    You are missing the point of the Odyssey's configuration.. the low output is essentially guitar-level because it's intended to be used with a pedal chain, which is expecting that input level. The XLR connector is extra hot because you are going to be using it on stage and there might be as much as 100-200' to the FOH. Otherwise, just engage the 20db pad on your mixer.

      I didn't get into why it was designed how it is, just how to get it nicely into a daw. The Xlr puts out nice line level signal, it only males sense to get that into the line input of the audio interface. Sure you could go to the xlr mic in if you have a built on pad, but many dont and why risk changing the sound from said pad. That said, my board which happens to actually be a FOH board (ML5000) has xlr in only and has pads and those dont change the sound. Still this video isnt about plugging to FOH boards. Its for helping get it into common audio interfaces. The Odysseys design pre-dates daws by a little bit. :)

    This video was excellent - thanks. I write this on day one as a B. Odyssey owner. This is also my first analogue synth having moved from years of software convenience, to the confusing nature, but rewarding experience of hardware. You solved several issues I had been scratching my head over - VCA gain sound and tuning the most notable. You should make more videos like this (seriously), you're a f'kin wizard man.

    the first point about xlr and interfaces depends on your hardware. On a fireface 802 you can use balanced xlr for line in on the pre amps. KNOW YER GEAR PPL! :)

    Thank you for this vid...as a guitar player I know absolutely nothing about this and was running into issues...connections...using a XLR and damn near blowing my reference monitors...my so happens to be a return unit someone got spooked with. But seeing this in the proper hands has me excited about things to come! I've got some midi bass pedals to hook up with this too! Can't wait!

    Thank you SOOO much for this info. You are right, I was calling for an RMA from the store when I decided to see videos for a resolution to my problem. The keyboard kept droning on and on. You pointed out the VCA Gain issue and that was messing me up. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

    You can patch the cv in and out together to get monophonic operation if duophonic bothers you.
    Great video. Not the easiest synth to get to know without some explanation and understanding of its quirks.

    ARP was always rather quirky, but to me that's part of the appeal. The 2600 flummoxed a lot of people, and the 2500 is a pure strumpet but boy do they sound good!

I currently have no room due to Kids moving out and filling the house with "stuff"! Its been like 18 months and theres no end in sight! AAAAARRRRGGHH!!!🤬

    I think this is one of the best clones Behringer ever made. It sounds awesome, especially in the Bass department. I can see why John Fox called this the first punk synthesizer. It can certainly hold up with the guitars and cut through the mix :)

    Thanks for the video. XLR sockets on an interface are usually switchable these days between mic and line level. So no need for mixed end cables. XLR is not exclusive to mic input anymore.

      Thats true on some but IME far from most. Keep in mind I made this video 2 years ago so im not thinking of things released after I made the video. I do studio tech support and I cant tell you the huge number of ppl that have had the exact same issue when trying to plug their mic preamp xlr into the xlr input of their interface dual jacks.
      Also I didnt mention this in the video but you can go the other way than I mentioned by using the "low" output of the Odyssey into the XLR which would use more amplification from the interface instead of the Odyssey. I think this is probably not tbe way to go as I cant imagine interface preamps offering a sound benefit. Would work fine probably if thats the only cable available. Where it would be good though is low out to a tasty high quality external preamp maybe something with cool transformers or tubes.

      No problem, thanks for watching. I plan to be doing more and better quality videos soon. Since this video I realized one more use for having the VCA bias (gain) up, and that's filtering external sources without you having to hit notes. The Odyssey has those 3 filter revs, so it's a great choice for running samples and other sources through.

    Cool video, I have a modern Korg (the standard slim keys model)and although I haven't even tried the Behringer I want one. The Korg has the same outputs, the XLR being the high power output too. I often do the trick where you take a lead from the Headphone socket and plug it into Instrument in creating a signal boost feedback circuit.

    I agree this synth is a little weird in the way it works. I have been a synth guy for 35 years and scratched my head a bit when designing sounds.

    Mine came today, I'd already read about the hpf "thing". To be honest.. it doesnt really work well if you call it a hpf.. it does thin out the bass a bit though.
    I'm gonna look at that in the same way the VCA gain is kinda labelled wrong too.. it also acts as a drone.

