    It is SO refreshing to see an online influencer who lives normally. I am SO tired of seeing these million dollar homes bought by influencers.I mean, who really needs a 3,000 plus square foot home?! It's totally unrelatable and quite tone deaf... especially in this economy. I'm glad to see you content with what you have and working to make it your own. Been following you for years and decluttering along the way. It has been a huge help for me and helping other family members. :)

      Different people have different desires. Maybe 3000 sq ft is needful for a large family or family gatherings. Don’t limit others with your choke point.

      Follow the less known, smart TH-camrs. They all have normal, regular sized houses and their own personal style and values are different from all those mainstream, famous ones.

      @@singerjo5791 I'm not limiting anyone's choices. Just maybe bringing attention to need vs want. If someone chooses to work towards more material goals, that's their decision to do so. I just find it off putting and unrealistic for most of us.

    Overwhelmed with laundry today. How are the kids drawers full, dirty hamper full and 2 loads of their clean clothes to put away?? Grandma, that's how :) I keep pausing the video to get rid of more clothes. This video just helped me lessen the clothes inventory to almost half. More to go. Thank you Dawn ❤

      You can do it!! I just had to buy my daughter a new wardrobe because I’ve stopped getting her SOOO much that now that the season has changed she literally has ZERO to wear. But she grows so fast (and wears a school uniform during the week) I decided this time I’m doing a “capsule wardrobe” for her. 2 short sleeve shirts, 2 long sleeve shirts, 2 sweaters and 1 hoodie. 1 dress and 4 pairs of pants (one of which are comfy sweats). They all go together. I bought a size too large this time, in hopes it will get her through to spring/summer. I can’t tell you the absolute calm and comfort it gives me to see her closet. So many exciting outfits to build, but not overflowing or overwhelming at all. Now… to do MY closet! ❤❤❤

    I love my minimalist home!
    It is so freeing!!
    And It is so peaceful here.
    When we moved last year, it was alot easier than if we had alot of stuff…
    My new house is easy to clean and maintain.
    It is only 1500 square feet.
    My adult daughters tease me, all in fun, that I am a minimalist.
    But I laugh with them and own it!!
    It is a great way of life!
    Take care🦋💗

    Having hoarder tendencies, I can remember going to a friends home yrs ago, not knowing or understanding what minimalist was, my anxiety went through the roof because i’m thinking ‘Where is all their stuff, it looks like I’m sitting in a motel’
    NOW with learning it’s ok to let go and having less is best, my home is having less and less each week and I’m loving it.
    In all honesty I never believed I would be ok to get rid of things and really look at what I’m bringing into my home.
    I will always struggle with hoarding tendencies but I’m in my 60’s and you truely can teach an old dog new tricks.

    I’ve watched my anxiety dwindle over the past year, and I too attribute a lot of it to minimalism and simplifying our life! I brought a small box to our local donation center today and thought to myself how far I have come since dropping off carloads at a time. Now it’s just maintenance and I’m so thankful. ❤

    Looks nice! I started "cleaning out" back in 2011 after my dad died. I don't want my family to have to "clean out" our stuff... in the meantime, cleaning out & clearing the decks gave me a goal & an ongoing commitment. Recently achieved that goal!! 13 years later, I'm very glad my house is MUCH EASIER to maintain!! And, I no longer feel guilty having a cup of coffee while watching the birds at our feeder!! ♡

  • @nicollepratt8421
    @nicollepratt8421 2 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

    It’s absolutely beautiful!! It looks like an air bnb. You are aspirational for me. As I go through moving out of a nearly 9k square foot house to (I know you’ll think this is still too big) 5300 sq feet, while going through all of my mother’s possessions (she passed in January 2023). I put your videos on to inspire me and encourage me and I can’t thank you (and Cas from clutterbug) enough. I am so excited to start my new life!! The moving van comes tomorrow to get the furniture. I am blessed that I have been able to move slowly- verrrry slowly over the past couple months- and therefore I can run a box or two over at a time. My rule is that I have to love it and I have to know where it’s going to live. I am an artist so my home will not be as peaceful and perfect as yours looked, but it WILL be pared down. I’m estimating I’m leaving 60-70% of the STUFF here behind. And it feels GREAT!! Thank you, Dawn and god bless you and your family 🩷❤️🩷

