- Bar chart race of top 20 The Walking Dead TV show characters total cumulative screen time (estimated) from Season 1 (2010) to Season 9 (2019).
How many characters from season 1 do you think would make it to this chart at the end?
Note that the screen time of characters was captured automatically by a machine. We tried to be as stringent as possible with the machine but it is still not as good as a human doing the same task. And so the screen time may not be completely accurate.
Other notes:
- This video captures the top 20 characters for their total cumulated screen time throughout the entire 9 seasons of The Walking Dead.
- New Characters who showed up later in the series will have to cumulate their screen time to a point where it becomes one of the top 20 characters having the most screen time.
- Reasons for dead characters to have increased screen time can be due to flashbacks, or someone else has been recognised as that character.

The fact Andrea, a character who died in season 3, has more screentime than Carl, a character that died in season 8, is mind blowing
Carl was not very popular, they are writing a product, and they need characters that are popular to sell the show, its the ugly truth, thats why Daryl got so much screen time and Carol.
Especially knowing the fact that season 1 had only 6 episodes

But its true, they deviated heavily from the source material, and actors in the show protested when they killed off Carl, but for the producers it made sense to get rid off one of the less popular characters.
Walking Dead is a prime example of american TV is all about how popular its characters are and the actors playing them, otherwise the story is probably the lowest priority of the entire show.
Yeah, I'm really confused how it wasn't until season 6 that Daryl finally got more screentime than Andrea.

Daniel MacDonald It’s because originally she would have been in the role of Michonne as the badass female lead married to Rick, only that when Darabont was fired the actress for Andrea was canned shortly thereafter, it’s also why Dale was killed so abruptly in season two, comic wise he also should have survived till season 5 and been the one eaten by the Terminus group.
Don't have a good Name I know all about the comic differences. And yeah, I’ve heard of that drama. Still, the amount of screen time she got was still surprising. Still in the top 10 until one of the recent seasons. Interesting.
We were surprised to see how many characters from season 1 remained up at the top too.
I miss her, she was bad ass I never really get why the show runner writes this weird story love with the governor, that completely ruined her character from everyone

Idk Carl was off screen a lot staying in the house. Much of when he was younger he wasn't in the show that much. Maybe a few seconds here and there. Dwights screentime came during Negan, as he was in a lot of scenes with Negan.

Carl deserved more screen time and a better death
I agree with you. The whole season was really bad written in general.
carl should have outlived everyone! we watched him grow for 8 years, he should still be alive, carl and judith cant be compared, judith hasn’t gone through half the pain and traumatization carl went through, carl knew the world as it was before, its annoying just imagine badass grown up carl
I hate the decision to kill off carl 100% and think he should still be on the show BUT I disagree about a better death. They did that really well. He got to spend his last day with judith, he got to write letters to everyone and got to have a proper goodbye with rick/michonne/Daryl. He gave a path forward for the group and Rick still was following that path to his disappearance. The only thing I think they could have done better was how he was bite. Maybe he could have been fighting a hoard in order to get siddiq out and to safety instead of tripping over a twig. But other than how he was bite, they did his death really well.
Ethan Campbell that’s what I meant by a better death, he shouldn’t have gone out being bitten from honoring a random dudes mother. It should’ve been more meaningful.
joseph A exactly! Everyone except daryl tbh (unless he dies from old age then yeah lmao). The show would have been just so much better with grown up Carl and Judith after the time skip. We could see how Carl handles his father’s “death”, and his relationship with Judith. He could’ve turned into the next leader of the group and it just would have been better.

The first two seasons I really didn't like Carol, but then she became such a bad ass! One of the best characters. Only the last season she had some horrible writing.

I’m surprised how the Governor possibly has the least amount of episodes in terms of all of the main characters in the opening intros. He wasn’t even introduced until Season 3, but he has the third highest amount of screen time, right behind Andrea, halfway through Season 4. That just amazes me.
That's absolutely right, but it kinds of make sense as there were episodes mainly featuring the Governor.
To be fair in season 4 alone he got about 90 minutes to himself in episodes 6 and 7, and then all the time in episode 8 as well.. makes sense
Yeah I think he was in 16 episodes only.
David Morissey was an unbelievable risk that paid off so well. I prefer his version to the comics.

Andrea had a bunch of episodes centered on her because she was separated from the group and was found by Michonne and then we were introduced to the whole Governor storyline because of her. Then the writers were like k bye.

The screen time was captured automatically by a machine and so it may not be completely accurate. But the reasons for characters who are dead to have increased screen time can be due to flashbacks. Or it recognised someone else as Rick, like Aaron who looked alike to Rick in season 9.

Dale and Andrea had MUCH more screen time then I thought! Dale was still on the list in the beginning of season 7! And andrea is still pretty high up at that point! I dont remember them on for that long, but I guess season 2 was a big time grab for both of them.

Reasons why Andrea remained so high is because of the amount of characters in the show now. So when Andrea was around you had like a few main characters whereas around season 6 is when the cast just explodes so less screen time for most characters
a lot of people hate on amc for that but if u think about it, it makes a lot of sense. in the beginning their meant to believe that they are the only ones left but throughout time they learn theres so much more

Well, as I understand it, the screen time of the characters was calculated by the computer, and Clara was very similar to Walker, and perhaps every time a walker appeared on the screen, the computer considered him Clara.
