Of course we don't know them personally...but I wonder if her son has seen her treat and talk to people the way that he did to her? He got it from somewhere. Or, maybe her husband has done it? Generally kids see the disrespect within the household beforehand. Just my thoughts...
He's watched the husband play and cheat on her for years. I believe that the son has not seen this behavior (or similar) towards his Mom. He'd step in if he had! This balled up anger that exploded is SELF INFLICTED trauma on display. Why does she think he's going 3 hours away...for a 'ball's scholarship?...No! To give distance to himself and his mess that SELF created. I read that Marie's a GOOD Mom, but what does that mean?? If she enables her son to NOT be responsible...is that good for him and her other children/grand children to see? We/US Moms create these monsters that can get out of control. Marie does not have to support all of those people! Or is this good Mother doing what's good for those kids & their mothers? The son doesn't have to step up because Marie has claimed that spot.