    Thanks for this - It confirms what I'm seeing in mine. I have one other question I haven't seen addressed anywhere yet, which makes me think I may have a potentially defective unit. When using the 4035 filter with resonance all the way down/off, the volume of the oscillator attenuates a bit as I move the cutoff near the top/completely open. The other two filters seem to keep volume consistent. Are you experiencing this as well, or is it perhaps just mine?

    If you roll your finger against the raised edge portion of the pitch pads it helps with the control curve a bit instead of just pressing the center......

    The Deepmind 12 I have has low output. Haven't tried the balanced outs though so wondering if it's similar issue.

    So, why in the world did Behringer configure the output jacks this way or at least give a warning on it or in the user manual? I got one too, plugged in the XLR and blasted my interface. Thanks so much for telling us how to tame it. I'd still like an answer from Behringer. First time I plugged it in the Vu meter needles on my interface pinned to the right and flashed red - what a shock! Thank goodness my interface is built like a rock, so it took it fine.

    Can I use a patch cable from the headphone output into the 'external in' to overdrive the filter input? Like the Moog 'trick'?

      I havent tried it but I dont see why not. I dont think that trick is all about filter overdrive though. Its really setting up a feedback loop. Thats going to thicken up the sound and make it more aggressive, well at least it does on minimoogs. My old Yamaha an1x had feedback you could dial in at the amp section, and it sure changed the character of the synth!

    My Odessey will not recive Clock, I have setup the Midi channels and no luck at all (Midi cable not usb) anyone else had this issue or know what to do please?

    HI..Just had mine, and this video is very helpful, as I was about to send back...BUT Im getting tuning drift up the higher octaves, set it for mid C and them up an octave it s a LITTLE sharp...what is your like THANKS again

      That's just generally what all monophonic analog synths are like. The tuning doesn't usually track perfectly over the octaves. Some are better than others at it but can usually be calibrated. I own 2 Behringer Model Ds as well and they even tell you to calibrate and how to do that in the manual. The Odyssey probably can too. It's normal for monos to be a tiny bit sharp after just once octave and then drift even further. I find 3 octaves to be thee useable range for most monosynths. What I do is go for a little flat at the bottom of the range you are going to play so that it's never too far out in either direction.

      Maybe, but it does work will with DI inputs on mic pres. Its just a much less amplified from the synth signal. That makes it great for giving that amplification somewhere else like mic pres and im sure youre right about it working well in guitar amps and pedals. Guitar pickups are really just a form of microphone.

I have a Hudson Broadcast which is basically a transformer coupled germanium fancy pants broadcast style preamp in a guitar pedal. First time I tried it into my desk it worked OK with some gain but sounded unremarkable - then used the DI input on the same desk and big difference! I will try putting the Bodyssey into the Hudson then DI.

      I haven't either though I didn't look that hard. I usually only make sounds on the Odyssey playing it's own keys, but when I do the performance for recording I use a bigger controller keyboard. One of the reasons for this is the 2 octave transpose on the odyssey, I often just want one and it's just easier to play on another keyboard. If the Odyssey had local control you could just transpose +12/-12 in your daw. I'll have to check in Synthtool to see if it can. BTW your welcome and stay tuned for some new videos by me in the near future.

    I have a mackieprofx10v3 mixer. It has two combo xlr/1/4 inputs. Can I just use a 1/4 trs male to male from the b Odyssey low output to one of these combos inputs?

      While technically yes, it depends on if the input gain knobs on the Mackie have enough gain available to get the incoming signal to a useable level. If it's anything like the amount of gain in my interface pre-amps then no and you'll get a crappy signal to noise ratio out of the mixer. even if they do give enough gain though, keep in mind you are getting more of the input amplification character of the mackie and much less of the Odyssey, which will give a different tone. That Odyssey output amp IS part of the sound. Still you might like the sound of the Mackie input amp more. Give it a go! Don't be afraid to crank that input gain, you'll probably have to.
      Might be worth a try on a tastier than what comes with a mixer stand alone preamp. You could also try just running from the headphone jack out of the odyssey using a 1/4 inch jack though it's slightly noiser.

