- The most desired pet insect in the history of the pet insect hobby is probably the Orchid Mantis, Hymenopus coronatus. Lately these mantises are sometimes called Kung Fu Mantises and partly because David Attenborough mentioned it in the popular video by BBC Earth called Kung Fu Mantis Vs Jumping spider, also here on TH-cam.

Common names aside, their is no argument about their striking similarities to orchids and this has been noted since the 1800's. And yet they are now known to be mimics of flowers in general as detailed in the study at the following link, and are perhaps the only animal on the planet that is known to mimic the concept of a flower itself rather than a particular flower species that it preferentially rests upon in wait of prey. Pollinators hard at work and quickly moving from flower to flower approach these apparent flowers, and before they can react it's much too late.

In this video we explore the life cycle of the pet orchid mantis from the ootheca (egg case) and its hatching, and then on to first instar, second instar and up to mature adult orchid mantises. To reach the next instar they need to be warm and feed enough to grow to the point they are nearly bursting at the seams, and at that point they will molt. Molting is when they shed their skin or exoskeleton, the part of their body that gives it rigidity and structure. And when they come out, they have grown noticeably in size.
Breeding orchid mantises is also discussed and orchid mantis breeding pairs are shown. Sometimes the introduction of a male orchid mantis to a female results in cannibalism. When all goes well, it results in a fertile orchid mantis ootheca. 4 to 6 weeks later this will hatch and a new generation of red and black baby orchid mantises will appear. As they grow, most of them will be white in coloration but not uncommonly some specimens will become pink orchid mantises. A pink orchid mantis is of course highly desired but there is no knowing if a particular orchid mantid will become pink. On the occasion that a specimen is pink or even leaning towards purple, they are notably darkest and most colorful just before a molt or just after.

Their small size makes them easy to provide adequate food and space to molt. I enjoyed this video so much. Thanks again for another winner!

Budwings are such a great species to observe. They have very few mismolts, even in pretty dry conditions!

@@FuckYouWhosNext The males do grow and much much more quickly and nobody tends to sell adult females because that would be like selling the goose that lays the golden eggs. ;)

I had forgotten my experience with a Weedy Sea Dragon until you mentioned it. I was scuba diving in Australia in 2006 & saw a piece of sea weed floating by. I thought it was a bit odd looking & had a closer look. It was a Weedy Sea Dragon which I now know are marine fish related to sea horses 😜

Dumb comment is dumb, but it's interesting to me that he drums on her back to signify that he's there to mate, considering that tarantulas drum to get the attention of or signal to prospective mates as well. Although, tarantulas do this because they communicate through vibrations along the web and what not, I think. I don't know. Either way, I'm interested, lol.

Also, you don't mind me asking do you know where I could find these guys? I've had their enclosure for awhile but finding anyone selling them or information on them is like trying to find something that doesn't exist. It's a conspiracy to hide them from me lol.
For the reasons explained in the video here and the one the @aquarimaxpets channel with Rus, they are difficult to source because they are difficult to breed. You have done all the footwork to find them. You must remain vigilant and continue to check all the places that might sometimes carry them. There is always more demand than supply with this species. I'm currently looking for males.

I wonder if mantis feeders (or any feeder insects) could be sprinkled/dust with Turkey-tail-mushroom supplement powder (found in capsule form for humans use). It is apparently a natural antibiotic etc... It has stopped my yearly bouts with UTI infections in which I always had to see the doctor to get an intibiotic.

I always thought they look very much like the orchid you find in southeast Asia I believe one is called the moon orchid, it has the same striations within one of the petals, same as the orchid mantis on it “body”

