The latest range of MG's have gone completely under my radar. However the wife is looking for a new car and suggested we look at the MG ZS. I came across your video and others on you tube and we sort of came to the conclusion that as most of her journeys are local the HS plug in could be a better option especially as the interior space is larger. Visited the local dealership and to be honest was blown away by the quality of the finish especially the interior and how well it drove - ok its never going to be a hot hatch but as every day comfortable transport it wins hands down. Suffice to say we have ordered one. I can understand why MG are on a roll in the UK and they also appear to have even more interesting models arriving over the next couple of years. Thanks for your great down to earth review.
It’s amazing how many people say this or think they’re not fit for purpose, MG have come on in leaps and bounds in the last few years, comprehensive warranties, leafing tech and prices that make you stop and look. The HS PHEV is likely my favourite MG, it’s quick, very well trimmed and full of tech, looks the part too, thank you for reaching out and keep us posted. *B
I’ve got one on hire through work at the moment. It wasn’t my choice of car but it’s amazed me how high quality the interior is and the drive is great too. I’m tempted to get one myself now!

I’m looking at purchasing the MG HS Hybrid PHEV here in South New Zealand, so a big thumbs up for your review. I’ve been a Toyota man and drove the diesel 4 door ute as a Rural Mail contractor driving 600,000 - 800,000kg - but after taking the MG for a test drive I’m very impressed indeed. Comparing it to the Rav4 2.5L PHEV, the 1.5L MG Hybrid has as much up and go and far better economy and comfort than any Toyota I’ve ever driven. I have Cerebral Palsy so my right side has better function/ability so the MG layout suites me far better plus I can still stow my manual wheelchair in the boot/rear without too much effort. Arohanui guys.

Thanks again for the great review. Test drove and placed an order this afternoon for one in pearl black with red interior. You were right about it still having some power in ev mode with a double press of the accelerator. Even quicker with the engine running but not needed for most city driving. Very impressed. 0% finance too! Thanks.

Thank you Mike, no, it offers ev from standstill upto at least 60mph in our experience.
I own an MGHS PHEV living here in Thailand where it costs the equivalent of about £33,000, but that included a free wall charger and five years free servicing. Most of my journeys are reasonably local so the majority can be driven in EV mode - the result being that in about 1500 km’s I’ve averaged the equivalent of more than 200 mpg!! The car is very comfortable, very quick (even in EV mode)and of course very quiet in EV mode. Overall, it’s a great car for the money.
That’s some mpg, these are superb value and offer peace of mind with the warranty, thank you Dan
MPG on EV mode?
What I said was that most of my journeys are in EV mode, just a few longer ones requiring the use of the petrol engine to complete the journey. At the time of writing the total distance covered was about 1500 km’s and the petrol used was the equivalent of more than 200 mpg - now at more than 4000 km covered, the mpg figure is over an astonishing 300 mpg.
I think it's unfair to use EV mode but calculate mpg. If you talk about the cost per mile it's OK including the batteries charging and fuel cost.
Well that’s what car manufacturers do when they quote the official mpg rating for their cars - it would be difficult for me to calculate the cost of electricity consumed in charging the car, but obviously that can’t be ignored. All I’m saying is that if you can complete most of your journeys in EV mode, the use of petrol is considerably reduced compared to a regular ICE car.

Hi great review, I'm thinking about buying this car but i've read online that mpg is way lower than they say. About 40 instead of 160. I know you said in the video you guys are getting a 100 mpg but after a few months is this still the mpg number you will get? Thank you for your input!
It depends on how you drive, we saw well over 90 pretty much all the time when in hybrid mode with charge, bear in mind I don’t do economical driving, thank you Joris *B

One of the best reviews of a car I've watched. I've been intrigued by the HS phev and your review has put a massive positive for me. I do have a question. How does the audio system sound? I'm a connoisseur where audio is concerned. Is the system lacking in any frequency?
Thank you Syd, it’s an impressive SUV, the stereo is decent enough, nice mid, decent treble, Bass is what you expect, it doesn’t have the range of say Bose, but it’s not bad. Go and test one and hear it first yourself - back in the 90s I had competition systems Alpine v12, Infinity Kappa, Kenwood and RF Punch so I do get what you mean *B
@@PlanetautoUK blimey you did sound off competitions in the 90's? I did semi pro systems in the late 80's and all the 90's. My choices were Alpine, Infinity, Rockford Fosgate and Sony. 4 of my last 6 cars have been Lexus with Mark Levinson systems so like you quality matters. Seems like a nice car. I bought fully electric MG5 last week and I'm very impressed with it. We also have Outlander PHEV for towing caravan but I think this mg HS would be a great replacement ☺️

@@PlanetautoUK you’re very welcome! I’m living here in Bangladesh and visited the MG showroom a couple of times. Today was the first time I lay my hands on the PHEV and went on a test drive. Wowwww!!! It’s just astonishingly quick and very well balanced. Brakes great too. Overall a super duper vehicle.

What I like about the Hybrid is in city driving instead of the mpg going up it goes up right up 200mpg thats brilliant.

