  • Originally written and performed by Cam, "Mayday" is a song about an unhealthy relationship in which the deteriorating situation is compared to the sensation of drowning. It's deep.
    Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to a cappella group Home Free for the first time, performing "Mayday”.

    I think that Chance is the true secret weapon of Home Free. The others are appreciated for their various talents, but Chance's overtones are as good or better than Avi Kaplan's (and Avi is amazing!). He's the jaw harp in "Man of Constant Sorrow", the synth keyboard on the chorus of "End of the Road", and he's singing fast-fluttering tongue-twisters in "Can't Stop the Feeling!". He gets nowhere near enough love, because everyone else in the group gets more obviously amazing moments in which to shine (and perhaps because he replaced Adam Rupp's brother, Chris).

      That's why I think the group is stronger with Chance than they were with Chris. All Home Fries are forever indebted to Chris so never any shade there, but it helps to have a second bass so that Tim can show off these higher notes.

  • @jamesderbutler
    @jamesderbutler 3 ปีที่แล้ว +216

    "There's something special about Tim and Chance." Well, yeah, just the fact that the bass is actually singing tenor this time because why not and the display of the baritone that he has a pretty low range as well. :D I love the confused look of people who know this group well enough and go like "wait... what?" when they hear Tim up there. It's still crazy to me, that Tim as a Basso Profundo is able to go that high. 5 octaves range is straight up cheating, haha.

      Tim is definitely not a Basso profundo. Only bass, or low bariton like Geoff. If you can sing some notes in the first octave doesn't mean that you're a basso profundo or even bass. It's about projecting those low notes.

    This... Honestly might be the most technically advanced reaction I have ever seen on youtube to any piece of contemporary music. You talk about everything from the arrangement to the vocal tones of each singer in each section, you break down the singer's styles, both typical and what's interesting in this specific piece and you go as far as talking about the frequency range of things Rupp is doing... That... Is on a different level of analysis from ANYTHING I have seen on youtube. This song is fantastic from Home Free, but this might actually be the best reaction/analysis video I've come across in the range of reactions I've watched(even if don't we narrow it down to professional musicians) to any song I've watched. Keep up the amazing work!

    You mentioned in the chat about reaching out to Home Free about the production- their longtime producer, Darren Rust, is also an acappella vocalist himself. He is one of the founders of The Blenders, a seminal acappella group that is vastly under-rated, and also sings contemporary Christian music as a solo artist. He owns and operates Skyland Studio and Skyland Productions, based in Minnesota which is where Rob and both the Rupp brothers hail from. Edit: in reading over this again, I should note that the Blenders are primarily but not exclusively acappella, particularly in their earlier years.

I absolutely love how your reactions are always about helping us to appreciate the performances at a deeper level, pointing out specific techniques or subtle influences that we might miss. So many professionals that do reactions seem more concerned about impressing the audience with their knowledge, and the reaction becomes more about them than the performance they are reacting to. In contrast, you help us to appreciate the talent and the performance even more, and we fall in love with it all over again. It is also just so cool that your excitement and and joy are so incredibly contagious. Don't change a thing. You are also broadening our horizons into other genres that we may not normally seek out on our own. I must admit to being a bit of a vocal snob. So thanks for drawing me out of my cave.

    Chance is an authentic bass singer. His tone is much softer than Tim's but if you listen to their covers of "I Can't Outrun You" or "Some Girls Do" you can get some clearer confirmation of this. Your highlighting Tim's stepping aside for this song is so fitting.
    I wonder if you didn't miss this whole symbolic gesture on Tim's part to allow Chance to take the whole bass part of the song just so he is in the spotlight.
    I often think that they pass the 'lead' around seamlessly and without 'hogging' the spotlight by anyone over the others.

    You keep saying that Home Free is "layering" their voices. They said in an interview that they DON'T layer or loop their voices in production, because they don't use those tools in their live performances either, and they want their live performances to match the videos. What you are hearing is just 5 guys singing. No extras. Maybe their voices are being enhanced in the studio somewhat to produce what you think you are hearing, but there are no extra tracks or layers.

    • @Shadowsoken
      @Shadowsoken 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      There are some songs they do layer, but only when they bring out the looper in a live show. Man Of Constant Sorrow is one they definitely layer, so is Castle on the Hill. They only layer those since its really hard to keep some of the sounds in the two songs for 5 minutes straight.

    • @DyvmSlorm
      @DyvmSlorm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Shadowsoken I've seen a TH-cam of a live performance where they bring out the looper and explain it. However, what is amazing is that each member has done a little of everything. Austin has added some beat boxing style to songs (do you hear what I hear) and Tim covers Adams beat in the Butts Remix while Adam scratches. I've also seen a TH-cam live performance where Tim blows a speaker system. The live recordings show what they can do but are not produced in high quality since they are usually caught on cell phone. I don't know for sure but I've been told that they can't/don't do this one live because of the complexity in using the Looper.
