    See what it’s like to get checked out in the Beechcraft Staggerwing. AOPA Editor at Large Dave Hirschman introduces AOPA Air Safety Institute Senior Vice President Richard McSpadden to the aircraft. Richard was the lead for the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds demonstration team-but even with all that experience, he’s enamored with the classic taildragger. Wait for his “wow” moment when it sinks in that he’s flying a Staggerwing!

    I appreciate you guys showing that even a high time, very experienced pilot, can't just fly everything perfectly the first time. The fact that everyone should have a check out in a new type of airplane is a good lesson.

    Good god, it was a miracle they didn’t crack that thing up. The guy in the right seat should have been way more assertive on that takeoff. That was scary.

    That Richard McSpadden, former commander and flight leader of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, had trouble flying the Staggerwing, illustrates both that everyone needs adequate ground school before flying transition training and the Staggerwing has unusual flying characteristics that makes it difficult to fly. I suspect it has huge P-Factor.

    My Grandfather owned a E-17L N18785. Was in Sport Aviation Dec 1966 and Flying 1959.
    I went up in it a few times as a young kid. Every time I see a Staggerwing I get goosebumps. Thx for the video. 👍🫡🏆

    I flew over 300 hours in the right seat as my father' co-pilot. Love the airplane! Sure do miss it.

    WOW ... runway light here I come.... Nice that you guys allowed us to see that not all is perfect and it does take practice to aviate. I have loved the beauty and graceful lines of the staggerwing as long as I can remember. Definitely beyond my dreams ... I'm just happy that people will let me fly their C172. Thanks again for the video

    Beautiful restored staggerwing but for decades I advocate not to wear those baseball caps (look-out limiting devices) in any cockpits 🥶

      @@FlyMeAirplane if it was gusting 21 off the front quarter that was not a bad landing in a Tailwheel.

    OMG, why did the owner let two people fly his plane that don't know what they're doing? No mention of pulling the prop through before start....lucky to not hydraulic lock the engine. Using right rudder would have kept it on centerline on takeoff. You do not "unscrew" the throttle on landing! Using rudder on landing would have saved that dangerous drift. People, do not "loan out" your Staggerwings ....good way to ball it up. (yes, I own one. yes they fly great if you know what you're doing).

    This flight was embarrassing! Round motors are started with the mags off for at least a few blades! Do you not understand runway centerline control on both takeoff and landing? What about ball in the center? What about trimming away forces?

  • @bromschwig
    @bromschwig 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It’s clear that these two pilots don’t fly radial engines or tail draggers. Do they understand the R985 has a supercharger? They used full throttle on takeoff at 300MSL airport. Gave them 40” of Mp.
    Way over limit for this engine.

    wow that was a horribly scary takeoff AND landing. I'm surprised Dave never tookover at any point during the takeoff OR landing, wow....looks like an imminent loss of control on both the takeoff roll and the rollout for landing............................................
