    My school bought an Odyssey for the "music" room back in the 1970's. If you were especially good you'd get half an hour on it at lunchtime.... but if you'd been naughty they'd make you use it for the full hour.

      Funny. I bought the odyssey in 1975 to go with my Rhodes. I still play and teach.
      I would think in these times I would recommend neither of them as a first choice for a beginner. The prices for the originals is had to believe. I would not take either one for free if I had to keep it. Neither is practical for gigs. No patch memory on the ARP. You mentioned your school had one. The first Arps had a schematic sketched on the face intended not just for a player but for teaching synthesis. Plugins are free that let you explore making sounds till you quickly get bored. (whole hour if you were bad)

    Funny you should mention that part about not being able to do much with the synth at first. That is exactly how I got my Odessey (black and gold one, whether it has the Moog style filter, I know not). A friend of mine bought a parcel of equipment, and he asked me if I wanted the ARP, because he didn't like it for the same reason you mentioned. I asked him if he was sure he wanted to give it to me, and he said yes. So, I gladly accepted it. My first synth was an ARP 2600, so I had no problem making sounds on it. I still have to this day, but it needs a lot of TLC. I hope one day to have it restored to its former glory. Thanks for the viddy.

    I love the 1980s mouse organ version of Doctor Who. Always gave me more shivers than any other version.

    One of the coolest sounds on the Odessey is to use the sample and hold to control the filter. You can set the synth up to where a key press sends a random voltage from the S and H to the filter so that every key press opens the filter to varying degrees without effecting the pitch.

      That is one of the main reasons I got an Odyssey, yet unfortunately I am only able to get very subtle changes in filter cutoff with the S&H. Could never find much info online about this, am I missing something? Can not get it to sound like those 80s S&H filtered basslines whatsoever aside from manually riding the filter slider myself

    Nice demo Steve, it reminds me of my first synth, a Roland JX-3P poly synth nothing grand just 6notes polyphonic, I’d power it up and start to tinker to get the sound I wanted and by the time I’d managed it I’d forgotten what I wanted to play!
    “The Frankie Howard bit” LOL 😂
    Bontempi! You lucky devil, some of us could only dream of such an instrument as a kid my dad bought us a woollies fan drive read organ, I suppose it got me into keys.

    • @VintageKeysStudio

      Thanks ! I had a JX3P too once - very tricky to keep track of where you were on that one I seem to remember, but it did at least have presets and saveable user patches

    • @paulmcdonough9595

      I couldn’t afford the Juno, the JX-3p cut costs by leaving out most of the physical controls, I agree it was a bit tricky to see what you had done, it sounded typically Roland. I traded it in for a GEM WK8 Megastation an unusual arranger, and whilst the name sounds naff it has a nice poly synth built in@@VintageKeysStudio

    thanks for a fantastic and entertaining look at the B Odyssey. 🙂the sequencer bit "I'm perfect, are you?" from ELP karn Evil 9, 3rd Depression... I wonder if the circuitry on the 3rd version ARP Odyssey (black, white, and orange) differed significantly from the first 2? I remember the first one had the 'lawsuit' wheel pitch control and the Moog filters, which were soon removed (oops). Looking forward to the Bontempi! 🙂

    After the Poly D it seems to be another nice synthesiser from Behringer at Vintage Keys Studio which is based on a vintage classic. The Odyssey has that many faders and just two rotary knobs - what alone is a feature interesting to see. Thanks for sharing this video including the sound demos. All the best :-)!

