I've started my minimalist journey this year. I knew Christmas was going to be a challenge because I have 30 years of accumulated decor. I brought down everything and only put out my favorites. It's very calming not having Christmas decor everywhere and in every room. I gave an extra tree to a friend and sold a bunch on marketplace for basically nothing just to get it out of the house. I was in Hobby Lobby today and people were in full blown Christmas mode filling their carts. I only bought two ornaments for gifts and felt so proud of myself.

I am not a minimalist. What I do is to put away any daily ornaments and replace it with Christmas ornaments. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. My bedroom is normally decorated in teals and aqua shades. I didn't want the regular reds and greens in there. So last year, I went to resale shops and looked for table-top decorations that I liked that had whites, blues and creams. This way when I wake up, I don't feel that this room loses the quieter feel that I established.

The Nester (aka Myquillyn Smith) has great advice to Winterise your house first, then add Christmas decorations. Winter lasts for the season, but Christmas is only a few weeks. She also says to decorate with your eyes last. Use your other senses first. Smell, taste, sounds, what you touch. She talks to Kendra Adachi on The Lazy Genius podcast about it.
Now to flip that on its head and Summer-ise our home as we are in Australia!

Pre-lit Christmas tree lights usually stop working when the tree gets squished back into the box or bag. After decluttering we got a new pre-lit tree that we can put into the closet still standing. We take off the ornaments and throw a flat twin sheet over it. It has still been lighting for 7 years now.

I finally gave up on incandescent, but they are still my favorite. I switched to fairy lights on my tree. It is totally overloaded with about 1200 lights, but it's nice not to see thick wires, it's cheaper to run ⚡, and they all work on one remote. I've crushed them down in the tree for the past 3 years for storage now and have yet to blow a string. Would definitely recommend trying them out. I do have them zip tied and separated by section for easy assembly and tear down.

I worked on it for a few weeks and boxed up donations and put in my trunk right away. I did wait to donate until end of Oct when places start accepting Christmas decor but it was out of the house. Starting to decorate today and it is a joy and breeze to find everything in each designated bin and with the clutter and excess gone. Dawn has changed my life. I haven't decorated yet for Christmas. The plan was to get that done during my 4 day Thanksgiving vacation. It's Sunday afternoon and it hasn't happened yet, it might still happen today. When my kids moved out of the house, we started rotating who hosts the various holiday meals. At that time, my husband and I brought out ALL of our decorations and let the kids pick what they wanted. The decorations that I have used the past few years fit in one small drawer in my living room and the tree is stored in a sweater box in my craft room. The 2' tree that I use holds ornaments made by my high school biology teacher and by my father. My father taught at the same school and our families were friends. The redware ornaments from my biology teacher were our Christmas Cards from them over the years. My father made hand tooled leather goods and I turned the leather jewelry he made into ornaments. The tree skirt is some crochet work created by my great, great, great grandmother.

For me, when it comes to seasonal decor, LESS IS MORE. When a space is decorated to the hilt, not only is it a lot of work (hang, clean, store, etc.), it's also visually overwhelming -- which, for me, detracts from the enjoyment. When I put out just a few fave items, I get the best of both worlds: a warm, festive yet relaxing sanctuary.

We (meaning ME--my husband doesn't really want to be involved in it) never decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving. We've been minimizing for almost seven years, and we're down to two medium-sized bins, a tree in a box, and a wreath bag! (We retired to our smaller, forever home in 2017, and despite bailing out a lot before the move, we have steadily weeded out even more Christmas decorations each year. Most of what we have left we've had for DECADES--mostly sentimental stuff.) Once in a while, I get something charming for the tree or table, but mostly I get scented candles, etc., that give us the scent memories that make us think of Christmases past, when our parents were still here & the kids were young. It's amazing how much seasonal scents bring a rush of memories to mind!

Then I just store the entire tree in a storage bag in the basement until the next year. It takes five minutes to unbag the tree, fluff the branches and plug in. Done! I have streamlined household decorations also. I love your idea about using color in a zigzag pattern. That makes sense.

I have also struggled with the desire to do more decor for all holidays as my Mom did, which I loved and enjoyed, but don't feel like I have the bandwidth, storage, or capacity to keep all the little hands off of everything during the year. So I only decorate for Christmas, and even then, we keep a gate around the Christmas tree with so many fragile ornaments and there are a few handmade tabletop ornament trees I don't put out because the kids will constantly pull it apart. So looking forward to the times I can put it all out and not be like a watch dog on all the decor. It really cheers me up to see the holiday decor around the house.

I have some simple bedroom decorating ideas:
Little tiny lights with the battery pack - you can string or put in a glass container.
A small tree 🌲 that already has lights. IKEA has some nice ones.
IKEA also has some nice thin, simple garlands with lights so you could try one of those.
You could have just a couple of things that would give you that special holiday cozy feeling.
Perhaps a poinsettia. The lighter colors are more calming. Or, paper whites…
    Perhaps a candle 🕯 if it’s safe.
I would say, if you happen to find the perfect pillows, it wouldn’t hurt.
Even one thing could give your room that special glow.

