    Love it! It’s not just informational, it’s really entertaining and educational as well. That background jazz music is hitting the spot too.

    When working with splines, I just discovered the "roto assist" You can enable the Roto Assist button in the toolbar when you begin drawing your shape to have points snap to the closest high-contrast edge as you draw the shape. The points that have snapped to an edge are indicated by a cyan outline.
    There are three main Roto Assist options.
    - Multiple Points: Allows adding multiple points along an entire edge with a single click instead of having to add each point individually.
    - Distance: Defines the pixel range within which searching for an edge will take place.
    - Reset: Used for resetting the snap attribute of the snapped points. After resetting, the points will become unavailable for tracking.
    Give it a try. This project seems like it could be perfect candidate.

      Welp, I learned something new! Mocha Pro has this but I didn't know Fusion can do it.

    Thanks, this is extremely helpful! Quick tip: You can also use the unsharp mask effect to sharpen the image for tracking. It sharpen the edges of the image, and is much more efficient than a contrast boost. Subscribed!

    Congratulations on this tutorial! Everything is well explained. You benefit from being known. My question: Instead of Polygon, shouldn't we use MagicMask?

    • @swataramedia
      @swataramedia  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It depends on the needs of the project :). Tools like magic mask or the rotobrush in After Effects can be great in a pinch but might not a) be up to the standards of most clients and b) might not fit well into certain VFX workflows. For example, if a roto artist uses magic mask and then hands that off to a compositor, the compositor wouldn't have a way to directly manipulate the shapes like you would with a normal rotoscoping workflow where vector shapes are used. They'd end up needing to go back to the roto artist for changes or attempt to make their own changes to it, in which case they'd probably use masks similar to what's shown in this video anyway.
      So it depends. I've used rotobrush on some parts of some films I've worked on (very small more unimportant things). But for the most part all my roto work is done with B-splines, X-splines, and Bézier curves. It seems more tedious but does end up being easier to change after the fact.
      I hope that helps!

      those don't give perfectly accurate edges for professional results.

    You might put the TL;DW version at the end and tell people so they'll leave after filling up the view bar and tricking the algorithm

    Great tutorial, appreciated. Question - in your experience, how's the difference of doing rotoscoping in Fusion (as in this tutorial) vs. doing it with mask (power window mask and tracker) in Color page? It seems doing it in Color page is easier? Does fusion generate better result or easier? Thanks!

    • @swataramedia
      @swataramedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a great question! I typically do all of my roto inside of Fusion for a couple reasons. One is I'll often be doing other VFX work inside of Fusion and it's just easier having the masks exist inside of there, rather than having to export an alpha from the color page. Also, when I'm actually doing roto work, 99% of the time I'll be using Mocha Pro in the Fusion page.
      But, the color page has some incredible tools that can help isolate parts of footage, like the power windows you mentioned and of course, the qualifier. I think it comes down to the job at hand. For example, I'm currently working on the VFX for a short sci-fi film. If I was only doing a sky replacement, I might just use the color page. But for this one I'm putting another celestial body in the sky, so I need Fusion for that. Gotta choose the right tool for the job, always :).

      Great question. I watch countless videos where they say, let's go to the fusion page or the color page, but never explain WHY. I would love to see someone do a whole video on the similarities and differences, and when to use each one.

    after i create the mask and plug the nodes in, the image doesn’t crop and have a green screen background ie when you just got the floating head, what should i do?

    Hello, thx so much for the great tutorial, I followed it and applied it while working on a project, DID A LOT OF WORK ALREADY BUT I am running into the issues you have @26:51, its like the mask is stuck and every time I need to click a corner, it does this all over the place. I cant playback to see the result because of this. I am on a Macbook pro M1 Max. and 4 k Raw (canon) footage. Do you have any suggestions, I did so much work already,

      For all of my editing and VFX work, I'm afraid I'm on a custom-built Windows PC. I'm a Mac person through and through, but I needed the extra horsepower.
