Drawing comb is crucial around here too. I also like to start with 10 foundation and drop to 9 once they are drawn out. Having the 10 initially helps keep the comb tight and uniform with no burr comb.
Kamon hi make yourself a cloth veil, you can use silicone if you can't sew, you can work your bees with veil flipped over hat, see eggs a whole lot easier, cooler and if bees become unfriendly you just pull veil down ,tuck in to shirt, preferably with buttons so you can give it a little twist to pull through between buttons. for beekeeping beginners save that beesuit for when you know the bees are going to be nasty. commercial beekeepers wear suits because they have to work hard and fast and more likely to end up with nasties trying to sting them on the face, and any place where ordinary clothing touches skin. i was working on extremely aggressive hive recently, got about 6 stings on head, they got through air vents on straw hat, a lesson learned the hard way
Hi, we add a tsp of pollen substitute per quart to our 1:1. This way they get the protein and avoid shb issues. Since the pollen sub dulls the sugar water we add feeding stimulant and the chug it down good

Hey Kamon, check out the 7 gallon water container at walmart. They work great for feeding syrup. They have a spout and during dearths bees cant get into them.

Great video Kamon, here in Charlotte, NC area I had to put pollen traps on my Apimaye hives. So much pollen is coming in they were getting pollen bound!

Approximately how many grams of pollen patty do you put for each of the three boxes colonies you showed, and after how long do you need to add another patty. Always amazed by your work. Greeting Mohammad El- Labban, Thanks for your comment. I too am enjoying the MPD pens. When we are in a dearth of significant quantity and quality of pollens June to late August. I like to feed pollen patties every other week during this time. I do a quick inspection, feed syrup if necessary, (like to have 40lbs in combs) and check queen performance. We have small hive beetles so I slice the patties into sections to create more surface area. I feed a strong colony 1 pound or 453 grams of patty. If the mites are kept very low, we have a vigorous queen, and we keep nutrition high we will have a wonderful colony to go into winter with. -Kamon

Also here in Lebanon during fall, we have a small period of pollen and nectar flow from Elecampane (Inula viscosa) flowering which is similar to Goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea) in Tennessee, that allows us to boost up the colony's population before winter. Here in MN I worry about all my frames getting so plugged up with bee bread the queen has no place to lay. Sure like the idea of getting comb drawn out. Such an asset for a small colony to have.

I like it when my queens prefer the bottom box :-) Is that 1 of your patties or a bought one, seems soft, is it kuz of temp? Love to have a big walk in freezer to just store extra supers on honey. Ya I find there are a lot of bug I don't like anymore kuz I found out they was bad for mt bees. Like dragonfly's there is a big one that comes and buzzes my hives flight path, lol. These feeders from Motherlode have been known to last 20 years. They are made very well I think. Those are Mann lake Ultra bee patties. they are hot and therefor very soft! Thanks for watching DC!

If it is 1:1 likely one medium frame tops. This is why I like 2 gallon feeders. If a colony is behind I can add weight quicker. I fed 100 gallons to just 1 yard today. The boxes are heavy on most of the colonies. a medium box of solid food is what I want to see on a healthy 10 frame strong hive this time of year
I do get some shb damage. A small amount Only do it to strong colonies. However most of the larvae are chucked out at such a small size they don't develop well
Just curious. Do you spray your arms with something or use a certain type of bathing product? I noticed that no bees even landed on your arms throughout the video. Ever since I started feeding my bees after the nectar flow my hives are aggressive even with smoke.
I live in west Tennessee, and the one time I tried patties they quickly were infested with SHB larvae. I’m scared to give them an incentive to thrive and weaken my hive. How do I avoid this??
KAMON - can you please tell me if commercial beekeepers use ant deterrents and do they use robbing screens? I am up to 12 colonies and it's getting to be a little much to do all that. How do people with 100 colonies or more deal with ants and robbing? The minute I feed syrup to my bees the ants come marching in. Thank you!
Robbing is a huge pain in the rear end. We try to be in and out of colonies in 3 minutes tops. If the colony has good brood, we pull a frame or two to confirm then shut the colony up fast. We feed colonies late in the evening if we can to prevent as much robbing. What kind of feeders are you using??
@@kamonreynolds I have some hive top feeders and some frame feeders. I live in Southern California and it is SO hot and dry right now. I have Bee-Smart robbing screens and also I use these ant stands that you fill with oil but at some point it's just not practical to have to use those on all my colonies. That's why I was wondering if commercial beekeepers do any type of ant deterrent. I will try to add sugar syrup close to dark. Tha's a good idea. Thanks!
@@so_cal_mom Hi Mimi's bees, The only ant problems I have here is when I use inner covers or top feeders. I rarely use either and so there aren't many issues here with ants. However, you may have tougher ants to contend with. I know some commercial guys use ant bait or roach bait to kill them. All you have to do is put it into a container that bees can't access. Not legal, but that is what several commercial guys do.

I’m open feeding with half gallon mason jars, been killing about 10 small hive Beatles a day on the lids so far not many have been found in the hives

Once we pull off the spring crop we are done taking honey for the year and feed with gusto to build bees

I can't believe you still add pollen patty this time of year with the SHB! Don't they lay in it and infest the hive? Do you use Swiffer sheets?

Store them in a freezer for winter or split use or sling them out and save the syrup for feeding bees or making great pollen patties
