No Backwards compatability would be a huge missed opportunity. The Switch has a huge Library, and those with day 1 switches may want to upgrade and still play their games.
That said I guess it's probably an issue with the tegra processor, a switch successor to me would be using a newer AMD mobile chip (maybe), and there could be compatability issues with the previous gen.
The new chip is based off an Ai chip that was meant to drive cars. Called code name Orin. They custom made orin into a moblie form factor made to be developed for and play games. Deveoplerz have report it being as powerful as a ps4 pro with dlss to help it push 2k or 4k. Probably fake 4k, not native but first party nintendo can non doubt do it with their Nintendo magic.
Nvidea would be stupid to let go of Nintendo vice versa.
Nintendo has a huge history of Backwards compatibility
GameCube to Wii
Wii to Wii
Gameboy to Gameboy color
Gameboy/color to Gameboy advanced
Gameboy advanced to DS
DS to 3Ds
6 gens of backwards compatibility out of 9 gens total. With only need to snes to N64
Backwards compatibility has always been maintained as long as they've continued with the same storage medium standard.
Nintendo is not your friend. They want to make money.
@JDoomhauer87 Yeah, that's the unfortunate truth. Tbf I mostly play Games on PC now, but it is nice having a Switch to play games wherever, despite the performance tanking on some of the more recent games (like TotK).
Hopefully at the very least this new console they are making gonna be powerful enough to last as long As the Switch has.
Backward compatibility is a must.
Yeah, this video is talking shit. The 3DS played DS games and they were released 5 years apart. There’s absolutely no way Nintendo release a console with exactly the same footprint as the switch without backwards compatibility.
Nintendo consoles almost always uad backwards compatibility, im sure this will too@@enac1544

Why?
No backwards compatibility me no buy… the switch has a massive library I’m working on and if I can’t carry it over I’ll use the money the new system would cost and buy more games for my switch instead
Seriously. I would buy day 1 if it has switch backwards compatibility, but, if not, I’ll probably wait for the next big Zelda game, which is likely 4-5 years away.
I’d sell my switch if it had backwards compatibility but with the amount of money I’m spending on games rn I would not get it if it did not have backwards compatibility
@@thomasfryer5706 that’s another thing about the next Gen switch (or whatever it ends up being) it’s gonna be a good while for anything like the next Zelda and Xenoblade for example so without backwards compatibility (possibly with some games being enhanced on the new hardware) there’s not gonna be much to play for a while which will probably hurt it in the long term…
@@RaxonXVI It’s possible that when you consider how much of BotW was reused for TotK, as well as the fact that it started development before BotW even came out, as it was originally going to be a DLC for BotW, they might have put at least part of the team on making a new Zelda game for the Switch 2, however I doubt it. I don’t know enough about Xenoblade to comment on that, but whatever the case, if this rumor is true, Nintendo has really shot itself in the foot by releasing so many big name games in the last 2 years of the Switch’s life cycle. Just since July 2022, we’ve gotten a new Xenoblade, Splatoon, Pokémon, Fire Emblem, Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin, with a new Detective Pikachu, 2D Mario, and Warioware, Super Mario RPG remake and an Princess Peach game coming down the pipeline before June 2024. This reads like the first two years of a system, not the last two. If Nintendo releases a new console in Q3 or Q4, it will be very surprising if they can put out a new entry in more than a couple of these franchises, leaving potentially the only system seller it could launch with as a new 3D Mario.
@@thomasfryer5706 exactly such an interesting place for nintendo to be in
If it’s cartridge based I don’t see why they wouldn’t make it backwards compatible. Either have two slots or one slot that accommodates the sizes and shape of both like the 3DS did.
I really hope it's just 1 slot, because if it's 2 slots, I really doubt the next console after the switch 2 would go up to 3 slots. Hoping for switch stuff to be playable on the newest hardware for as long as possible
The problem isn’t the cartridges, if they use a chip with a different architecture the switch 1 games simply won’t run on it, unless the switch 2 emulates the old games which probably will make them look worst than they did on the switch
Because that has nothing to do with the medium and everything to do with the chip architecture.
@@clydefrosch It wasn’t a big issue with the Ds to 3ds era. Don’t simp for these companies.

