(Trina) our town has a free thrift store with a Christmas room. We have taken old, like new toys and decluttered holiday decorations for folks to "shop". It's also motivating to assist those in tough situations by decluttering items they have requested and passing them on. Thanks for the "took a header" story, mom!😂

My husband and I are in our early 60’s. He is a builder and we have moved many times over the years within the same town. Each time we have moved we have gotten rid of several things.
But it always accumulates quickly again.
The past few months I have gone through my closet and donated clothes, shoes handbags and etc.
But today I have cleared out about half of our attic where so much has been stored.
I called my daughter in law to come and look through to get anything she wanted and the rest I took to the Goodwill.
I plan to finish the attic within the next 2-3 days.
And again will have my daughter in law come and get what she wants.
She was thrilled and so was I .
I know once everything has been gone through in the attic, that the items I put aside to keep that I will go through again one more time.
It was so satisfying to declutter these items.
And as far as Christmas decor most of that fits in one box.
I decluttered most of that last year.
    Thanks for motivation!
    🙏❤️

One thing that has helped my husband de clutter Christmas decor ( he is way more into than me and came with way more of it than me) is that I keep showing him posts in our local "buy nothing" fb group of people requesting holiday decor that have left bad situations or have just been thrown curve balls by life but are still wanting to keep the holiday spirit for their families...knowing that you are helping kids have a Christmas makes us much happier to give...and when people ask for specific items it helps us focus on what to get rid of or maybe what we have multiples of kind of like a clutter scavenger hunt.

As long as you don't bread the gifting part and get yourself in trouble. 😂 I guess especially with sort of sentimental or pricy items...k owing who is getting them seems to help.

I organize a Christmas event every year through a local charity and we support a number of families. At least 3 of them last year asked us to buy them a Christmas tree because that was something they couldn't afford. We also gave them ornament kits to make with their kids so they had something to put on the tree. They sent us pictures of their decorated tree. It was so sweet!

I used to love Christmas as a child, but got involved in a religion that did not celebrate Christmas or other holidays for a number of years as an adult. My husband was not involved in this religion, but he stayed with me because he loved me so much! His actions were truly that of a true Christian and he was such a good example for me that my eyes were opened about the many errors in the other religion. I am so glad and happy that the beliefs of that cult have lost the hold on me and I can celebrate Christmas at last without guilt!

My mom moved into a new home 2019 and so that Christmas she went through and separated the ornaments by person and let us take whatever we wanted and then she picked a few for her to keep and got rid of the rest. We collected 1 ornament each year for 5 people so she had a lot of bins…. Also she let me come shop her stuff that she wasn’t putting out before she decluttered- I grabbed a few things I knew where I wanted to use them (I think just a kitchen towel and oven mit that I was planning to replace anyway) it worked out well for us each. My mom still has a ton of decor so I’m hoping to help her declutter more this year as she sees what she didn’t put out the last two years- and this year we are planning to help her decorate so maybe I can help her get rid of more!) she still has around 25 tubs of Christmas stuff, but it was closer to 32 in 2019 so that’s progress!

I pre-purged my Christmas stuff, but feel like I’ll definitely still find items I don’t need or love as I decorate! I pulled out thanksgiving decor yesterday and was able to decorate in under 5 mins from “hey grab the thanksgiving bin” to “wow that was efficient!” And then today I found a piece I put out yesterday that I decided I really don’t love or have a space for, so to the donate box it went!

Since my children are over 40 and all my grandchildren are out of school except one, we do not decorate our home as we once did. Giving away our Christmas items that were special to my children and grandchildren has helped de-clutter my Christmas stash but has given great joy to the children and grandchildren when they got the Christmas item that meant the most to them.

I spent 2 hours today going through ornaments, testing lights, checking tree toppers and every ornament for damage, sorting them into categories, rewrapping bead garland, going through every single gift bag, gift box, tissue paper, name tag and bow for quality control, color coordinated the keeps and came up with quite the declutter pile. Created a theme and have everything good to go. Totally worth it!

I agree with your mom when it comes to holiday decorating! Usually starting in fall, I bring out fall decor, very minimal, but I pack away in the empty fall boxes some everyday decor so we can enjoy the fall decor. When it is time to decorate for Christmas, I move the stored decor in the fall boxes to the now empty Christmas boxes and pack away fall. When I unpack decorations, I know what has not been used for a season or 2 and that happily gets donated. I have several boxes but happy to say it is all contained.

Your Mom is the most precious lady! Christmas decor is to the hilt in my childhood home. It's rather insane but it's not Christmas without it! We try ever year to get some things consolidated, organized better, or minimize the collections. But the overwhelm gets to Mom and we push it off another year. I understand the emotions dealing with loss at the holidays. My Dad's brother died of Hodgkin's the year before I was born and buried on Christmas. My grandfather passed away the day after our family celebration. He had finished chemo and was doing awesome. His poor heart just gave out. And for crying out loud, most of our family dogs cross rainbow Bridge in November. My Mom doesn't let the sadness take away from the joy of celebrating the birth of Jesus. She's like Mrs Claus lol my Dad has spent some years feeling sad about missing his brother and also feeling sad about not being able to give us all the things. We've always told him he was crazy for thinking that we didn't have enough! We always got plenty- more than we deserved (ok, I deserved it all but not my older sis LOL)!!!