    I serviced 3 Of these faulty units so far, The Case and the Keyboard is about the only solid thing on this unit, the electronics is very touch and go, the logic chips will start failing within a few years, and the Potentiometers get carbon deposit on the contacts which produces crackly, Scratchy and hissing sounds, You cant fix them they have to be replaced. the electronics is not Like the Original Arp, which was solid state wiring and Isolated VCO's . Beh has its integrated Sound, Logic, VCO's, Filters all on one board with the exception of Power regulation, Midi and Fading for the LED's. This method cuts costs profoundly. The VCO's, VA will go out of voltage alignment and Will have to be calibrated to the correct Voltage. Problem with this if one thing fails it will be hard to cross check the failed Logic chip, (almost everything is SMD) and will effects everything else including the LED's which I have come across. I'm Old school, but current service techs will not touch these and will tell you to get a another new one or throw it out. But yes if it works like new, it sound great or close to the real thing. These are the Cons of cloning an Original Analog Synth, Pros you get a cheap unit that sound identically or almost like the Arp. If you are technically minded like me you will notice the difference of Analog sounds but for the newcomer the replicated sounds great for the very first time.

      @DorisDay-lw4xs I feel you, I repaired quite a few, honestly I spent hours pulling my hair on some individual units until i find a problem or resolve which wasnt what i expected, and the root cause is always cetainly ends up in the same manner, bad design flaws on the PCB's and outsourced third party (Cheap) components. I had similiar units made by Yamaha and Roland lasting a lifetime with care. Every equipment needs maintenence from time to time, but when it suddenly dies on you, its a flaw in the design, or rush to get it out soon, which I claim is not fit for proper ot proferssional Use.

      @@EmperorKonstantine01 I'm really not much of a (as in good) tech, but I've worked on quite a few things a bit doing simple repairs. ARP seems to have not been well made, Roland and Yamaha, just the opposite. Norlin-era Moog... questionable, but still, man, those PCB's... I have a micromoog that was literally thrown down a flight of stairs in the 80's. The cabinet has never been fixed, the circuit board has been flopping around in the garbage broken particle board, and it *still* works. I doubt very much my KARP would survive that. I really wish to see a comparison in build between the KARP and the BARP. But I can't of don't want to know how the sausage is made. I've had my MS-20 mini apart and used it with the sides of the case off at one point for over a year with no ill effects and it survived. But I wouldn't call the thing "rugged" based on that trivial abuse.

    • @raymosmookle9373

      Oh... never made my point about the Norlin Moog. The PCB was well made. The traces were nice and thick.

    2/4 poles refer to how quickly the filters roll off. The more poles the more aggressive the filter. I think that the 4075 numbers etc. refer to the different ARP implementation of these filters.

    I like this excellent guy and his gags. The Behringer cat + Arturia keystep and some effects is probably a decent alternative also for these kinds of sounds but I still want a Moog Grandmother for a mono synth. Hope Behringer stick this exact effects unit on their announced Neptune 8 Juno replica if they ever actually release it. The effects module on the Deepminds was super annoying like so much of the menu diving on those even though they sounded killer

    • @VintageKeysStudio

      I had a moog grandmother but for some reason didn’t get on with it I think it was the colour scheme (I didn’t have the black one)

    • @electrosonicnebula

      @@VintageKeysStudio Haha yes those colors, hate them or love them. What I like the most about it is the big buttons and the actual interface of it, and the LFO section, how you look at it and you understand everything in one go (well, maybe not the meaning of life but at least how the synth works which to me is in stark contrast with the Minimoog which makes go huh? What?). With respect to my future grandmother I would have preferred if it had a delay on there in addition to the reverb and if it had two full-fledged envelopes, but I'm happy with that gate VCA option, and the Matriarch is way too much to think about for my small brain. Anyway you can't choose your grandmother. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHY Very funny. My mono synth at the moment is Arturia minibrute 2 but I'm sick of it. I never could get super cool sounds out of it. I did a lot better with the Minibrute 1. I'd love to visit your fine fine studio one day and play that Honer Pianet T and buy something in case you're selling anything. Or have something repaired. I have the Behringer VC340 that thing is super amazing. Now I have to learn synthwave. Think I will get the Behringer Cat too Miaow Miaow. Oh my god. How will I pay for all that stuff

    The PPCs were just ARP's perversity.
    Moog already had pitch and mod wheels, so ARP had the PPC pads.
    Moog had knobs, ARP had sliders.
    Moog had wooden sides, ARP had leather sides.

    Behringer 2-XM would be better but ain't plugins under rated for just having pre sets and then tweaking them