Two years ago, we stopped taking down our artificial tree. We simply turn off the lights, leave the ornaments on it and then wrap a pair of floor-length curtain panels around the tree. It sits in a corner of our dining room (that was formerly our living room) that we have never really used much, so it works out perfectly for us. Our kitchen and our wooden deck off the kitchen is where we and our family and friends hang out. And the surprising thing is no one has even asked, "What's that triangular-shaped thing under the curtain?".... LOL I kid you not. It has proved to be such a time-saver not to have to deal with moving furniture, messing with the branches, stringing the lights, hanging the ornaments, and all that stuff. On occasion, after removing the curtain panels, I have moved a few of the ornaments around, but other than that, it remains a done deal. My best friend was pretty much the only person who has noticed it, but that's simply because when she comes over, she and I sit at the dining room table where it's a bit cooler (she gets hot flashes) and the chairs are more comfortable for her. Her legs are too short for our tall kitchen bar stools. It has now become a running joke about keeping the tree up. Just last week, she told me she was going to set her tree up on her next day off from work (which was yesterday). And I replied, "That sounds great. I think we will set ours up, too." We both had a good laugh over that. I and my husband are both in our 70's and there's just no logical reason for setting up the tree and taking it down every 11 months. My husband's aunt used to keep hers on a wooden mechanic's dolly and when Christmas was over, she would grab the rope attached to the dolly and pull it into a huge closet in her living room. She would then throw a large bed sheet over it to keep the dust off. No one was the wiser. So, I figured it worked for her, it can work for us, even though we don't have a closet that large. This coming Thursday, I will unveil the tree, flip on the lights, and we will all go, "Ahhhhh....How pretty!" 😆

Hi, I have followed you for a few years now. Got rid of 50% of our belongings. Yep! Six months ago I went through all the xmas decorations. And decided to give away the tree (we used it for 10 years and twinkle lights still working and then shipped it together with decorations to the Philippines to a family without a tree. They have had it up since September and all the people in the street just love it. I then found another family who did not have a tree last year in my neighborhood so I gave them one of our smaller trees with decorations for them to decorate. So what did we do. We had a family meeting and decided to order a new one off Amazon with new decorations. We simplified it to a more adult decore. We are out of the kiddy season. We plan to have it up and my eldest daughter has invited her adult friends for drinks and eats. And yes doing a xmas date dunbt cake (everyone loves it). , charcuterie boards etc. Move with the seasons of life.

When our sinks get backed up, I always use the wet dry vac and it sucks out what's creating the clog. It is almost always the bathroom sink that gets clogged. Hair and gunk are usually the culprits. We need to purchase one of those air compressors.
Because we have four house cats, are adopting two rescue dogs (making it a total of three dogs in our home) and we are still trying to declutter the house, we are not planning on decorating. Last year we mostly stayed focused on the True meaning of Christmas without the decorations. We had each other, the Lord and our home and furbabies. It was one of the best Christmases ever.

You can make Christmas throw pillows from double sided placemats, even the ones from Dollar Tree. Make a small opening in one side and stuff them with fiberfill torn in small pieces to avoid lumpiness from an old worn out pillow. Use hot glue to close the opening and you have very inexpensive throw pillows. They are so cheap you can donate after the holidays so you don't have to store them. OR choose placemats in colors that can be used for several holidays. Example: red solid or red patterns is good for Christmas, Valentines, Patriotic or just as a pop of red in a room with red accents year round.

All my pre-lit trees are still working I’ve had them for 16 years. I got them at Home Depot Black Friday special. They have them every year. Declutter Christmas decorations a few years back and I put out exactly what I have. The house is festive and everyone enjoys it. 🌲 ❤

@@TheMinimalMom that’s ok - the prize is getting to see your videos and learn from you :) our simplified house is such an amazing blessing - and the reason I’m able to sit and put my feet up when my baby is napping, instead of needing to tidy up ;)

That made me cry that you have raised that much for the well already! Amazing!

I'm so proud of myself for decluttering my holiday bins! I'm down to one Fall/Halloween bin and one Christmas bin!
I only decorate the living room, and we have an advent wreath on our dining room table.

I decluttered all of mine in 2018 and I have never regretted it. Everyone else freaks out about how much they have to do extra for Christmas and I'm like, week off with hubs sounds great to me! I sometimes buy gifts if my loved ones want or need something, but that's something I'd do all year.

Just ordered the beautiful cookbook and it is so fun to look through the recipes that you have beautifully displayed in my digital download. Also so happy to contribute and donate for Dorothy and her community! God bless you Dawn and your family! Happy Thanksgiving everyone!❤❤