A new benefit, we have changed our home personal insurance do to there is not that much to replace. Saving us $104 a year. We went thru each room and figure out what would we really replace. To be truthful no much. LOL

    @noreenp.9858 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +10

    What I’ve learned by watching your videos is that declutterring doesn’t happen overnight. I agree that too much stuff adds to our stress. Since I retired in May I’ve been declutterring and organizing. I know at some point I’ll have to redo certain areas because I need to declutter some things in layers. What I mean is that I just can’t get rid of 70% of my wardrobe at once. First it’s too overwhelming to do it all at once and it is easier to go back to smaller amounts each time I do it. I probably won’t ever be a minimalist like you but I know there’s a lot that I can do without.

    I love minimal houses. It doesn’t look weird at all. I love looking at houses for sale online just to see the pictures and the most visually pleasing ones are the ones that have no belongings in them.
    The 2nd most visually pleasing ones are the ones that just have the basic furniture and everything else hidden away.

    Dawn, you are so motivating! I have been on a minimalist journey for the past few years and we continue to downsize so that makes it easy but then I have a couple favorite TH-camrs that talk about all the new holiday decor, etc and I just want to go buy it then I click over and watch minimalist videos and that takes care of it. I don’t need that extra stuff!!

  • @gwenellison5386
    @gwenellison5386 4 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +10

    I'm not a minimalist, but I think I'm minimal-ish. I've decluttered about 80% of my stuff and my place is so much easier to keep up now. I think your place looks great and it's about what I'm striving for as I keep decluttering. Some of your ideas over the last few years really helped me. One small thing that really set me free was reducing linens. We have two towels per person plus 4 extra for guests as our place is small and I will never likely have more than 2 people here as guests overnight. Being able to throw ALL of our towels into one load of laundry is a game changer.

      I am not a minimalist either nor I want to be one. I am actually a Maximalist. I am just organizing my house to be more efficient while getting rid of stuff that is not needed or wanted any longer. You can be at a happy medium too.

    • @gwenellison5386
      @gwenellison5386 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      @vaderladyl absolutely agree. I have things that are just for decoration, but they mean something to me. I had been bordering on hoarding before so I really needed to go through and let go of a lot. I also had to downsize from a 3 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom apartment. Stuff had to go so I could fit comfortably in my place.

  • @stowie7733
    @stowie7733 3 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา +8

    Thank you!! You (and Dana) were the first TH-camrs I watched about decluttering and in my first round of decluttering I got rid of 50-60% of my stuff (took me 10 weeks). I then moved into my forever home and got rid of another 20%. You have continued to be an inspiration to me through the years and I never stop learning from you! Clothes and books were the hardest and I’ve reduce both by 50% each! I’m ready to go through my home once again and I know I will have more to declutter. Thanks again!

    Dawn, you speak of the confidence boost that decluttering has given you and I want to say it is the gift that keeps giving. When that in turn inspires others to tap into their own boosted confidence, it becomes such a force for tangible good. I have long since crossed that divide from feeling like "I can't" to KNOWING that "I can" and it makes so much more room for love and goodwill. The best thing I learned is that I don't even have to do decluttering perfectly, the same good news ensues just from starting small and letting in the good feelings of achievement by inches - progress, not perfection - and it is really amazing how much it colors my outlook. I smile more, and look for ways to brighten someone else's day as my own day has brightened. Thank you for being such a champion of showing time and again how decluttering can let in the love.

