation on infants? Would you recommend on an infant to avoid the procedure later in life if there is known micrognathia causing airway obstruction from birth? Is there any research on long term effects of the jaw distraction as an infant? I have been told my daughter, who is 10 weeks old, needs this surgery.

    So a small chin is because of a deep bite because it causes the upper teeth to go downwards and can cause the lower teeth to look smaller

    • @PaulCoceancig
      @PaulCoceancig  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No… the growth pattern of the face is determined by genetics

      @@PaulCoceancig a deepbite means a short convex face because the upper teeth are bigger than lower or they overlap the lower teeth

    • @PaulCoceancig
      @PaulCoceancig  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@a3403567 no… it means a small lower jaw, and where the upper front teeth instead of protruding forward and supporting the upper lip… the front teeth lean inwards and downwards and cover the already set back lower front teeth… this is called a deep overbite and technically it is due to a small lower jaw, and a dental development of an abnormal arch shape of the upper jaw…
      The crowding that occurs in the upper jaw jaw can lead to small or absent development of lateral incisors, and impacted upper canines too
      But the root cause… is the genetically predisposed size and smallness of the front part of the lower jaw… called AMHypo
