Aprilia Tuono vs. KTM 990 Duke Pt. 1

  • Not all of us can afford a brand new bike, but the thing is, we don't really need to. Bikes from a few years ago are still awesomely fantastic but can cost a fraction of the new price and if you shop around carefully, you can find low-mileage examples that are, to all intents and purposes, as good as new. Mat and Harry head to their favourite bike dealer in Johannesburg and choose two that take their fancy.

Thanks so much for taking the time to put together a great review of two bikes that normal people can afford! I used to watch reviews of these two bikes ten years ago, and it is great to do so again, but with much better content and editing. A decade later and it is down to these two again for my next naked bike! (Owned a 2007.5 Tuono and severely regret selling it!)

Well let's see. The Aprilia isn't twitchy nor uncomfortable and is dressed in an Armani suit.
I'm guessing it gets the win after this short break...

I put north of 50,000 miles on my 1st gen 2003 Tuono (and it had 20k miles when I bought it), and a great deal of that mileage was touring all over Western Canada and the US. And not credit-card touring, I had comfy camping gear strapped on the back along with a Ventura pack system. Added a Garmin Zumo, throttle lock, lower vario pegs, Powerlet socket for heated gear, a Sargent seat, with stock windscreen, and it was IMHO a better (well, more fun) touring bike than my heavily farkled 955 Sprint ST it replaced in just about every aspect other than range. The thirsty Tuono was good for about 150 miles with a tailwind and modest throttle, the Sprint could do 250 on a tank.
Seriously bulletproof machine too, that Rotax lump never let me down (though I did keep up on valves, oil changes, chains, etc). When I finally sold the bike (moved to Malta for work, had to) in 2013 I died a little inside. As a consolation, I bought a 150cc Kymco scooter in Malta.

Excellent video, I have a 2017 Kawasaki ZX10R for track, but not comfortable for street, I also had a 2015 Kawasaki Versys 1000LT for touring, didn't really do much, so I traded for the 2016 Kawasaki Z1000, I think I have the best of both worlds !

anny older bike thats a huge Vtwin, like a sv1000 or anny other transalp or whatever, are the best bikes you can get, i still dont understand the craze of supersports for the street, when you can have that huge amout of torque

    Nice jamjar of coffee.
It would be the KTM for me. KTM have had more reliability problems with their later bikes.
Touring on naked bikes: I do it on a B-King. No problem at all. It's great around town, as well.

I've been a naked sportsbike sort of guy for years. I've toured on them. Then I talked myself into a V-Strom 1000XT and did some mileage on that just recently. The thing about getting too hot and not having enough airflow? Exactly correct. I found myself leading off to the sides of the windscreen to evaporate the sweat on my face and scalp. I already miss some naked sportsbike experience. I will say it was a 101°F day however (38°C).

Had both - still have the SDR. The Aprilia is a much easier ride, but the KTM is next level beast - horrible to ride below the speed limit, uncomfortable and horrible to commute on. However, you’ll never get bored of it as it’s super edgy and it feels like it’s gonna get you. I love mine - longest bike I’ve kept

Had a tuono(in the same colours actually) and mate had a 990 superduke and had a go on it. The tuono is amazing but is in no way practical, pretty sure the ktm is the same. Thirstier than a hungover fish, high pegs, high maintenance etc etc. Wouldn't let that put anyone off of either though as are both brilliant.

That does backfire on us though, manufacturers then either kill off models or don't update them, or they do update but don't do it all the way.

That's not a true superduke R, the real one is the 2008 model. Black bike, orange frame, Titanium aluminium nitride coated anti dive forks, akrapovic headers, tickled engine to 132 bhp,...

I can only speak for the KTM but a couple of hours on a motorway is pretty tiring - have no wind protection is uncomfortable and no you dont want to sit on a motorrway for more than a hour nevermind all day. But the critical point is that big twin has a lot of vibration especially at 70mph up, not good touring material at all.
Obviously there are people touring the world of C90's so anything is doable but if you want to do a tour of europe this isnt gonna be your first choice it wont just be fine

The cost of a decent bike is about as much as the depreciation of a BMW the moment you drive it off the forecourt.