I've moved around a lot and usually lived in small houses, so I've never had the space to store a lot of items that only get used at Christmas (e.g. whole sets of china, large decorations). Most of my decorating is focused on the tree - when I first moved into my own home, I could afford to buy a set of lights and a tree but had no money left for decorations, so the first year, I decorated with half a dozen mismatched decorations from my childhood and a bunch of pinecones sprayed gold and with ribbon loops glued onto them. Since then, every year I've added one new decoration, so my tree is now a visual reminder of so many people and places. Even though I've been collecting decorations for over 20 years, because they are small they still all fit into one box.
For the rest of the house, I mostly decorate with plants - amaryllis (hippeastrum) bulbs, cyclamen and other bulbs/plants that flower at Christmas. Once the flowers are over, they can go outside and be grown on, ready for next Christmas, so they don't take up houseroom all year round. I have a nativity set and a few Christmas tealight holders - like your mother, I put other decorations away when I bring these out, so the house doesn't get cluttered. I also make 'stained glass windows' using acetate and tissue paper to decorate our windows - these are so cheap to make that they can be thrown away after Christmas, or if I want to reuse them the next year, they don't take up any space laid flat on the bottom of the decorations box.

When we downsized for moving a little over a year ago, we got all of our Christmas decorations into one bin. The only things that don't fit into the bin are a wreath we acquired last Christmas and our tabletop tree. When we were in Israel 2 years ago, we bought olive wood decorations, so that's been our theme. A few sentimental decorations get left in the bin, but that's it.

I have been sorting my decor ahead of the season so I can take it to the thrift shop in time for others to see it. When I go to get out Valentine’s decor, I sort Easter and Spring decor, when I go to get out Fall, I sort Halloween and Christmas. The stores want it a few months ahead. Less holiday decor has made me love decorating again. Also I take away the year round decor at Christmas.

Yay for the mention of @A Hoarder’s Heart - decluttering things when it truly feels “right” emotionally to do so has been so important in me making continual progress with decluttering, especially sentimental things 😊 no bad decisions = no regrets = keeping the momentum = lots more stuff in the long-run being let go of 💕✨
great video, a reshuffle and pick-up looks so less overwhelming, hopefully making the decorating much more enjoyable 😁

I try to get holiday decor on sale and take very good care of it. I remember what yr. I purchased things. Some I still love after 25 or more years. Being married 52 yrs. we accumulated a lot. We moved from a two story to a ranch and we got rid of a ton of decor, furniture, etc. I am 72 and last yr. I treated our home with new lighted swags for our two back windows and my theme was farm things. black and white, red truck with tree boxes and our old tree decorated. It wasn't a need but it made me feel young again. Merry Christmas,

One of the best Christmas hints I've ever gotten. Wrap a big box, I use a box that copy paper comes in, with Christmas paper. Wrap top separate from bottom. Put regular every day decor into box leaving room in your home for Christmas decor. Put the box holding the every day decor under the Christmas tree at the very back. Beautiful box. Easy to get to after Christmas. You could even use the same box year after year without rewrapping. I make sure to use a big beautiful bow and the box or boxes become Christmas decorations. Double duty.

I converted one of my bedrooms into a guest room. I use the closet to store all my seasonal decor. It is easier than getting it out of the garage. I declutter east season as I put away things as well as when I get the new season out. I always have a donate box in the room.

I very much enjoyed this video. Even though my Christmas decorations are organized, there is always room to donate some. I always decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving, however this year my son and family(including my two young grandkids) are moving out of the country the first week of December. I have been debating whether to decorate early and now….a big thank you for giving me permission to do so. Families evolve and sometimes it is sad, but for me, thank goodness for FaceTime 🎄

My kids really helped thin out the Christmas ornaments and that will make taking down the tree much easier. The tree itself looks less cluttered! We kept what really mattered to each child. I also limit how much we have to three, specific, large, red and green containers. I only bought a couple of new things this year that I thought were super cute (Big Lots is my new Pier One!) and we will have the space for those. Now, if we could just minimize the gifts! Lol
I’m like your mom. Other decor gets put away to make room for holiday decorations.

Last year I was fairly new to decluttering and wasn't ready to tackle Christmas decor. But this year I went ahead with it. I decluttered clear glass ornaments which my fantasy self would have liked to craft into snowballs or potpourri balls, lots of flat wrap paper because I am going to gift bags (easier), and many glass ornaments which weren't really appealing to me anymore and had no room for on the tree. I also got rid of other Christmas decor I just wasn't using anymore because I had been adding to my snowman collection and using that exclusively.
As an aside, I had tried to sell my very full, very wide Christmas tree a few years ago at a yard sale because I was running out of room in our livingroom and wanted a skinny tree. Because I wasn't able to sell it, and had nothing to lose, I decided to give it a 'haircut.' I took some heavy duty wire cutters to the ends of the branches (the branches are permanently hinged into the trunk of the tree), and shortened the branches until the base of the tree was about 2 ft around, and went up the tree tapering branches to give it the right shape. It worked and I was happy with the result. And because the tree is smaller in size, it's lighter weight when transferring it from the closet, and it takes less ornaments to fill it out.
I was able to declutter my Fall and Christmas things soon after they began showing up in stores so that I could either sell at consignment or donate when people were already looking for new items. It's such a wonderful feeling to get my collection down to a more manageable size and lessen the guilt about not using all I had.

Mom LOVES Christmas because of the hope and joy connected with Christ - she will SEE those she lost again - and even though she may not connect the dots up front - the back of her brain has done the connecting for her...and she can keep it light and not so sobering and emotional.