Hi there, just asking on what is the most suitable age to handle the mantids, I heard the nymphs like to jump around and I don't want to risk losing it, what stage do you recommend for handling comfortably without risk of losing them
Edit : for context, I've never had a pet mantis before except an odontomantis vibing around my garden
It can be done at any age. They are very skittish for up to 30 seconds and so do it near the floor in case they jump/fall. Young ones can actually fall very long distances with no injury since they are so light bodied and just sort of glide, however large females and particularly adult ones are heavy and can be injured from falls of more than a foot or so. Males of all ages are very tolerant of falls and adult males are winged and fly rather well, if dropped. Only adult/winged males are likely to be able to get away from you since none of the other stages/sexes can move very quickly compared to a human with arms 3 ft long. ;)
Hi! I’m planning on getting a orchid mantis in the upcoming month, a lot of people have said I would not need a heat mat but I’m not sure. Would you recommend one? Thank you.
It is ideal to keep them at around 80 degrees, even a little warmer if you are diligent in monitoring humidity. So, heat is good if your home is not naturally that warm, however with it comes a higher level of personal responsibility to ensure that you are providing adequate food, water and ambient humidity in the tank.
Are they expensive? I have always loved them and didn't know untill recently you could keep them as pets. Very interested.
What would be the best humidity level for an L2 Orchid mantis ? How often should the enclosure be misted? :)
I have a mantis care sheet on the Bugs In Cyberspace website (care sheets section) that provides more info on this topic than a simple number/level would. The frequency of misting really depends on the nature of the enclosure. More frequent mistings are needed in a highly ventilated tank than a low ventilation one, for example.
How come the male on the flower right at the start looked different to the one that was trying to mate with the female? Where they different types of orchid mantis or is there just differences in appearance between individuals?
I've been keeping this species off and on for decades and so you will have seen clips from various years (of various individual mantises).

Hi Addie! The size of the mantis dictates the size of the feeder with respect to when it is time to switch from fruit flies to larger house flies. As for feeding, this is a complicated topic and I will do a video on it at some point soonish. Please review the care sheet for mantises on my website where you will see that "plumpness" is the goal...and that if the mantis refuses food, it's best to get the food out quickly because the mantis may be preparing to molt.
One question i have a ghost mantis and bud-wing mantis from you and they are so pretty and doing extremely well. I was wondering if you usually post on instagram if any get posted on the website cause i do not wanna miss out on these. Im 12 and keeping mantids is hobby and I’m just getting started but as long as i do my research i can keep this species then ill go on to the devils flower mantis

Hello I wonder if you can help me. I have a question that you may think is silly. But can you inbreed orchid mantids without any bad outcomes or do the mating pair have to be from different parents?
It’s a good and very common question. The answer is that it is better to have unrelated mantises because it marginally improves success in all aspects, but the truth is that probably 97% of the time people are only working with specimens from the same bloodline anyway and with few obvious or provable consequences.

Thanks! Not consistently at all. I've only done it a few times. It's pretty difficult to both source them and then have males and females of the same age at the same time.
@@bugsincyberspace Ah OK, good to know. Does seem a quite finicky species to breed, there are a few roach species that have the same problems in terms of growth between sexes, with males dying pretty quickly too, (Perisphaerus and Arenivaga spp. come to mind), quite an annoying problem for sure!
@@InvertebrateDude Yeah, the trick is always to start with as large a group as possible and then keep the males from that same clutch cooler as you know.

Hi what’s a good recommended diet for orchid mantises? Can a no cricket diet work? How about roaches? I don’t have access to blue bottled flies just hydei and they are really small >.
Roaches are great. Crickets are okay but there are concerns about their cleanliness and bacterial issues, potentially, and especially if they are pet store crickets.
I just got my first orchid mantis a month and a half ago. She had her first (possibly second) molt about 3 weeks ago. How long until I can gender her correctly?
if it is L4 you can see its necklace a bit but at L5 it become more apearent

Do Orchid Mantises reflect UV light like real flowers do?
The study at the link in the caption goes into high detail on the light they reflect but it's also their shape and other cues that allow them in many cases to outcompete nearby flowers for visiting insects. It's like going through the McD drive thru and Ronald McD comes out and eats you while the Fry Guys snicker somewhere nearby. Over 100 billion served!

Their colors often fade a bit but they do show up in collections. Most displays contain butterflies or moths. Perhaps it’s on account of the region you live in to some degree too. 🤷♂️
@@bugsincyberspace Yeah, they're not really common in BC. I've only seen them in the wild in the Okanagon and even then, not very often.
Amazing!! How fragile are mantids to keep?
Well, if you put an isopod in an empty deli cup without a lid on it it’s unlikely to make it through the day as you know, where a mantis would be just fine in there for many days. Given food, it would probably do decently well as most homes have some humidity. The challenge with mantises is setting their habitat up properly so that they can molt successfully. If you can maintain humidity for your isopods, you’ll do well with the mantises because that’s the tricky part for some new mantis keepers. One of the biggest differences is that they are solitary pets, generally. Although there are a few semicommunal species like ghost mantises.

Yep, everywhere they are sold out all the time because demand always exceeds supply for them. You just have to check and recheck everywhere all the time, and say a little prayer to the great mantis goddess.