Noob , don't believe a random guy
It uses new cartridges, so I'm guessing that the only issue is they won't fit.. but maybe they will let you play downloaded games? Nintendo is the worst at this cartridge crap and having way way way too many platforms over the years.
@@Ryan-re1rs noob
@@Ryan-re1rs The DS and DS Lite both had additional cartridge slots for GBA games, clearly Nintendo cares about backwards compatibility
I highly Doubt they will remove backwards compatibility if its a portable console
3DS was compatible because inside it retained a DS processor for backward compatibility. Back then that processor was cheap as hell. They either will have to include the same Tegra SOC (increasing the price by around 50$); emulate the switch (at expense of higher power use); or patch the thousands of Switch Games to remain compatible (requiring huge manpower $$$). Retrocompatibility is crucial. A vast amount of switch games have been released in their physical version, It would be a waste of money if with all the new top tier Nintendo games like ToTK that released just this year to not have backwards compatibility.

Nintendo’s not THAT stupid. I guarantee there will be backwards compatibility.
They never made any backwards compatible consoles in their history so why start now? The whole point of making a new console is because the current one has reached market saturation.

I'm not bothering with this at all. I have a Switch and it hasn't been used in over 2 years. So I'm not wasting money on another for it to sit and collect dust.
I have only used it for for Nintendo exclusives as any and all 3rd party games I buy and play on PS5.
There’s a reason the military uses the Steam Deck for military hardware and not the Switch. The switch is the most unreliable console ever
Yeah but I like the exclusives and being able to dock to a tv
The military also tries to make weapons of everything, so it's a good that the Switch isnt a go to for kilitary purposes. 😂
I assume they use xbox as well to send drone strikes?
@@sinisterkorbin3141 nah but the US government did buy 1760 PlayStation 3 Consoles to build a super computer for the Department of Defense. 😂
Yeah because game consoles can only have their merit decided by whether or not the military uses them.

Just an FYI:
The look of it in the video has nothing to do with what the guy is saying. The only leaked info is what he says.
I actually dont think it being backwards compatible is necessarily needed.
You still have your switch, and a lot of switch owners are not just gonna toss them when they get a switch 2. There gonna collect and use them still.
But for performance resons. For example the newest pokemon should perform much better on the new one.
My day 1 switch which is the first freaking model is suffering. If the new console has backwards compatibility I'm not getting rid of it because I have emotional attachment to it but I'd let it finally rest
If Switch 2 doesn’t have backwards-compatibility I won’t get it. Don’t even care if the games are cool (unless it’s Yo-kai Watch) I won’t get it.
He says "a step down from oled" like more than half the switch family has oled
If the switch 2 can’t play switch 1 games I’m not buying it personally. Seems stupid considering backwards compatibility has been nintendos thing for a while. They’re a multibillion dollar company and it’s quite literally one chip; they can make it work
Was Nintendo the first gaming company to use backwards compatibility? Because I've always thought it was Sega, what with the Genesis being backwards compatible with the Master System
How do you make something that would already seem fake and just make it seem pike a joke, like, bro those controllers be looking like a lego 2x1 tile 💀.

I think we will get backwards compatibility, since we got those with most previous sequel systems. Ds-3ds, wii-wiiU, gameboy-gbc, etc.
“So I guess it won’t be called the Nintendo switch 2 details”💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀
Why can’t we just have a darn home console without the whole portable gimmick
An LCD screen is good enough, but an OLED would’ve been really nice! It should also have at least 8GB of RAM, while the Switch only has 4GB of RAM.
They will release Switch 2 OLED a couple years after 💰
If the Switch 2 isn’t backwards compatible I’m just buying another Switch. I have enough games to play until the Switch 3 AT LEAST. 😂
I bet $10000 no one gonna buy it until a few years just like the iphone
I also hear that there might be a Switch Mini, which I'd actually want since I like to have portable consoles I can bring around like the 3DS and I don't have to worry as much to feel like it'll break
MAKE IT BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE AND ADD ESHOP MUSIC AN THEMES!!!!!
No, nintendo is a small indie company that wants your money
I’ll wait until an official announcement, but I hope Nintendo gives portable VR gaming a shot, with a choice between VR and regular docked gameplay similar to games that needed Motion Plus for the Wii (done better of course, no external pricey accessory, built straight into the console with a couple test games like with the 3Ds)
The move they need to make is that, you keep the joycons and same and such, but just upgrade the system.
It should be just a upgraded Switch and everything is still the same but upgraded system specs.
If it doesn’t have backwards compatibility I will implode
I already have no faith in it. For the next console I expect it to run fucking smooth as Michael Jackson, oled mf screen, 1440 or 4K resolution and PLEASE NO WACK ASS MOTION BLUR 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I think it will have backwards compatibility to digital switch games but not to physical one because of a different cardridge slot

