Hi Tsula! Nice eyepiece. But I wonder what my meade 56mm 2inch super plossl would perform in your 10 inch meade cass? Clear skies.

I have an Astromania 56mm 2". I used it in the 12" SCT and liked it. So, I took it with me on my camping trip and it did pretty well.

Which version of the 56mm do you have? Meade has had different versions over the years. The japanese ones are better of course, and earier ones were 5 element, and later ones and all taiwan and china ones are 4 elements and I'm sure at one point meade was using the same vendor as astromania. Celestron also has one in the omni line that I suspect to be the same as the astromania and meade.
As far as the japanese meades go , if Japan is stamped on the chrome barrel, it is a 4 element, and if it is stamped into the black body, it is a 5 element. All of the original smoothside versions were 5 element with the stamp on the body, but there was a transition period where the rubber eyecup and grips were added and it was still a 5 element with the stamp on the body.
I am a nerd about old meade eyepieces, I currently have the smoothie version of the 56mm.

@@k.h.1587 The 56mm is a Astromania. I will look at it when I get back but I'm pretty sure it's made in China.

Congratulations to K.H. I was wondering if you could answer a question about astronomy for me. I have an 8 dobs and set it to Saturn last night and it was crystal clear but I saw no color. I was using a 9 mn SvBony eye piece. What would I need to do to see color in Saturn? My skies are suburban. I also was wondering if I could see Neptune w this setup? Thanks doug

    • @tsulasbigadventures
      @tsulasbigadventures  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Doug: At magnitude 7.8 you can definitely see Neptune with that telescope. The colors of Saturn as pretty subtle. Even with my 12" telescope the colors are barely detectable. To see the bands on Saturn requires excellent seeing conditions. Also it will be easier when Saturn is at opposition. Saturn will next be at opposition September 8, 2024. That will be your best opportunity to make out the bands and other features. This year the rings are nearly edge on and hard to see.

I can see color in my etx90, but that was 3am when it is at its highest, and the seeing was good. And I have 20 yrs of "seeing" experience.
In a properly collimated 8 it is possible, but try raising the power, or even using a light neutral density or polarizing filter, since the brighter image in an 8" may make seeing the color a bit harder for beginners.
I have seen the color very easily in 14" and larger scopes, but seeing was good and we had the power cranked up.
Don't expect it to look like the images that top planetary imagers get ,they can saturate during processing, and sometimes are using 1000s of frames from several minutes to an hour or more of video data

Also, svbony eyepieces vary in quality and sharpness. In many.cases, a plossl will do better. Svbony plossls are bottom of the barrel plossls though. The best low cost plossls are the celestron omni, made in china by synta. Older taiwan versions made by GSO are still good, buy synta makes the best plossls outside ones made in Japan, France, Germany or Russia (baader is German, but their eyepieces are made in china)
If you are using the svbony sv113 9mm WA60 eyepiece, a plossl will.give a sharper view. If you are using the gold line or red line wide angle, the view will be a little sharper, but still not as sharp as a synta or gso plossl, but the gold and red line have longer eye relief and wider field than a plossl.
The TMB planetary series is the best of the affordable $40 range long eye relief 58deg eyepieces. I have the original version from about 19 years ago. It is very nice, but when I want to get the best view possible, I break out an old japanese made plossl, super plossl/ultima or orthoscopic . These can be found from $25-50+ used, but more in the $100 price new, baader eudoascopic is the current japanese 5 element ultima/super plossl that is still available new, and KK fujiyama orthoscopic and takahashi starbase orthos are the current orthos from Japan, though the starbase line is more affordable ,.made FOR takahashi, not BY takahashi. Takahashi eyepieces are very expensive.
Baader classic orthos are another option, but I am not 100% sure where they are made.
As for plossls, the only japanese made ones still being made, that I can think of off the top of my head are televue plossls.
I buy most stuff used, and meade japanese plossls tend to be fairly common and affordable on the used market. Cloudy nights is probably the best place, since astromart charges a fee. But they do pop up on ebay, craigslist and Facebook marketplace.
Just make sure you go for.the ones made in Japan. And any brand of japanese made plossl is going to be a good eyepiece.
But even most chinese plossls, are pretty decent. Plossl is one of the easiest designs to manufacture.
