    I'm learning to drive and been learning for quite a while now. However, I still haven't got the right technique of braking properly when approaching junctions - especially roundabouts (which make me anxious, anyway). My feet just seem to instinctively go to press the clutch before braking; so I find I stop short of the junction each time. I was picked up on this the other day by my instructor. I'm glad you've shared this video, as it's been very useful - just like all the others on this channel!

      Remember it’s safer to put clutch down earlier then later I think lot inexperienced drivers have this fear of stalling and that’s why most coast a bit. As long as your not coasting at high speeds and if at junctions roundabouts nothing wrong with depressing clutch a tad early without being to technical between 2 and 3 car lengths is fine. If your going slow you may need to press clutch to stop car shaking usually around 10 mph or slower ok to put clutch down before or at same time. Hope that’s useful.

    Stopping too early reminded me of my early lessons. My instructor would say: " keep braking, keep braking, keep braking...why have we stopped?" Took a while to twig that he meant "maintain this braking" instead of "squeeze the brake pedal harder".

    I have found this video very helpful. During my lessons, my 9th was yesterday, my stopping has been too abrupt and jerky and my instructor (professional) hasn't been instructing me when to begin applying the brakes and if I'm a bit late, he does it on his side and that is teaching me that he hasn't got enough faith in when I'm braking and I'm losing trust in his instruction methods. Better to teach me the right time to brake than brake himself and strip me of confidence, thus leaving me unable to drive without him. So frustrating!

    Is it ok to hold down the clutch halfway through turning into a side road? My instructor's car is a diesel and it judders and nearly stalls when it goes below 10 mph in gear 2. He says to press down the clutch when this happens but I'm worried I will get marked down for coasting in the test. He told me that doing this is fine and the examiner can't you mark you down for this because I am already at the low speed.

    • @worlddriving
      @worlddriving  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're trying to drive too slow in 2nd. You either need 1st or don't brake as much for the turn. Normally you'd turn at about 10-15mph unless it's a tight road or other conditions.
      You shouldn't be coasting as you turn.

    • @ridan6155
      @ridan6155 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@worlddriving So change into gear 1 during the turn when I reach below 10 mph? Wouldn't that be the same as I am still holding down the clutch during the turn to change gear?

    • @worlddriving
      @worlddriving  ปีที่แล้ว

      Change down and release the clutch before turning. For a majority of turns from major road to a minor, you'd choose 2nd unless it's a tight road, up a steep hill or other conditions.

    • @ridan6155
      @ridan6155 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@worlddriving But then I will have the issue of the juddering and possible stalling when I am in gear 2. For most normal turns in gear 2 I turn at 10 - 15 mph but half way during the turn the speed reduces below 10 mph when the issue arises. To prevent this I press on the clutch for a second or two. Would this really be considered as coasting at such a low speed? I thought you only get a fault for uneccesary coasting and higher speed (above 10 mph).

    • @worlddriving
      @worlddriving  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ridan6155 That kind of coasting probably wouldn't be noticeable but it's still a bit strange that the car won't turn without it juddering in 2nd. Are you still braking as you turn?
