      there wouldn't be homeless dogs out there if people went to shelters instead of breeders. Breeders overpopulate dogs and other animals in poor conditions just for the money; meanwhile there are millions of animals on the streets or sitting in small cages in shelters.

      Jillian Cooper genuine question: I want a puppy which shelter usually never have and a breed shelter would normally never have. The only place I’ve seen has them is a store and Ik I’m against shopping for dogs but there is no other way

      Jillian Cooper Let people decide where they want to get their dogs. There are good breeders out there and some people want exactly what they want and that’s fine. Personally, I support reputable, preservationist breeders and don’t plan on getting a dog from anywhere else, but that’s my preference.
      It’s not their fault there’s an “overpopulation problem”. It doesn’t exist and reputable breeders don’t put a dent in the dog population and believe it or not, some commercial breeding facilities are actually improving in their operations (some do full on health/genetic testing and spoil the dogs with amazing facilities).
      Dogs are being imported circumventing the system, bringing in diseases, just to “fill demand” for dogs. A lot of places are actually becoming emptier so they’re trying to fill them with imports OR as part of retail rescue (where they work with breeders on purpose to obtain stock for “rescue”). The system is messed up in some cases, yet people will not acknowledge it and blame breeders for everything. I tell people who want a shelter dog to be very careful in the place they choose.

    • @carlyskead6106
      @carlyskead6106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

      @@jilliancooper931 This is incorrect, shelters exist because of irresponsible owners, backyard breeders and puppy mills. Responsible & reputable breeders do not "overpopulate dogs", as they will always take a dog back no matter what to prevent dogs being in shelters, they only breed for betterment of the breed and most purebred dogs have a purpose (working, sporting etc.). Reputable breeders are huge advocates for dogs, without reputable breeders people would only be getting puppy mill and backyard breeder dogs. Whether straight from the source or from a shelter. It's an unfortunate cycle, but breeders are not to blame. I think adopting is great and have done it many times, but people are very misinformed about breeders. If people only bought from reputable breeders.....there would be no need for shelters.

  • @christinaswainbank9573
    @christinaswainbank9573 4 ปีที่แล้ว +642

    I understand everyone’s shelter comments but if people wanted to rescue they would rescue. When people buy from breeders it’s because they know what they want and you can be sure what the breed is, their bloodline, their history, temperament, etc.

    • @taylaios
      @taylaios  4 ปีที่แล้ว +91

      Exactly, and you can train them from puppy to adulthood as well. Rescuing is a wonderful thing and so many dogs need homes, but so do the puppies from breeders :)

      Lol going to a breeder means choosing a responsible one which most doodle breeders aren’t. They also tend to have many behavioral and health problems that people don’t truly look not it, the fact that’s it’s based off one dog she cared for is supper irresponsible.

    • @Sandy33569

      True, but this isn’t a responsible breeder.
      1. NO responsible breeder would sell two litter mates to one person from the get go.
      2. NO doodle breeders are reputable. No reputable breeder would specialize in creating mixed dogs without a goal of furthering the bloodline through breeding many generations to create a new breed.
      3. Reputable breeders are fully transparent of the pros and cons of the breed, through facts. Doodle breeders do not do this. They regularly lie to potential buyers.
      If you REALLY are set on a doodle, at least find a breeder of Australian Cobber Dogs or Australian Labradoodles (those who are actually registered with the Australian club or a club affiliated with it, NOT those who pretend they have an “Aussie Doodle” and are not part of the club). Both contain breeders who are actually working towards creating a breed, and they have standards they are working towards. They are becoming more consistent and in the case of both of these, they no longer allow early generations of mixes (so NO F1 or F1B or F2, etc allowed). They’ve gotten far enough where they’re getting consistent features and the dogs are guaranteed to be low shedding.
      Otherwise, I am all for responsible breeding, where all recommended breed health/genetic testing is done and the dogs prove themselves in some venue (confirmation or dog sports). I own a dog from a reputable show breeder (who breeds versatile dogs) and am not ever planning on “rescuing”. Nothing wrong with it AT ALL, but it’s not for me personally. I like getting from reputable breeders for the reasons you state.
      There are a lot of bad breeders out there, though. A lot who pretend to be reputable, so do be careful! I always recommend going to a breed’s parent club to find reputable breeders. They don’t tend to tolerate nonsense from bad breeders.

    It sucks having to do that. But a Breeder should never let you adopt two siblings from the same litter. They tend to depend on one another, anxiety becomes issues with them and yes training is twice as hard. So you should Never adopt or buy two siblings from the same litter. That being said im glad the breeder took the other pup back to find another home, and its always a learning experience. So glad your grandparents were able to keep at least one even though its hard having to rehome the other.

