I am very disappointed that Cameron’s film did not include the scene with the Chinese sailor being rescued by Officer Lowe. This is a true story and true stories and real people should be given precedence over fictional love stories included to sell tickets.

They did film the scene! it just didn't make it to the cut, it happens to most movies!

And that's why my film will include Fang Lang.

It has a lot to do with runtime and test screenings. I'd like a version with ALL of the deleted scenes because they all really work within the film and the actual history. I'd also like a version that excludes all the Jack and Rose bits. That would be interesting.

He said the way that Rose was rescued was inspired by Fang Lang, because he was picked up from the sea clinging to a wooden door

I’ve always been fascinated with the story of the eight Chinese sailors who travelled as steerage passengers on Titanic. If I remember correctly, they were employees of the Donald Line and were traveling to New York to take positions aboard their ship “Annetta.” Because of the coal strike in England, their previous ship was probably laid up, and since they really couldn’t afford to wait, they used what little money they had to book passage on Titanic because they would be able to find work in America. Two of the men died in the sinking, four found seats in the lifeboats and were accused of being cowards and stowaways (they probably weren’t), and one went down with the ship but managed to lash himself to a piece of flotsam until he was rescued by Officer Lowe’s boat 14. Edwardian-era Racism has a strong undertone in their story and the way they were treated. I hope the record can soon be set straight and give these six men the posthumous honor they deserve for being Titanic survivors.

I definitely agree with you. The story is fascinating. I'm hoping I can learn more about the Titanic in the future, as well as people who survived, famous or not.

      Agree.
Without prejudice, it is logical that the Chinese men had a relatively high survival rate because they were sailors/knew the sea.

However, the emotion of hate is not exclusive to people of the Western world.
Even amongst the Chinese, there are hatred for each other. Look at China and Taiwan, am I not right? 🤔

A month ago, I learned of a black man onboard the Titanic named Joseph Laroche. He was traveling with his pregnant wife and their two daughters. Joseph didn’t survive, but his wife and children did.

Do not forget the Scandinavians. I think there were also Armenians on board too. I know a lady whose uncle died on the Titanic. History is fascinating. One of my grandmothers was 32 when the Titanic sank and the other was born in 1912.

I went to the Titanic Ex. when it came to Toronto, there I purchased a book survivors stories and in it there was one mention of Chinese men in the lifeboat by one of the women but it was negative with the woman complaining about how the Chinese men refused to row the boat and instead just wanted to sit there and smoke cig's. At the time I didn't know about the multi-cultural third class so it surprised me that there were any none white people on board and as I learned more about this I realized that even today racism has such a strong effect on society and its view point even in here in Toronto the most multi-cultural city in the World. I can only imagine how hard it was for these brave men to have overcome this and manage to find a place in the boats.

Read 'Black Like Me' set in 1959, read it today in 2023. I swear I'm telling the truth; every sad pathetic encounter the author had in that book, I have an analogous experience to offer today from a Chinese Canadian experience. Sure, it varies in tone and extremity, but the contempt is well fueled and real. I swear it's true.

I have never been able to understand the discrimination against Oriental peoples. Thousands of years of the most exquisite culture and refinement. Perhaps Europeans felt threatened by a history in which they had no share.

Watched it. It's disappointing. Not the story, the storytelling. For one, the narrator subject in the film is bland and aloof, and the documentary is pedestrian. Could have been a better, even exciting, film from the POV of an actual Chinese filmmaker. This film is forced and becomes a confusing research project. Largely overlooked by viewers in China despite all the attempts poured into promote it. End the colonial world view now.

    • @reuvenknight1575
      @reuvenknight1575 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I guess you should complain to the actual Chinese filmmakers about why they didn't make a film about this. I think the piece you are missing is that there weren't a bunch of Chinese filmmakers out there wanting to make this documentary, so at that point you are just wanting the company to hire someone who is Chinese to present it or to re-film it or something which feels disingenuous and akin to tokenism. It's a documentary. It documents a process of finding information and figuring out what happened. It isn't a big budget movie or an art house project. Someone might do something like that with the information later, but this is about gathering the information to begin with. It feels like a confusing research project because it WAS a confusing research project. And the narrator is going to come off as bland and aloof if he's British.
The best way to end colonial world view is to support people from other countries and the documentaries they make. But don't blast the only guys who really looked into this and found information just because they aren't Chinese. Be glad someone actually looked into it, and hope that others look into it more now that we have more information and make a production from a Chinese POV.
