- A video about the greatest queens regnant in history (in my opinion!). I considered the most important rulers, not the nicest or kindest queens, and these queens regnant were very important in the history of their countries. If you think there are other queens who should be among the top 5, let me know :) (I wanted to include for example Pharaoh Hatshepsut and Tamar the Great of Georgia, too, but I couldn't find movies with them to have enough clips for this video.)
Isabella I / the Catholic, Queen regnant of Castile & Queen consort of Aragon (1474-1504)
Her marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon and their respective rule effected the permanent union, and quasi the birth, of Spain. Isabella had to fight a war of succession to claim her crown, but after that, she reorganized the governmental system, brought the crime rate to the lowest it had been in years, and unburdened the kingdom of the enormous debt her brother had left behind. She and her husband completed the Reconquista, by taking back all the remaining Moor territories in the Iberian Peninsula. Isabella supported Colombus's 1492 voyage that led to the discovery of America and the establishment of the Spanish Empire.
Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland (1558-1603)
Elizabeth is one the the most famous queens and most famous English monarchs ever. Her reign is known as the Elizabethan era, which is famous for the flourishing of arts, especially English drama, and for the seafaring prowess of English adventurers, which led to the establishment of the British Empire. She is best known for establishing the English Protestant Church and for the military victory against the Spanish Armada in 1588. While she helped to forge a national identity with her image, during her reign England asserted itself as a major European power in politics, commerce, and the arts.
Maria Theresa, Holy Roman Empress consort, Archduchess regnant of Austria, Queen regnant of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia (1740-1780)
Upon ascending the throne as the first woman to rule the Habsburg Empire, she had to fight a war of succession against almost all the European powers to keep her empire and inheritance. During her long reign afterwards, she promulgated financial and educational reforms, promoted commerce and the development of agriculture, and reorganised Austria's ramshackle military, all of which made her and her Habsburg Empire a key figure in the power politics in 18th-century Europe. She is considered to be one of the most capable rulers of her house, while she was also able to evoke both esteem and affection from her subjects.
Catherine II / the Great, Empress and Autocrat of All the Russias (1762-1796)
One of the greatest rulers Russia ever saw, Catherine II led her country into full participation in the political and cultural life of Europe, carrying on the modernising work begun by Peter the Great. With her ministers she reorganized the administration and law of the Russian Empire and extended Russian territory. She ordered the foundation of many new cities and towns, and was a great supporter of the Enlightenment. Under her reign, Russia was revitalised; it grew larger and stronger, and was recognised as one of the great powers of Europe.
Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom (1837-1901), Empress of India
Considered one of the greatest and most successful consitutional monarchs ever, Victoria's reign was a very long and stable one in the 19th-century Europe - while all other monarchies faced difficulties, revolts and even depositions, Victoria enjoyed immense popularity amongst her subjects. Her reign is called the Victorian era, which was a period of great industrial, cultural, and scientific developements in the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire.

She's the most beautiful out of the five of them, with the russian marina aleksandrova (ekaterina);) though this last one is akwardly similar to jenna coleman (victoria) she is by far better looking than her. Cat Blanchett as Elizabeth follows, and I can't decide which I like the most between the two remaining actresses;)
Urraca Queen of Leon and Castile 1109 - 1126. His favorite phrase was "I am the King". She was no so powerful like Isabel but his life was incredible for a woman of that time.

There are so many movies and series about other great queens and women, and I never understood how there could be almost nothing about her. She was, no doubt, one of the greatest female rulers ever, in her countries she is remembered as one of the most important monarchs of the country.

Lili1127 Yes its many series or film about Elizabeth I. or Mary Stuart but nothing about MT :/ She was really important in Europe history mother of Josef (or Joseph?) II., The reformator and Mary Anthoinet too. She isnt The most beloved monarch in our nation but still she was very important. I hope that The movie will be good, it must be hard to do it, because The actors are from diffrent country and speaks diffrent languages. I especially excited about his husband played because I know this actor, but he mosty played in comedy so hope that he did it well! :)
In my youth there was an Austrian, or at least German-speaking, series called "Der Kurier der Kaiserin", where Maria Theresia played a rather prominent role. Some clips can be found on youtube.

Yes, she was so great, I like her very much! But unfortunately I don't know about any movie or TV series about her so I didn't have clips about her to use in a video.
You forgot Queen Margrete l - princess of Denmark, queen consort of Norway - however she managed singlehandedly to create the KALMAR UNION of Denmark, Norway and Sweden with Finland, Iceland and Greenland in the 14.th century - and rule this vast empire successfully until her death 1412.

Hi! I am very happy to read your comment. I love strong female characters in history and women rulers, and Tamar is definitely one of my favourite ones, her story is so amazing and incredible. Beside her ruling, I also like the story about her second marriage, when she chose her husband herself after the unsuccessful first marriage which was forced upon her, and she chose a great warrior prince who she really liked.

Anyway, was Catherine de Medici's reign great for France? I know that she was a remarkable woman, probably the most powerful woman ever in France and maybe the most powerful woman in 16th century Europe. But was she very important for France? Did she bring great changes and developements and such? Because these 5 women I chose brought big changes and developements, and their rule was very important in the life of their countries - can we say the same about Catherine de Medici?

That's exactly the question I asked myself when I read that about Catherine that she was the most powerful. But, the truth is that Elizabeth I has a very good propaganda and she is always depicted as the mighty queen, while in the reality she was much simpler and had much more barriers and failures than most people know now about her. But she was still an important ruler for England.
I guess that maybe the fact that Catherine was more powerful is mostly because of the characteristics of England and France, and the monarchy in England and in France. I guess the monarch in France usually had more ultimate/absolute power than in England. And I guess that France politically had more power in Europe than England.

Check again, your information is wrong. It's impossible that Isabella persecuted Protestants. She died in 1504, Protestantism was born after Luther's "protest" in 1518.
Neither Elizabeth I, nor Maria Theresa, nor Catherine II were less cruel than Isabella. And if you look at history, most of the important rulers were at least as cruel as Isabella. Charlemagne, Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Suleiman, Peter the Great, Henry VIII, Louis XIV, etc, etc. They were all cruel, in one way or the other. Effective leadership often required cruel leaders in cruel times, and most of our past was cruel times, with hunger, pandemics, endless wars, etc.

Mary Stuart had a very interesting and intiguing life, but she is not one of the greatest monarchs ever. She wasn't very successful at ruling, she was deposed by her own people.
