Day in a Life of an Airplane Ferry Pilot!

- Going back to my roots and bringing you guys along with me on a day in the life of an aircraft ferry pilot! Well two to be exact. I built most of my flight time as a teenager ferrying airplanes across the country, so it’s always a nice treat to take a break from the big jets and deliver an airplane here and there. In this episode, I ferry a Cessna 421C Golden Eagle from California to Texas, and the next day ferry a Jaguar Bonanza from Colorado back home to California. I talk about how I became a ferry pilot and how it could be a great way to build hours aside from the normal CFI route. If you enjoy this ferry flight, make sure to like and subscribe because since this was filmed, I’ve done a few more ferry missions that make this seem like a walk in the park! (Hint, they involve flying in other countries 😉) You won’t want to miss it!

Owen..as a retired airline Capt who came up via GA flying, turboprops and then heavy iron, I like the way you handle yourself and the aircraft you fly. Please consider a little CFI work on the side. You’re a great example and aviation could use young, experienced pilots like yourself teaching the new generation. Fly safe!
wow...
this is scare, my cat sad
what great advice, no attitude, just encouragement and positivity.
I agree I sure use a CFI with Owen's patience makes the difference
100% Agree. He is up to the task. Very smooth, organized and make it look simple. I'm a previous ATC and commercial twin pilot retired now.
“Air conditioning comes off” reminded me of my little inline 4 when I’m ready to fly down the high way
I like your attention to detail. Excellent airmanship and judgment. I am a retired airline pilot with 54 years of flying experience including Fighter jets (A7-D Corsairs), Safety Chairman at my last Airline job. Retired from the A-330 200/300 International. You do a great job, very professional. Keep these videos, many new pilots will benefit. I still do.
Thank you for watching! And for the nice comment
Good video. I only did one aircraft ferry, in '79. I was a CFI in Southern California and was begging my Boss to let me do a ferry. Leasebacks were very popular back then, for tax reasons, so many rich folks were buying small planes then that wouldn't have been otherwise. He usually used pilots who had standby airline privileges in order to keep costs down. My day came, deadhead to Lock Haven PA to pick up a brand new Piper Tomahawk from the factory and ferry it back to SoCal.
I later realized that the reason I was assigned the flight was that no one else wanted to fly a Tomahawk cross country in March! The trip took about 29 hours and I learned a lot along the way.
Owen...so cool how you help those who helped you get started! You are truly a class act! Thanks for taking us along on this trip and surely enjoyed the piston power!
Golden eagle is sweet! Another nice video!
I helped N988JG get off the runway in March of 2018 after a hard landing. The two Navy guys had borrowed it for Bonanza Society flight training and wrecked it. When I asked how hard they said both headsets flew off their heads! At that point the flat tire turned into a jammed right strut, wrinkled fuselage, wrinkled wing. It was a banger. It’s good to see it flying again.
Carrier landing
Awesome couple of planes and flight thank you
lol, I'm sure Owen was happy to read that bit of history after he was already safely on the ground.
I love when pilot vlogs feature the FBO and food. It’s one of the best parts about the GA flying experience. 😊
You must really like Matt Guthmiller, I gain 5lbs watching his videos!! LOL 8)
Great job on helping the guy out that got you started in all of this. Hat's off to you! :) You didn't forget where you came from, so to speak.
CFI/II/MEI here. Ferried a c172 from Orcas Island, WA (KORS) to Sherman, TX (KGYI). Was probably the coolest thing I’ve done in my short aviation career. 10/10 would do it again!
I'm based in Sherman. Thanks for the visit!
Love flying (and boating) the San Juans!
Owen. Wondering if you had a specific reason for the ifr/vfr on top then staying with FF. Why not just stay IFR and put that bird in at FL230. That's where my 414 performs the best TAS 210 burn less than 40gph. 6000 cabin altitude.
I flew into San Jose, CA regional airport back in 1979 at the age of 20. It was my first time in a single engine Cessna. I was hooked. Your video is simple but impressive. It gives viewers a visceral feel for the similarities and differences of both types of prop planes...All the way to the clothing necessities.
Single engine over the rockies, so much fun. Remember altitude is your friend.
Thanks Owen, really enjoyed you allowing us along for the adventure.
To heck wit catching up with all the news, flying with Owen is far more enjoyable! You don't disappoint, big thanks as usual.