    For those who are commenting before watching the entire video, I want to clarify a few things.
    1. I did not buy these two dogs, my grandparents did.
    2. After two weeks when it was extremely difficult to train them together, they were bonding with each other over humans, and fighting constantly, my grandparents wanted to return one of the dogs to the breeder to be rehoused (she was only 9 weeks old at the time)
    3. I wanted to take in Dakota to my house to see if it was better with just one dog for my grandparents, and I wanted to keep her. But we already have two dogs and my father wouldn’t allow it. So stop saying I should’ve planned for this and that I’m awful for not doing research. I never asked to get a puppy right now because it isn’t the right time. I was trying to help my grandparents.
    4. I incorrectly used the word “adopt” within the video. I thought taking any dog into your house was adopting.
    I could’ve left this video after the puppies were home but I chose to share what happened so that you can be fully prepared if you are considering getting 2 sibling dogs. For those who have been kind, I appreciate you so much ❤️ thank you for reading

      1. Littermate syndrome is real... Most people should never get two siblings. I've seen some very experienced breeders/trainers pull it off, but it requires a lot of consistency, a lot of alone time spent between you and EACH puppy, and a lot of training, or they will never find their owners more valuable than their sibling.
      2. You were 100% correct in your use of "adopt". It just means taking in a dog, even if it's from a breeder. You didn't birth it, so you adopted it (speaking in general, not you in specific).
      I will say, I'm not a fan of doodles. The breeders chronically lie. The majority of them do shed (and mat up sooooo easily, especially when they end up with both coat types so the shed hair ends up trapped in the "poodle" coat), and having the "best of both" is not how genetics works, but they like to tell you that it does.

    • @Sandy33569
      @Sandy33569 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      hevan lea Not sure how much they paid for them, but doodle breeders regularly charge $2,000+, with some charging upwards of 4-5k. It's ridiculous. I'd suggest finding a purebred, preservationist, responsible breeder, instead. There are a LOT of breeds with similar looks and varying temperaments, so there's something for everyone while avoiding the typical pitfalls of owning a doodle, as long as it's obtained from a reputable breeder.

    Be careful. Sometimes it works but getting littermates is a big no no. I’ve learned the hard way. I got two Belgian Malinois puppies and they were great for a few weeks and then started attacking each other. They are both 2 years old now and we gave one to a friend and tried to see if they would get along and they still want to kill each other. Some people can make it work and the dogs are fine but they could possibly end up hating each other.

    I literally cried because I feel the same way with my dog, we have grown up together and he is my life, idk where I would be without him. Also my brother and his girlfriend got a brother and sister from the same litter and they are best friends, were easy to train and are much happier than any other dog I’ve seen they play all of the time and have each other as company my whole family wishes we got two when we got my dog but unfortunately he is already 9 and my parents don’t want a new puppy. Good luck girl! Look up littermate syndrome, especially with them being so young:/ you don’t want them to bond with each other over you! When it comes to puppies growing up together do walks, play times separately, feeding separately and then do everything again with them together. Then when they’re old enough, get them trained! You don’t want them to rule the household!! 😬🙌🏼

    I see a lot of negativity towards litter mates all the time. I have shih tzu sisters and they are the best! While they really love each other they love us humans more. They were together 24/7 for over a year and a half and never had an issue with them only bonding to each other. They now sleep separately as our apartment is too small for them to sleep together comfortably but their relationship is even better now being separated at night

    sounds like you unfortunately went to a backyard breeder from lack of research😕. a good breeder would never let one family adopt 2 puppies. i’m happy the breeder agreed to take the pup back but that was just luck on your part without a contract. i don’t agree with “adopt don’t shop” mentality, but this just makes me sad. hopefully you learned from it and won’t do this again. we all make mistakes, and i don’t know the entire situation. just please do try and reflect on it with your grandparents tho.

    I was going to say something but saw the pinned comment. If you want more info look up ‘ littermate syndrome ‘ :). We have a nine month husky, in August our adult foster husky we had for a year left. Our puppy got super depressed, we have been wanting to get another puppy since he is fully trained but have been waiting until he’s a bit older because he has shown to be very dependent but we are getting there now and getting our new addition soon :) I have seen the major hardship of puppies being adopted together even if not littermates but mainly it’s with littermates. My friend had two standard poodle dogs, taken together. Actually they got one and a few weeks later the breeder couldnt sell his identical brother still. Anyways long story short they were seven, came home and his brother who was even off leash trained jumped the fence and got hit by a car right in front of their house. Even with all the proper steps in keeping siblings ( professional trainer, separate crates, time away from eachother etc ) the one got so depressed. When they took the passed ones crate down that night the other laid in the spot it was in and cried all night ... this went on for months. He still often lays there. He starved himself for a while and refused to even get up for his walks. They had to get him tube fed for a few weeks and debated putting him down because his quality of life wasn’t there. Eventually he slowly started eating again and would start going to work with them again even if they had to carry him, and would just lay everywhere and stare at you with tears all over his face :(. He is better now but still often lays near his brothers things and cries. This is over a year later. I really hope people can be more aware of this in the future ...