    Behringer must step game up with midi implementation as both PolyD and ARP odyssey are having many issues when connected with usb to my Mac into LogicX. They get all those synths out on the market but as far as concern explanations in the thin manual or with tech support aren’t helpful at all, had to troubleshoot for weeks but again is up to Behringer to work on this synth app. Argh!

      The MIDI implementation is very poor on the B.Odyssey. It will respond to the pitch wheel over MIDI, but not the mod wheel (CC 1 is not assignable). I have been banging on at Behringer to fix this, and maybe they will in a firmware update, but for now modulation can only be applied using the PPC pad.

      Yes thats true and if you plug a regular xlr to xlr cable into the mic input of your audio interface you will clip it because that input will almost always be applying gain for mic level signals even with the trim all the way down. Some xlr inputs dont of course, like the ones on pro rack gear like eqs or compressors. My own mixing board has no trs line level channel inputs, instead everything goes in xlr and you use the pad to get line level. Still I can imagine just about everyone plugging in xlr to their audio interface and clipping it big time, some will only notice the bad sound. Theres also a low level 1/4 inch out but its too low for line level ins. Funny enough the way to use that is go into a mic pre with it through the DI jack and apply gain. It can be for if you want a different flavor than the odysseys own output gain.

      I don't know if they all do, but I can say I noticed after awhile that the sliders seem to be exponential. (at least on my early white led model) That means small changes at the bottom and big changes at the top. The original Odyssey may have been like this, I don't know. It's probably useful for working with the filters, where you want lots of resolution in the middle and bottom and don't need nearly as much at the top of the range.
      How does this effect headphone amp noise? Put up the oscillators in the mixer to 2/3 and VCA amplifier up about the same and play a few notes. Now raise the VCA slider the rest of the way up. The volume almost doubles! The oscillator sliders in the mixer are the same way. Once you are aware of this, you can do better gain staging and your headphone amp won't be amplifying a signal thats too low for it. It's not as important when going into higher quality line amps instead of the Odyssey's headphone amp. I should have put the gainstaging thing into this video, but I didn't realize it at the time I made this video, 2 days after getting it.

      @@TheAmerind If you mean midi clock so you can run all the sequencers together in time, I don't know (I'll look it up for you) because I almost never use the included sequencers in hardware synths like this. I use a daw for regular sequencing, but also if I need to arpeggiation I use Squareheadz Nora which smokes just about every arpeggiator I've come across.
      I sometimes use hardware sequencers like in my Electribe 2 just because it's an all in one fun-box. Im my travels (I set up studios & freelance) set up lots of Tritons, Motifs, MPCs etc generally all stuff with screens tho. In the past I used to use workstation synths more as sequencers but to me thats all just pretty antiquated. I'm really, really not into the dawless craze at all! My guess is it just outputs midi clock by default. I'll tell you what I'll look it up right now.
      Ok, and man I see why you're asking, the online manual is all the languages mixed together! On page 55 of the "quick start guide" it shows a snapshot of the Behringer Synth Tool. That may be the only way to change it but, I'm sure it's the best. The Synth Tool is a free app you can install on a computer or IOS device. In the "general" tab there is a "midi clock out" setting you can enable which will send midi clock out of course which is what you do if you intend on the Odyssey being the master, which then you would set all other attached gear to slave and have a midi cable going from out of the Odyssey to in of that gear. You can also set "sequencer auto sync" to activate it if you want to go the other way and have the Odyssey slave.
      The reason I said "if" in the beginning is I don't believe the U220 has anything to run on it's own like a seq or arp. I'm pretty sure its a bog standard sound module. If you are asking about how to just use this stuff together, I urge you to just get a daw going. I'm using Studio One 5 these days. Glad I could be of help. I plan on making many more videos. I've been teaching studio engineering and music tech stuff over 25 years and until the pandemic been so busy with that I'm way late to the youtube thing. I've defnitely let the early TH-cam opportunity pass me by. The fact this one video I made over a year ago is still going strong definitely tells me I should.

    Think maybe you have discovered the difference between balanced and unbalanced connections. +4dbu -10dbv. Professional v. consumer.