Another awesome video. Just got my commercial license a couple months ago and this video is perfect food for thought. Thanks again for the content and the words of wisdom.
Golden eagle is sweet! Another nice video!
I love when pilot vlogs feature the FBO and food. It’s one of the best parts about the GA flying experience.
Owen another nice vid; my flying career was similar; aircraft sales, flying anything anywhere, lots of adventures in 14,000 hours. Now just play with a Super Cub and Cessna 185😀 I learned to fly as far as possible on the first leg, nothing ever goes wrong; but don’t trust anything after that👍
Nice change of pace content Owen. Always enjoy all your videos. Makes me wish I had gotten into flying at a young age. Stay safe and keep the great content coming.
Humble yet inspiring are rare traits these days, yet you consistently demonstrate both in every video you make. The days of piston cabin class twins are well behind us so thank you for showing us a bit of the great days of GA in the 70s-80's, when beauties such as these two aircraft rolled off the assembly lines in the hundreds! Thank you for you Owen....
Hi Owen. Man, I don`t know how you do it you nail butter each and every landing, weather it is the gulfstream, the Bonanza, The Citation, The Piaggio, you name it. It`s a pleasure to see. Good winds and happy landings from Portugal.🤙
OWEN! This is weird! In 2002 I ferried a nearly new B36TC from Santiago, Chile to Woodland, CA. N978JG, the one before this off the assembly line (s/n EA-637). Memorable trip! 7 days, 44.5 hours, 11 stops. It's now based at Steamboat Springs CA.
Thanks for sharing your movements... It's an EYE-OPENER for the peeps who don't know... thanks 😊
Love the sound’s of well balanced GITSO’s esp on T/O ☮️ !!!
Agree!
Thanks never gets old
Universal airplane pilot. I think it would be cool for this to become even more true. Military jets, experimental stuff, high altitude stuff, the low and slow stuff, etc..
Good mentoring. A good pilot always flys by the numbers.
I am not a pilot but have multiple family members that are it is very smart to have a camera in there with you to back yourself up wish that alot more airlines would do that. Not for youtube but for safety purposes. Keep the great videos coming. Fly safe man
1st time viewer (of your channel 👏).
Saw you with JR a few times.
Love the idea of Ferrying .. getting to fly a myriad of aircraft to a myriad of destinations.
Awesome.
Thanks for tips on how to get involved. Appreciated.
always nice to see you Owen!
So smooth! Flying and videography.
Excellent.
Both Grand Junction and Rifle are really pretty areas and awesome FBO’s. I’ve been flying them regularly for pipeline work and I absolutely love flying in the mountains (when it’s warm) 😅
Love all the variation in your flying career.
You do a great job in showing the different aspects of flying in different airframes.
Still trying to figure out how you keep up with recurrences in all the different types, EVERY YEAR!!!.
Good job all round.
Hello, Owen! Nice to see you again, greetings from Croatia!
Thanks for the ride along. I can no pass the medical, but today I felt like was actually sitting in the right seat. Not only are you cool, smooth pilot, you are one hell of a videographer.
GA Pilot and AMT love the 421 aircraft. was my favorite, we has a sweet 421 we maintained , though I never worked on the much simply miss GA as I'm a Commercial AMT now. Just subscribed to the channel. thanks for making the videos.
looks like you miss GA also, Love that you would keep to your roots and return those favours. this world needs more attitudes like yours.
Jim Bob’s isn’t bad BBQ. I was there that day as well in the Mooney N58143 landing just before you. Great videos as always.
Flying along with the GOAT!! Thanks
Hi Owen, always enjoy your videos here in Ireland. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing man , another great video
..thing like self improvement!..
now you said something very important...'to advance together.'..for some thats gold..for others its not..alone is best.
this was a great video! I've been really wanting to know alternatives to CFI and I'm glad I found this about ferrying. thank you!
Love that Bananza ,, thanks again for taking us along 🤙
Just found your channel. As a fellow pilot I am glad I found it. I love the explanations you give and the fact that you are pretty meticulous about using checklist. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more of your videos. Take care.
Thank you very much for the nice comment! Much more content on the way.
Back in the 80's a friend had a gig flying (rented aircraft) bank checks (PM flights) from San Deigo to Burbank. He hooked up with six other pilots and they had a flop house (apartment) in Burbank for RON's. If I remember correctly take off around 6PM with load of checks, land in Burbank and hand them off, RON and back to San Deigo for another load. He did the a few days a week for extra money and flight time, I think it was also a full time Fri, Sat & Sun gig.