Hey both, great view. How noisy is the cabin when moving? It sounded as if there was a fair amount of road noise, however this might have been the audio from the camera. Does this support fast charging?
Hello, thank you - no it’s rather refined very little noise in ev mode, our Rode mic takes no prisoners, no fast charging like most PHEVs, hope this helps A Bit *B

It’s got decent mid range, easy to use - for me though could do with more speakers and subs, overall though pretty good.
The model they sell in Thailand comes with a Bose sound system, so pretty good - only downside is that it has a sub-woofer in the boot so looses the space where the charging cable would go.

Hmm, we’re gutted we didn’t get the 150mpg as mentioned by Parker’s and Auto Express, if you tell us the dealer then we’ll let MG know, driving at around 30mph, it’s very easily achievable, if it’s reading low, reset it by holding the button on the steering wheel.

I'm almost certainly getting one of these - it's reserved at the moment. Bit confused about mpg. Big difference between 40 and 130. I may be being thick but in what mode / type of journey will see it get the higher figures??

We managed around 100mpg plodding around local villages, around 50mpg at around 70mph and we tended to do short journeys on electric, and hybrid on longer ones, to increase mpg, hope that’s a bit clearer, thank you Nick

Test drove one the other day and it was very impressive. Strange lag in power when car reached 50mph in EV mode?
Yes they are. and as we mentioned in the driving section you get to a certain speed I think it was 60 and it runs out of puff then you floor it again and it propels like it did from launch, we found this only when floored, thank you
Will we get the charging cables which we can use in shopping centers?

Really interested in this car due to it's towing capacity of 1500kg and its ability to run on electric only for short 30 mile journeys, I just need to know what sort of tank range you get on a long motorway journey? Then I can half it to get an idea of what range I would get when towing a caravan. I don't like the idea of filling up whilst towing unless absolutely necessary so would be grateful to get an idea of how far I can travel on a full tank.
We’ll see what we can find out, we travelled around 700m in that week.

Can you use EV while heating or air conditioning is on? Or is it that when we turn on heating only the petrol works and ev is of no use?

What's the ev mode like? Does it perform well? If I accelerate a little quickly will it automatically fire up the engine? Currently a leaf owner. Looking to do close to all my local miles in ev mode.
Hello, no it’ll take decent acceleration in ev mode, as long as you have charge, to use both floor it, I managed to do a lot of driving in ev, thank you *B

I’m still considering whether Ogo plug in or full ev on next purchase. I’m leaning more to ev but non OSP at home isn’t the best, although I did find a company that installs pavement plug. I’m not sure what council permissions would be so need to do some more research on that. Before deciding. Keep up the good work guys.
Yes, it’s a big decision, phev suit certain lifestyles etc and ev’s others - we’ve heard recently that legislation is changing for the better on pavement chargers however it likely depends on local councils, choose wisely Lennie, great chatting.

@@PlanetautoUK thanks for your prompt reply The wife uses a small mobility scooter when she goes shopping so she would transfer into the seat by edging backwards into it then swinging her legs into it. We tried a Kona Electric and it was good but reading the latest news and they are stopping selling them in South Korea, for that reason dont want to get a car that may be dropped at any time. Will take her for the 2 hour drive to perth to try one out. I have driven the HS and liked it so fingers crossed
It might be the right fit! It’s got nice wide opening doors and I found the ride height worked well (not too high, not too low) Just bear in mind that there is no grab handle above the drivers door. *A
How do I change the dashboard display? I mean the speed display etc.

We always do, before a journey, it ensures it’ll actually increase, especially upto 40 or so

Went for a test drive the other day...loved the car, but found the rear view mirror and associated windscreen camera area a huge blindspot, and was constantly looking under it when pulling up at intersections...anyone else found this ?

I agree, seems ridiculous to mount it so low when there is no need. I live in a rural area with tight blind bends and same here, always looking underneath it.
@@rachelrobinson4923 Hi Rachel...just noticed on one of the pics it looks like the mirror is adjustable in two spots, one at the mirror itself and also where it attaches at the windscreen...maybe it can be adjusted to be a lot higher...could you have a look ?

The only thing that confuses me about this car is, it has a almost 15kWh useable battery, so how can it only do 32 miles on EV power? that's 2m/kWh..surely around town you could get 40+ miles in EV mode..?

@@PlanetautoUK hi I've seen alot of your videos with no issues. I thought it was my TH-cam so I closed the app and restarted it same issue. Other videos are fine, it may be an issue with the editing process you may have used. The quick cuts are very disorientating. Tbh I've been waiting for this specific review for a long time, quite disappointed 😞
We’ve had 370 views, not one comment regarding playback, this is without a doubt down your tech sadly, the fact you mention scenes and sharp cuts, the production is no different to our existing videos, and as always has been produced in Adobe premiere and exported using H264 at 1080p 29.97fps - we’d recommend using another device with a stable connection of at least 10mbps.
@@PlanetautoUK hi I've tried it on other devises, same issue. I'm guessing it's just a question of personal preferences. Your commentary and description on the car is great. But what I'm commenting on is the quick cuts which seem excessive.
@@mcjqjfje we need to look into this, if you can give us some time markers as all are overlays at around 3 seconds bar one quick cut at 0.5 second. Jumping from scene to scene is very different to quick cuts.
