      I'm away from my workstation at the moment, but I would imagine once you've tracked in Blender, you can export it in some sort of format that would work. Fusion's PointCloud3D node has an option for "Import Point Cloud" so it'd just be a matter of figuring out what it accepts!

    does fusion have better camera tracker than blender?

    • @swataramedia
      @swataramedia 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Technically.... it depends. Blender uses a manual tracking system which is more in line with how "proper" camera solving is done (in high-end software like 3DEqualizer). By manual I mean tracking individual points one by one until you have enough tracked to solve the camera. Fusion is at a disadvantage here because as far as I'm aware, they don't allow you to use manually tracked points and integrate them into your tracks (which can be helpful for more difficult to track shots). The advantage Fusion has is because of it tracking a ton of points throughout the shot, it's much easier to do things like creating a mesh from the geometry because you have so many more points to work with. Technically Fusion is faster because of its ability to "automate" the process and flood the scene with tracking points. Blender has the advantage of being totally free. The 3D camera tracker for Fusion is a part of the Studio version which is $300, but that's once and done and not a subscription. So all that to say it's a complicated answer. For being free Blender has a fantastic camera tracker.

      Depends on your needs! Sometimes magic mask or Rotobrush can give you the mattes you need, but often when you're working in a team environment, a roto artist needs to be able to hand off these roto shapes to a compositor. It just makes everything flow better. Just wanted to add some context for why roto is still done this way :).

    Thanks for this great tutorial. For faster roto, Fusion offers some really powerful shortcuts to move selected points of the shape like s, x, y, (scale or move in x/y), t for twisting + mouse click/ drag or just hold option/alt and mouse click/drag for moving single points, which are near the mouse arrow. No selection of points needed here.

    Can't be enough tutorials on the Paint node in Fusion:) So few of them for something that can be so useful. Great stuff! One thing that made me squirm a bit though was that whole "render out things on the Edit page"... since you can do a temp render in Fusion that plays back in real time. Maybe give it a try? Certainly was a bit of a game changer for me when I eventually got it set up the way I have it now (with a custom shortcut). Set your in/out points to the part you want to render (if you only want to render a select time), then right click on the node you want to render and at the top:ish of the menu go to "Create/Play Preview on" and then "RightView" (or left if that's the viewer you want it on). A popup will, uh, pop up, everything should be fine by default (though have look since there's stuff there to make quicker previews) so just click on that juicy "Start Render" button and let it chug through it all. Now here's the thing.. what it renders out is kinda living above/on top of the regular viewer but it doesn't use the regular play buttons in the viewer. So if you press play nothing will seem to happen. To play the preview, double click on the viewer. You can also right click on the viewer to set some loop options and other things, like fullscreen playback. You can scrub the preview by right click dragging on the viewer. To remove the preview, either right click on it and choose to remove it, or select one of the nodes, and choose to view it (notice how when there's a preview active, none of the nodes are set to any viewer) To be frank, it's all a bit weird when spelling it out. But it also something I use constantly since so I've gotten used to it:) You can of course not set a shortcut for this natively because that would be too handy. So to make things simpler for myself and because I use it so often, I've set up a "script" using a third party automation app so I only press shift+cmd+r and it opens up the render preview popup and presses that render button for me automagically. I use Keyboard Maestro (mac) but I'm sure the same could be done using AutoHotkey on windows for example. A final thing is about creating meshes from the camera tracker. While a "proper" native solution of course would be great, there's a super clever way to do it that (I don't think I can post links with this account yet) you can find in a video by static vfx called "3d Camera Tracking, lens distortion, ground reconstruction in Fusion / Resolve 17". Anyways, great stuff:)

      @swataramedia 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is some wonderful feedback and it's truly appreciated! And that does sound like a much more elegant solution to getting a preview going. Admittedly, I am much more used to Nuke's workflows when it comes to that, so I end up with some really dumb habits when I bring what I know over to Fusion sometimes 😂. And I believe I did take a peek at that tutorial you mentioned, but if memory serves I wasn't able to get it to work (maybe due to version changes?). I do wish Blackmagic would add a node similar to PointCloudGenerator, but we'll see what happens.

    • @JustCropIt
      @JustCropIt 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@swataramedia Yeah, give that preview render thing a try. It's such an essential thing and Fusion is being so weird about it, hiding it away and making interactions with it border on voodoo like rituals. Though kinda typical Fusion really, when I think about it:) Speaking of voodoo. Fun thing thing with that, let's be honest, crazy tutorial was that I found it after having seen your previous tutorial with all the monkey heads zooming down a canyon. I was thinking that surely there has to be a way to get some kind of mesh into Fusion (based on the Fusion Camera tracker... or even Blenders camera tracker). Did not find anything worthwhile for the longest time until I found that tutorial. And I tried it... I'd say on the previous version of DaVinci(?)... so that would be.. brb...18.6.4 (current version being 18.6.5) and it worked for me. Maybe you messed it up somewhere. Or maybe the process has some limits to what can make a mesh... who knows? I mean I get what it's doing (mostly) but it's really on the limits of what my brain can wrap it self around:) Just about to give it a second try (using 18.6.5) and try one of those fancy camera projection thingies:) Which is something that is way overdue for me to try out. Fun times ahead.

    Congratulations on this tutorial! Everything is well explained. You benefit from being known. My question: Instead of Polygon, shouldn't we use MagicMask?

    • @swataramedia
      @swataramedia 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the needs of the project :). Tools like magic mask or the rotobrush in After Effects can be great in a pinch but might not a) be up to the standards of most clients and b) might not fit well into certain VFX workflows. For example, if a roto artist uses magic mask and then hands that off to a compositor, the compositor wouldn't have a way to directly manipulate the shapes like you would with a normal rotoscoping workflow where vector shapes are used. They'd end up needing to go back to the roto artist for changes or attempt to make their own changes to it, in which case they'd probably use masks similar to what's shown in this video anyway. So it depends. I've used rotobrush on some parts of some films I've worked on (very small more unimportant things). But for the most part all my roto work is done with B-splines, X-splines, and Bézier curves. It seems more tedious but does end up being easier to change after the fact. I hope that helps!