This reminds me of the time I used to fly out of Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose. I was working on my CPL at the time. On Memorial Day weekend 1988, I flew a 100 HP Grumman AA-5A Cheetah from San Jose to El Paso, TX and back. I decided to surprise my aunt who lived in El Paso. It was a long 7 hour flight (total flight time one way) over the desert in Arizona and New Mexico. I stopped in Gila Bend, AZ to refuel coming and going. I also stopped at Fox Field in Lancaster, CA on the way back. It was quite the adventure.
That’s awesome!
Great video Owen! As you said, nice to mix it up a little and get into different planes, even pistons. I saw you (on TH-cam) at what looked to be an influencer seminar sitting next to Hoover. Hope you had a good time at Osh and I’ll see you in the next one!
Thanks Owen for taking us along with you! Your content is great! If I was ever in need of a private pilot, I know who I'd hire lol! Keep up the work and safe flying!
Thank you very much for watching!
Always great, Owen! Such a wonderful career!
I used to work on the 421 models - all of them. When the C came out I thought it was the best airplane around (although I still wanted a 210P).
Video was more interesting than I thought it would be :) I haven't flown in years but that ferry job looks pretty chill.
Wow excellent! Superb presenter and possibly the best piston engine aircraft ever!
You look like you're enjoying your work! That's how it goes when I'm dreaming of flying a 421 😅
Thank you very much!
Awesome mate, great video...was like being onboard....Well done! 💯👍🛩️
Owen Been Following your channel for 2 years..very informative and very cool on all the difference planes u fly 😊
Thank you for watching!
Inspection of new a/c, detailed forms review, and pre-flight of a new-to-you a/c would make a good video. Cheers!
So awesome. I just got my PPL in early January. I would love to be doing something like this. I’m working towards my IFR rating right now. Really enjoyed this!
I'm almost certain that, your first delivery is better known as the "421 GOLDEN SEAGUL, however, you're gonna have fun... cheers not beers, pls continue to monitor and adjust 😊
You have come a long way in your flying adventure Owen congratulations on all your hard work dedication and success . Great video.
Thank you very much!
Great Job, nice video, nice planes ! You are doing really great job sharing this with us !! Thanks for your passion and professionalism !!!
Always enjoy your thorough explanations regarding your flights. I usually want my pilots to have some grey hair (experience), but over the years watching you I would have no reservations with you at the controls. Another great video on an aspect of aviation not covered much.
Great video thanks. Upgrading that Golden Eagles panel - I’m over here in the UK with a basic GNS430 I’d love to upgrade from lol.
Owen I paid to have a light sport ferried from the east coast to Utah. He had terrible weather and was beat up pretty bad over 2 days ! I very much liked the day in your life video . Thanks
Awesome content. Very well done reading the comments and doing some different things every once in a while. Keep up the flying!
I'm retired from aviation and I love your videos. Great job.
Babe, wake up, it's a new video from Fly With Owen!!
Thank you for sharing your great trip here. I hope the lunch stop on ypur first day was nice at thay airport restaurant. Both aircraft that you ferried looked beautiful. But I do like the Cessna aircraft a little more!😊
Typing to fast! I hope the lunch stop on "your" first day.😊
At "the" airport. I felt pretty happy seeing the clouds in the sky. Nice flying.😊
Not a pilot but love these videos Owen!!!
Always a good day when my glorious king posts a video
Good video! Good to see how easily can you handling the Cessna and the Bonanza! Both landing were perfect...
Nicely done. Thanks for the history and insight.
If I get a vote, I'd request a main view out the front window and one view of you like the big one on the left, but small in a corner.
Back in 1991 I bought a Piper PA38 Tomahawk in Akron Ohio. I intended to take it to the UK for a Flying school in Shoreham Sussex. In Akron I was approached by a pilot who was mad enough to offer to fly it across the atlantic. I was smart enough to say NO. I probably saved his life.
Another fast 29 minutes riding along with you, Owen. I just can't get enough of your videos dude. You look so relaxed in the ferrying mode, I would imagine not having the pressure of flying the gulfstream or the Italian stallion it's kind of a break for you. I noticed when taking off in the Golden Eagle you were trimming down by hand, is that because the electric trim is perhaps too slow or too fast? Just curious about that. Anyway, looking forward to your next trek! have a great day, keep the wind at your back!❤❤❤❤
From a 25yr Beechcraft maintenance tech I'm loving all over that Bonanza it's Gorgeous!!!