      I was plugging a XLR F (balanced) cable into a TRS (balanced) jack on my audio interface. Even with (if I remember right) a full 18db of gain on my MOTU audio interface I was not reaching peak. Yes I could plug into a mic preamp/DI/console with more gain than that, and that is probably how that jack is meant to be used. It might even be better than the amp in the Odyssey. Balanced itself is just about splitting the signal and flipping phase on the copy to elminate interference. Technically the balanced connector can put out a hotter signal, because of the extra in phase copy being combined at the receiving end and is probably why those +4 balanced buttons exist with saying "balanced" on them. A balanced connection isn't softer though, it's potentially the louder one vs unbalanced depending on how circuit is designed. BTW that mixing board isn't just a backdrop. :)

      @@housebandthexenos2569 In this vid you state the xlr is a loud signal and the 1/4" is a low volume signal. Again, the xlr is likely running at +4dBu, as a balanced signal, and the 1/4" is a tip/sleeve unbalanced signal running at -10dBv. Both are line level, but at two different standards. If you plug a -10dBv signal into a device that is on the +4dBu standard, your signal is going to be very low and will need amplification for most purposes.
      We're all annoyed at older gear that used xlr exclusively for their balanced connections, and 1/4" ts for their unbalanced connections. But nowadays most manufacturers will add a 1/4" trs balanced option as well (in a combo jack or a separate 1/4"), which we all prefer. I have to adapt all my xlr balanced cables to 1/4" trs to get into my balanced 1/4" patchbays and interface with the majority of my gear that is 1/4" trs. It's just an extra thing to buy, thing to wear out, and thing to rebuy. Or it's a dedicated, different kind of cable, that can only serve the purpose of going xlr to 1/4" trs. I'm adding an 8 xlr in and 8 xlr out device to my rig, but to interface with the rest of my studio, I need to turn all that xlr into 1/4", that's 16 new, specialized cables. $$$! not money I want to spend when I have thousands of feet of 1/4" trs cabling available.

      ​@@alphanumeric1529 actually I didn't remember right lol, I stated it needed 18 db of gain when I was using the XLR in my comment, it was of course the 1/4 cable that did. It was also 12db not 18. My observation in the video was just that the low output jack was REALLY low. It required more gain than the interface was capable of giving which can use balanced or unbalanced connections. There is a +4 -10 switch in the software for the interface that did indeed help that I did not show in the video, but still it did not get it all the way there. The interesting thing to try will be running the low output into the D/I input of a good mic preamp, to be able to get a different flavor of boost. Part of the issue I discovered after the video as well, is that the sliders on the B. Odyssey influence the values in a very exponential way rather than linear. They have a TON of effect at the top and very little at the bottom. It feels like the volume of the VCA practically doubles in the last fifth or less of the slider travel. That means if you have that vca down almost any you are putting out a much lower volume than it looks like. I really just wanted to drive the point home of the hotter output being better for most purposes without using an XLR-XLR cable and overdriving the input of the mic pres on people's interfaces. Thanks for your BALANCED input. lol.

    It's not the truth,that the pitch control work so bad.The internal use is fine.Perhabs it's the midi routing,that make the problem in the video.

      I had no midi hooked up in the video at all. I was just pushing the buttons and trying to hold the bended-to pitch. I even was gripping the outside of the case with the rest of my hand to try and give a more stable pressure. I do wonder if the odyssey can respond to pitch bend over midi, allowing use of normal wheels and benders. I havent tried that yet but will soon. Thanks for watching.

    you may like Behringer because its cheap but Behringer does not target the professional intrumentalist, their more like sales people, is like the Aldi Of musical intruments, they will break down sooner or later, mine has on 3 occasions. You will also find that the logic chips will start failing and your illumination LEDS on the sliders will start to fail, that would be the first sign. The swithces are somewhat flimsy and the PCB is a very poor flexing chinese design, doing repairs I noticed a lot of dried soldered joints and sloppy work, markings of flux residue everywhere, dark spots, not very neat. This syth is also not an ideal live performing intrument on stage because it is very fiddley and cant see all buttons and knobs at a glance, the sliders make it more difficult to perform live, but as a studio or a hobby peice it is alright to have, becasue it is cheap, sound close to the Arp and prices have come down further on the them...
    Now imagine Roland or Yamaha Doing same thing, it would be pointless and shame to their name....and all musical intrumental palyers in the world would fail on stage...