Nintendo had a good history of having backwards compatible software, so I really hope they keep that going with their next console. Especially if it’s going to be handheld
Assuming that any of this is reliable information, the lack of backwards compatibility would be a huge blow. The Switch has a giant catalogue of great games that suffer due to their console being underpowered in service to a gimmick.
I think it should definitely have backwards compatibility just like how the 3DS was able to play regular DS games

The step back to lcd is Nintendo milkin you for the next update
I hope that backwards compatibility is gonna be a thing because I don’t really feel like getting a new console if it’s gonna be like the switch with a few minor changes. I understand that they might not because then we will be forced to buy it but a lot of people will be more upset that backwards compatibility isn’t a feature
Bro said details leaked and didn’t say anything just a bunch of Maybes
I would be very surprised if we didn’t get backwards compatibility
I smell a Wii U situation....not as bad, but this isn't it.
That concept art is great
All I can say is make something with 2 screens so you can play DS and 3DS games. Kind of like the Wii U but with a detachable screen to put into a dock. I'm thinking like the top screen is the dock screen and the bottom screen is almost identical to the gamepad.
Honestly I like the LCD screen better. I still have my original LCD switch that I got shortly after launch and looking at the OLED makes my eyes strain. I do hope it is backwards-compatible though
i think if it existed, it would be called the Nintendo son of a BI-

Bro just described the og switch 💀
Nintendo has confirmed today there will be backwards compatibility, but that’s all we know
If it is backwards compatible. I hope it has two cartridge slots like the Nintendo DS had. That would be something. But I’m hoping it will work with Nintendo Switch Games too.
Nintendo has always been good with backwards compatibility with handhelds. I hope this will also be the case, as having 2 devices to play switch and switch 2 games would be a huge pain in the butt, and might be a bit of a drawback for returning customers.
If it’s not going to be backwards compatible that would be a shame. Let’s just hope that we would still be able to use the Nintendo currency from Switch to Switch 2 without any issues just like so for Wii U and the 3Ds line if I last recalled. 🤞😣🤞
Will wait for the OLED version. Impossible to go back to a non-OLED screen at this point.
you're right i dont think it will be called the nintendo switch 2 details have leaked
The rumors also said that it was running Breath of the Wild, which means, there's backwards compatibility. Also, if the graphical leap from the Tegra X1 to this new model (maybe Tegra X2? X4? Nobody knows) is the same as it was with previous generations of Snapdragon then we can assume that the power of this console will be similar (if not superior) to the XBOX Series S with the power draw of an iPhone, meaning, we will have basically an arm powered device with good power consumption (maybe about 6-8 hours gameplay) with a portable machine that can play games with graphics like in the UE5 demo "The Matrix Awakens".
No backwards compatibility would be absolutely ridiculous with the online games like Smash, Mario Kart and Splatoon. And especially with tears of the kingdom being only one year old when the new console launches. With this they shoot themselves in the foot again
Backwards compatibility is a make it or break it if this is a follow up to the switch
No backwards compatibility might deter me from buying until they can make it play Switch games
woah woah woah, you’re telling me that the switch 2 will be a hybrid console just like the switch? 🤯🤯🤯
Nintendo would be so stupid not making it backwards compatible imagine having to buy the same game game from the same company.