Looks like an airplane i once help repaint. Nice paint scheme.
That's very exciting Owen being completely honest. I'm in the process of potentially getting to attend ATP flight school. I'm also in the process to see if the Air Force is a possibility for me. I also heard if I go the ATP route that there have been graduates who have gotten hired by the Air Force. There's also so many options to get to do in the aviation world as a pilot. I think it'd be cool to have my own aircraft in the future if I could.
Sounded like he was riding the stall horn from his radio. 😂
Wow you’re such a professional. Their planes are in good hands with you
Thank you!
Great video as always Owen! Beautiful airplanes. I bet on that 4 hour plus flight back that pee cup got full especially with all the bouncing up and down 😅. Keep them amazing videos coming.
salinas is my practice zone! i fly cessnas in there every week its a pretty awesome spot.
See this is what I want to do to build time. I’m not interested in the CFI route. Thanks for the video, Owen!
Awesome brother. We have a 421C and a Cherokee 6-300. I did all my instrument rating in Santa Teresa Las Cruces. Lived at Cielo Dorado for a year and a half so I know that area like the back of my hand. Great place to fly. Nice job nice video! You got a new subscriber in me!
Love this guy's radio work. I wish more pilots would do it like this, rather than the unintelligible speed talking that dominates the airwaves. Everything is clearly enunciated. Keep it up!!!
I still can't decipher exactly what the ground controller said when issuing the initial taxi clearance. "Golden Eagle six juliet juliet Salinas [??? sounds like "grounder wet" ???] three one taxi [??? possibly very slurred "via" ???] foxtrot alpha, cross runway two six at alpha and I have your clearance when you get there"
I just saw a Piaggio on the ramp at KBJC on Sunday, after completing my first student solo 😁
cessna 421c is a beautiful constant prop airplane!.
Love seeing your work brother 🛩️
Thank You for sharing the video! I really enjoyed the content, I'm a student pilot, & I too don't want to go the CFI route. I was thinking about ferry piloting as well. Again, Thanks...💯
Golfstream, Piaggio and Golden Eagle? That's 3, complex, very different aircraft to be checked on!! Then the turbo Beach! I never thought about it, but is there a limit you can have? I thought I vaguely remembered the military being 3? But that''s Military. Been awhile since I've been in a 421. I remember RAM geared engines w/~6 foot props then how quiet it was in the cabin!! And fast! You have had a remarkable and quite impressive career so far!! Thanks for sharing!! 8) Peace --gary
I think it's great you can fly so many aircraft. I like these trips
Thanks for bringing us along!!
Another great video, thanks for sharing - wish you would do a short intro to the plane when you fly a new one though, unless it's for privacy (of the owner) sake of course. Keep up the great work 👌🏽 both pilot wise and video production wise 💪🏽
Many thanks for sharing always a pleasure cheers from the UK 🇬🇧
Owen, I enjoyed that trip, there can be some long days on Ferry Work, however never two days the same. All the best from the U.K.
tHANKS FOR A NICE VIDEO ! A lot faster than my Navion....
PPL Student here, whats the benefit of just using IFR to pop up & then canceling and getting Flight following? Why not just file IFR all the way to your destination? Is it just so you can chose the fasest route?
If you want to fly vfr, but a low cloud ceiling prevents your desired altitude, you can fly ifr to get yourself above the clouds.
Flying VFR on top lessens the load on ATC as well as makes the route more direct.
ye always remembering ...like in lifes many endeavors..always someone else does it better..
i however must do what i can..ye those goals..
Well educated pilot smooth, calm and cool as a cucumber. Enjoying your videos.
Where did you learn to fly may I ask?
Cool couple of days, thanks for the ride!
What did the Phoenix controller mean by 13:06 "Prior to request, change your altitude"? I didn't understand that. ...and speaking as a new IFR pilot, I love your vids!
First plane i was let loose on after Mech's school
421C Golden Eagle (aka Blue Budgie)
New to this channel. Subscribed. Enjoyed this video very much.
Thanks for watching, got a lot of content on the way!
That audio is brutal.
Sounds like you’re flying a small UAS drone !
Old twin Cessna intercom. Nothing I can do
Always tough when you’re in the pattern and someone calls in on a 12 mile final, especially if you’re a student.
