Thank you for your video. I made the big mistake of laying St Augustine SOD on preexisting St Augustine grass and I found out it will eventually kill the new SOD so now I am taking your word for it and I'll have to remove the SOD and get rid of the old grass and water the soil and lay my SOD back down.
Loving your St. Aug videos. Finally a channel for St. Augustine lawns like my own in TX. The LCN is great, but his lawn is full sun and he doesn't have to deal with the drought conditions we get all summer. He gets tons of rain on that lawn so it's nice and thick. I, like you, have a small lawn in the front with trees so I'm figuring out how to make it thicker. Thanks for the vids. Keep up the good work.
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! I am glad that you like the videos and that they, hopefully, help you! You are right though, having the trees makes a big difference, and not in a good way. I have two trees which shades way to much. Make sure that you get your trees trimmed regularly to help so that they do not shade to much. I had mine trimmed really well this spring. I am also actually considering cutting down the smaller one of my two trees since the other tree is so large anyway... BUT yes, the shading and also the tree roots taking the nutrients really makes it difficult.
@@thesecretgarden6948 Yes I agree. All our subdivisions pretty much put two Oak trees (at least that's what I think my trees are) in the front yard. I bought a pole saw so I've been trimming every weekend to get the canopy down. I was hoping to get that thickness that LCN has, but like I said he has no trees, his grass gets plenty of rain, and it's full sun. We have the challenge of tree cover, while nice, is not ideal from growing plush St. Aug carpets. Not to mention rain in our summers is almost non existent. Still we try.
Another option if you aren’t up to digging up the old sod by hand is to rent a sod-cutter. The things work great and leave a smooth bare surface of dirt. Places like Home Depot rent them by the day. I guess it depends on how big your lawn is as to what works best. I’m facing the task of redoing my front yard which used to be beautiful St. Augustine but was invaded by some weird grass which has pretty much taken over. Not sure what my plan is yet.
Great videos! Just a few questions… Had about 93,000 square ft of new sod in the beginning of last month. Had a few of hiccups though… The landscape guy came in to install it, but didn’t completely kill off the weeds and previous Bermuda grass. I watered pretty good at first, but when I saw all that Bermuda, I freaked out. It has grown through the gaps and through the middle of random St Aug squares. 😮 I spread out some atrizine a week ago today and watered it in. The Bermuda is still very present. I’m in a panic and considering I should just take some collateral damage and spray Ornamec 170 to kill it off then deal with the damage on St Aug? I’ve tried to weed out most of it by hand, but IM TIRED! Lol In addition, the stone delivery guy came and drove over the new sod, because landscaper said it would be fine… well, no, the truck broke the sprinkler system and almost got stuck. Tore up part of the new St Aug; so I need to revive that, but the Bermuda???? It’s attacking! Then front lawn has weeds and is recovering from a fungus from last year. Was thinking… Week killer?!? Not the purple bottle of course! Any recommendations? Lawn whisperer, what do I do? Buy Milorganite and water like mad? BTW yeah LCN is very informative, but he is in Florida… this is the Rio Grande Death Valley USA!
I appreciate this video. I have roughly the same size to replace some torpedo grass that has infiltrated my St. Augustine in the backyard. It's going to take over if I don't remove it. I was wondering if I should apply glyphosate beforehand. You answered that question as I really didn't want to apply it if I didn't have to.
How’d your back feel after all that digging? I just spent all weekend doing the same to 1800 sq feet in my backyard. I can barely move now. I am probably a good 20 years older than you though. And thanks for the video, seems I did it right
Wow, 1800 sqft in one weekend by yourself? That is impressive and I can imagine the pain you are in!! Your back has to be very mad at you! It is good that you were able to do so much at one time, I went a lot slower at it, working in between watching the kiddos. Thank you very much for watching, I am glad it was helpful!
I had 4 pallets St. A delivered on the 24th. after spending the previous 3 or 4 days mixing top soil and sand and tilling the areas to be sodded my back is still recovering..
@@stephenlancisi9087 be sure to water heavily twice, even 3 times a day for the next 2 weeks. My sod is coming along nicely. Might go pick up another 30 or so chunks from Home Depot today. A few smaller random areas near the workshop could use a patch job.
@@stephenlancisi9087 Pensacola Fl, gulf coast. Honestly I was surprised to see Home Depot had it that early. Got hit hard by Hurricane Sally last September and previous lawn got tore up by the tree removal services bobcat. Had the tree remained it definitely would have fell on my house by now so I was ok with sacrificing the lawn. Been nearly a month so far and 95% of the sod is coming along nicely. First mow in another week or 2.
Had me up until you left the huge gash of empty grass. I understand why you did it. Your sod, you lawn. Personally I would have cut the remaining sod to fill the gap for a professional looking finish. To each their own.
Thank you for the comment. Most people would probably agree with you, I just wasn’t worried about it since it will fill in quickly and I didn’t want to have to cut and damage the sod if I didn’t have to. But yes, being in the front yard where everyone can see it, I should have done that
I used a rototiller to loosen dead grass, compacted soil and weeds, than rake away dead grass, weeds that was left. Added a thin layer of top soil, fertilizer and flipped rake over to smooth out soil before watering soil before laying sod. The rototiller saves time and effort.

A very thorough job. There has to be a more automated way.

why did you replace Bermuda with saint augustine? what was your reason for that decision?
I just think it’s way prettier, I love the large broad leaves.. just really pretty. It also grows really thick and is softer for the kids to play on
If you have surrounding neighbors that have st. Augustine. It eats the Bermuda really hard to maintain in hill country areas in Texas.
Why use weed killer or a shovel? A rototiller won't kill weeds?

Teach me the way homie. I accidently put it on my roof..... didn't grow for shit.
I guess you forgot to water it... lol