But the shelves! Oh my! I decluttered/threw out so much stuff (and rehomed a sizable box to the garage! That way, I could store ALL of my cleaning products in one spot! Your floor plan is ideal for 4 children/2 adults. A child will walk into the hall to complain about something/one, but is less likely to walk down stairs and around the corner to do so. That one probably unintentional thing promotes children working out their own problems with their sibs. 😊

    I think your home is very tidy & calm. I thrive in a clutter-free environment so a low inventory appeals to me. Definitely not a minimalist (yet lol) but I love my much simplified home. Great, great video!

    I find your home average sized and average amount of furniture/ furnishings for a family of 6.
    I'm in Australia and grew up in a family of 6. My childhood home had only one bathroom, the laundry was outside. Three bedrooms: parents, 3 girls in one room. My brother had his own bedroom because he was the only boy.
    A small wardrobe and dresser shared with my 2 sisters.
    Now in my own home with my own family, l have more room with a guest bedroom and the spare smallest bedroom turned into a growlery.
    However the furniture is just the right amount for the spaces / rooms to function and be comfortable in my home.
    Closed storage is the KEY to a visually uncluttered home.
    I declutter 4 times per year (seasonally) when the pink charity bag is in my letterbox. It takes half an hour to declutter and fill a charity bag. All up 2 hours annually for decluttering my entire 4 bedrooms home with open plan kitchen/dining/loungeroom.

      What is a growlery?

    • @mariastathopoulos744
      @mariastathopoulos744 49 นาทีที่ผ่านมา

      @@francespettigrew9646 Charles Dickens introduced the Growlery in his novel, Bleak House.
      The master of the manor had a small room that he called the Growlery. It is where he'd disappear to when he was in a frustrated mood. A hide away. When the character left the Growlery, he was in a calmer state of mind.
      My teen son has Autism. Our growlery is a low sensory space, walls painted woodland brown. Cave vibe. It has a slim tall window, an olive green upholstered rocking chair for my son, a round side table and a chocolate brown velvet tub chair for me. A tall floor lamp with an amber globe for warm soft lighting in the evening.
      My son has his favourite books on a lowline timber bookshelf.
      So when he's in a grumpy mood he can go to the growlery, read quietly or rock his dark mood away.
      We even use the room just to sit and talk.

    Love the way your house looks!
    The items in your home seem like normal things families keep on hand.
    I struggle with having few closets, no basement, and a garage that cannot hold much of anything due to heat and humidity.
    What would you do if you did not have a basement, nor the angular closet, nor the large entryway closet?
    How would you handle storage of those items?

    Dawn Your house looks beautiful now 😊 . I remember when Tom knocked the kitchen and the basement stairs out 😮. The only slight criticism I have is that the kids will need bigger bedrooms as they get older it seems a waste to have the generous guest room lying mostly unused but thats just my opinion x . I am currently doing the " Swedish death method" at the age of 63 in order to clear 50 % of my stuff so that my kids dont have to be burdoned with it .

      I’m sure Dawn and Tom will make use of the extra room (that they said they’re using as a family room now) if they decide they need it as the kids get older. It’s obviously not a problem to have the kids sharing for now or they would’ve done something different.

    It was interesting to see thru your home. It is so important to see an example of what a minimal home could look like.
    I am decluttering a little bit at a time, everyday. However if I declutter a closet or a cupboard I don't feel satisfied with the decluttering because when I close the doors on these areas I can no longer see what I have done. I guess I am exceedingly visual. When my kitchen, master bathroom and guest bathroom were reno-ed, I decluttered as I emptied rooms and decluttered again when putting items back. But it is all behind closed doors and I don't feel any joy. No matter, I will continue to declutter. But do any other people feel this way? I have done decluttering in my more open areas to offset the behind closed doors but still......
    I do know that my home will never get to your level of minimal but that is okay because everyone is different.
    Well better end this rant.
    I do very much enjoy your channel. Your advice and tips are excellent. Till the next video.💕🤗