    They are so cute! When I was 10 my family got a great dane puppy from a local shelter who was adorable. She was already like 60 pounds but still acted like a tiny puppy. When we got her one of my little sisters was only about 2 weeks old and she was not a very good baby. She always wanted to be held, she always screamed, and since she got so much attention my other sister who was 2 got super jealous and would cry all the time as well. We stopped giving the puppy sophie as much attention so she started to tear thing up and be bad. We ended up having to give her back to her foster family which was one of the saddest things I have ever had to do. I wish I could see where she is now. After my sibling were older we adopted another dog. He is a hounds mix named Otis and he is the best! We got him when he was 5 and he had a lot of trust issues and was scared of men, loud noises, brooms, sudden movements, and pretty much everything but from day one we had an incredible bound. That night we put him in his crate and he started crying so I slept on the ground all night with him and long story short now he sleeps in my bed every night. He is getting over his fears and has learned so many tricks. He knows agility courses, how to sit, lay down, roll over, shake on both paws, bow, sit pretty and hold it, stay, come, and so much more. He is the best dog ever! And he is so pretty ( he is my profile ). I would love to reascue another dog but we don't have a fence. We might get one soon and then we might get another one.

    That’s so strange to me people are saying it’s bad to take siblings from a litter 😅. I guess there are bad situations! But a few years ago our friend found a litter of rat terrier puppies on the side of the road and my family ended up taking in a brother and sister that were twins of the litter. They have never had a problem with each other! Always loving each other and playing. Maybe cus it’s a boy and girl?

    • @mikaylar2993
      @mikaylar2993 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't get it either. My family are licensed whippet breeders and we've kept puppy siblings multiple times throughout the years and never had a problem. There no actual scientific proof to back the term 'litter-mate syndrome' up, it's based more on peoples opinions and experiences. Truthfully I think it's more that some bloodlines and genetics are more inclined for your puppy to exhibit anxiety and you've just got 2 puppies that share that exact bloodline. Also puppies are like babies/children and mimic each other, you know like when one twin cries then it usually sets off the other twin. Not hating on anyone, if anyone found any published reputable articles then leave a link, I'm actually really curious about it now.

    • @The_Soulful_Ginger_
      @The_Soulful_Ginger_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      michaela waite just because it didn’t happen with the pups you kept doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. I work professionally in animal welfare, rescue and rehabilitation as well as being a vet tech. We are constantly getting dogs/cats surrendered for this reason. We always try to deter people from taking two from the same litter. If they are adamant about it we can not say no however we do our best to educate potential adopters on ways to keep these behaviors at bay if theyre insistent on taking siblings. More often than not the people who adopt two siblings and don’t work with each puppy individually and either encourage this behavior or are negligent in working towards preventing this behavior end up returning/surrendering one or both dogs in future. Sometimes, the behavior is so advanced that no amount of training, rehab, or medication can mitigate these dogs’ issues. A lot of the time they are too far gone emotionally/mentally and the kindest thing we can provide them is humane euthanasia. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH ON ADOPTING SIBLINGS PEOPLE. SIBLING SYNDROME IS VERY VERY REAL.

    Honestly my family got lucky because we got two sibling German shepherds, a boy and a girl, and they do amazing together. They were fine the first couple weeks and then they started fighting for a couple weeks until they established the alpha. It’s almost been three years with them and they are amazing together! Future rule though, I’ve always known littermates are risky but I heard girl siblings are a BIG no no as they tend to fight a lot. I definitely think you made the right decision

      @annac7761 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have two girls, and they're fine so far! They used to fight alot but now its calmed down and they just play. So i guess it all depends on how you train them, or maybe we just got lucky

    • @yvettecalderon3269
      @yvettecalderon3269 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Red Cloudz I’m not an expert on dog behavior or anything but I do think it comes down to what you know your dogs behavior is around other dogs. My family recently got a male Yorkie puppy and my dogs were fine but that’s also because they were well socialized with other dogs and they tended to be more gentle since I think they know he was a puppy. I definitely think it’s something you should consider before doing it but if your dogs are fine with other dogs I say go for it! The more the merrier😁
